Am I A Munafiq?

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Before I begin I just want to, we have Salatul Janazah inshallah after Salatul Jumu'ah. This is the brother of brother Tariq, the mother of brother Tariq inshallah. We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to grant the family Sabr Jameel. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala have mercy on the deceased. This is a sister, so may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala have mercy upon her sister Siham Hassan is her name. We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to grant her Jannah. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make her grave a garden of paradise and may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make all the stages of the akhira easy for her. Ameen, Rabbil Alameen.

Inshallah tomorrow we will have another Salatul Janazah. We just found out and we just received the body of the brother of brother Ziyad Yamut. Brother Ziyad Yamut is a member of our community for a very long time. In fact, he was here even before I joined this community, which was almost like 13-14 years ago subhanAllah. So he found out right before Jumu'ah that his brother passed away. إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ. We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to grant him mercy. And may Allah grant the family Sabr Jameel. Ameen, Rabbil Alameen.

A Call for Support

Brothers and sisters, I don't want to take too much of your time. The Khatib is already here, brother Abdur Rahman Idrees. But I'm standing before you today, not for myself, but for the masjid. As you all know that Alhamdulillah, you come to Epic every single day. You enjoy the atmosphere, the vibe, the services that we provide. But as you all know, that it comes at a price and we cannot do all this. We cannot offer all these services without your generosity and without your donations.

Two things I want to say, first of all, is that there is this general perception that mashaAllah Epic is sitting on a pool of cash somewhere. It's hidden somewhere, someplace. And why are they asking us? And that's not the truth. Because honestly, if we had the money, why would we come to you? And number two is that everyone, whenever we attend these kind of gatherings or these fundraisers, the first thing that comes to our mind also is if I don't give, inshaAllah someone else will give.

Well, you all have to go into your own graves. We all have to face Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala alone. We all have to answer to Allah of how we spend our money. And so the best way to show our gratitude to Allah azza wa jal is to give for others and to give for his house what he has given us. He has given us wealth. He has given us money to give some of that, not even the whole, just to give some of that for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Not for my house, not for myself, but his house.

So with that in mind, inshaAllah, I'm going to ask. We started a campaign some years ago and we just want to continue that campaign. So with that in mind, inshaAllah, I'm looking for any kareem or kareema who is willing to give two hundred and fifty dollars on a monthly basis. I'm just looking for a few hands, inshaAllah. Is there any kareem or kareema here to give two hundred and fifty dollars on a monthly basis?

Again, the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam, if there was any month in which he was the most generous, it was the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is a month of generosity and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala promises. Not me, not anyone else, not the board. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala promises that whoever gives, Allah will multiply their money and how much they have.

So that is why is there any kareem or kareema here who's willing to give? We have the first one, takbeer. I know you're all fasting, but when I say takbeer, I need an epic takbeer. Takbeer. Alhamdulillah. So we have one brother here, inshaAllah. Allah will give this brother the reward for everyone who donate today, inshaAllah.

Is there any other kareem or kareema here? And our sisters, our brothers, you have to go to your own graves. Sisters, you will have to go into your own graves, not your husband's grave. OK, so and I know mashaAllah our sisters are mashaAllah loaded. OK, all driving fancy cars and everything. I know they have money. So if there's any sisters here who have, inshaAllah, you can send me a text. Is there any kareem or kareema here? Two hundred and fifty dollars a month. It is not a lot, two hundred and fifty dollars a month.

We have one brother so far. Can I get a second brother or even just a sister? Anyone here, inshaAllah. We have one more. We have one more in the back over there, takbeer. Brother, just keep your hand raised, inshaAllah. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala reward these brothers who are donating. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala reward them. May Allah put barakah in their life. May Allah put barakah in the akhirah for them. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive them in this dunya and the akhirah. And may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala be pleased with them in this dunya and the akhirah. Say, ameen.

Okay, next, inshaAllah, I'm going to ask, how many of you can just raise your hand, give a hundred dollars a month to the masjid? InshaAllah, we'll go to the next number. A hundred dollars. This is something that's very doable. We have one here. We have one so far. I need at least several hands. We have two so far. So we have two. Can I get a third one? Can I get a third kareem, takbeer? MashaAllah. We have number four here, mashaAllah. Here, this brother here. Can I get number five? Five. This is a hundred dollars a month. You will spend more money going to the coffee shop if you went twice. You will spend more than a hundred dollars accumulatively. Here, this is for the house of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And keep in mind, when you show that, Ya Allah, You gave me. And from that...

...in their life, ameen, rabbil alameen. Say, ameen, brothers. Okay, can I get another one? Can I get the sixth person? Sixth person to give a hundred dollars a month. It's not a lot. We were taking already four minutes into the khateeb's time. Khateeb is already... He's making dua like, Ya Allah, come on.

Okay, we have number six. Okay, just give me four more people, inshaAllah. Four more people to give a hundred dollars on a monthly basis, inshaAllah. And then we'll wrap this up. Four more people, that's it. Four more people. Look, again, I understand. We all have bills. We all have families to take care of. But the promise of Allah is the promise of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Is there any kareem or kareema here? I need four more people. Khair. One, going once, twice.

Okay, let's quickly, I'm gonna ask you, how many of you can give for the masjid? Fifty dollars a month, that's it. Only fifty dollars, we have one. Here, keep your hand up. MashaAllah, this young brother, may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala baraka in his life, ameen, rabbil alameen. Can I get a few other hands? Fifty dollars a month. I'm telling you, you will spend more. You will spend more if you went to the coffee shop just once. People go to the coffee shop once, they spend, you know, fifty, sixty dollars.

We have a second one there. I'm just looking for a few more hands, inshaAllah, then I'll finish. Few more hands. Fifty dollars a month. Our young brothers and young sisters, you have a long life ahead of you. By showing to Allah that your money, that your heart is not connected to the money, but you're willing to give for Allah, Allah inshaAllah will pave the way for you in your life.

Is there any other kareem or kareema here? Fifty dollars a month, this is not a lot. Can I just get three more hands? We have one more in the back there, takbeer. Can I get another one? Just two more people, inshaAllah, then we'll start the Jumu'ah khutbah. Two more people, that's it. Just two more people, fifty dollars a month. Fifty dollars a month. Going once, anyone else?

And the one in the back? The brothers in the back, you're not exempt, you have to go into your own graves. You're acting as if the people in the front, this is their responsibility. No, this is your akhira is on the line here too. So is there anyone else?

Okay, mashaAllah, our own khateeb. So he is giving, he has signed up. We just need one more brother, inshaAllah. One more brother and then we'll finish. Anyone else? One last person. One last person. Khair, inshaAllah. Okay, we have one more brother here, mashaAllah, this young brother. So, okay, we have one more here, please keep your hands up. Please give this brother a card. Here, okay.

The Importance of Civic Engagement

Last thing I will mention is, as you all know, with the current political situation and tension as it is growing, we all know what these politicians are saying about us as a Muslim community. And the Islamophobia and the anti-Islamic rhetoric is only increasing every single day. Now, many of us here, we sit back and we complain about these kind of things. And as Muslims, I will say this in a very humorous way, but we have a PhD in complaining. We know how to complain very, very well. But when the time comes to take action, that is where you and I, we usually take a step back. We have nothing to complain when the time comes to take action and we don't take action.

So with that in mind, we all know that the elections are taking place. Today is the last day for early voting. Today is the last day for early voting. If you want to make a change, you want to make a difference, you want these people to stay in office, then don't go and vote. But if you don't want these people to have the mic and say what they say about us as a Muslim community, and the lies that they are spreading about us, then it is our job to go and make a difference at the polling places, at the polling stations.

So you can sit here and say, oh, is halal or haram? Wallahi, if you're still having this discussion, I'm honestly, I'm sorry to say this, you're part of the problem, okay? It is not every single person, every single one of us here, we need to be going there and voting and exercise our right to vote and our voice. That is the only way these kind of people will not be able to say what they say about us.

So that is why, please make sure you go and vote. Today is the last day for early voting. If you don't go today, March 3rd is the last day to vote. And then please take your family, take your wife, take your husband, take your older children who are eligible to vote. But please go and vote and do your research of who you need to vote for. Jazakumullah khair. I'll give it to the khateeb, inshallah.

The Main Khutbah Begins

Ya Umar, the path that you walk on is the path that shaitan avoids, he goes the other way. The same man was the man who an Nabi ﷺ said:

"If there was to be a prophet after me, it would have been Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه."

This great and noble man. What can we say about him? What would he say if he saw the Ummah right now?

The Legacy of Umar ibn al-Khattab

I'll tell you what he said back then:

Allah honored every single one of us with Islam. And the moment that we turn to anything else except Islam and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, Allah will humiliate us.

صدقت يا ابن خطاب رضي الله عنك - Ya Umar, you spoke the truth over a thousand four hundred years ago. May Allah be pleased with you and reunite us with you.

The Night Patrol of Umar

I tell you a story of our great Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه. One night, when he was the Khalifa of the believers. He did not just take that title of something light as just a fame - just to have looks, just to be popular, just to be famous. No, he took it and he held on to it. He took it and he understood when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 853)

That every single one of you is a shepherd, and you will be questioned on the day of judgment about your flock.

Umar رضي الله عنه, he was the Khalifa. He would scan at night the city, making sure everyone is taken care of رضي الله تعالى عنه. And he was with his servant Aslam. And we know the story:

When they go to the outskirts of Al-Madinah, they see a campfire, they see a fire. So he says, let us go investigate. When they come close, he said, السلام عليكم - O people of the light. And a lady was there with her children crying.

She said, وعليكم السلام. He asked, can we come? She said, if you have خير then come, if not stay away.

So he comes and he hears the kids crying. He sees her with a pot of fire. He says, what's wrong, why are they crying? She says, they are crying because they are hungry. They are crying because they are hungry. And there is nothing in this pot but rocks, but I'm only boiling them. I'm boiling them so they think that food is being cooked so they will eventually fall asleep.

And what did she say? And between me and Umar is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala - meaning, I will show Umar on the day of judgment.

And Umar ibn al-Khattab said, may Allah have mercy on you, how is Umar supposed to know about you? And she said, does he take responsibility over the ummah and just forget about us?

The Response of a True Leader

This is the leader, رضي الله عنه. He immediately got up and ran to bayt al-maal. He went with his servant, he said احمله على ظهري - place the flour on my back. And Aslam said, يا أمير المؤمنين, let me hold it for you. He said, أتحمل أوزاري يوم القيامة؟ - will you hold my sins, will you hold my deeds in front of Allah on the day of judgment? Throw it on my back رضي الله عنه.

And he took it and he went back to them. And he cooked the flour, he cooked the food for them. So much so, Aslam is narrating that أمير المؤمنين went under to blow the fire to make the fire go stronger, that the smoke was coming through his beard, رضي الله عنه, until the food was done. And he fed the kids and they were happy. And he stepped back and watched until they fell asleep.

This was Umar ibn al-Khattab, رضي الله عنه. This was a leader, this was أمير المؤمنين. This is why he was guaranteed Jannah, one of the many reasons.

The Fear of the Righteous

This is the same Umar, رضي الله عنه, that he was known to have marks, two marks down his face from how much he would cry and sob. This is the same Umar, رضي الله عنه. He said, if a caller were to call out from the heavens saying everyone is in Jannah except for one, he, رضي الله عنه, he said, I would have feared that that one person would have been me. رضي الله عنك يا عمر ابن الخطاب.

And Hudhaifah ibn al-Yaman صاحب السر رضي الله تعالى عنه, when النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم entrusted him with the list of who the munafiqeen were, who the hypocrites were, Umar ibn al-Khattab ran and rushed to him. And he said, ya Hudhaifah, I don't care who's on the list - just tell me, am I one of them? Am I one of them?

The same Ameer al-Mu'mineen who went above and beyond. The same Ameer al-Mu'mineen who brought Izzah to Islam. The same Ameer al-Mu'mineen who was guaranteed Jannah. And he asked, am I one of the hypocrites?

May Allah purify our hearts from nifaq, يا رب العالمين.

The Fear of the Companions

Bukhari رضي الله عنه, he narrates that Ibn Abi Mulaika, a tabi'i - may Allah be pleased with him and have mercy on him - he said, I met 30 sahaba, 30 sahaba. And he said, not a single one of them did I meet except that they were afraid that they were a hypocrite. That they were afraid that they were a hypocrite.

These are the sahaba رضي الله عنهم. These are the companions of our Rasul ﷺ. These are the people that our Rasul ﷺ said is the best of generations, my generation. The ones who fought with our Rasul ﷺ. The ones who starved with our Rasul ﷺ. The ones who had they not sacrificed for you and me, none of us would exist today رضي الله عنهم. And they were afraid that they were from the munafiqeen.

When you and I, may Allah purify you and myself, we give a nice khutbah, we have elegant sweets, we wear a nice abaya, we have a nice kufi, we grow our beard. We do these things and we think we're something. We do these ibadat and we think we're something. When they were the best of people, and they thought they were nothing.

The Two Types of Hypocrisy

النفاق أخواني أخواتي في الله - May Allah protect you and I from it. There are two types of النفاق. And subhanAllah time is of the essence.

Major Hypocrisy

الأول النفاق الاعتقادي - and this is the كبرى, the major form of نفاق. And this is the نفاق where the people who act like آمنا وهم لا يؤمنون - they act like they're believers. They come to pray sometimes. They might be in the ummah. But truly they are kuffar, they are disbelievers.

And these are the people that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says:

They are in the lowest bottoms of pits of hellfire. Because they're not just the عدو, the enemy. The disbeliever is open in front of you - they won't hide it from you. But the منافق, this one, they act like they're your brother. They act like they're a Muslim. But deep down they hate you. They hate Allah, they hate Rasul ﷺ.

And subhanAllah sometimes, as you know our masjid is afflicted with these things. Sometimes they come into this masjid. Sometimes they do. And know wallahi Allah will purify us from you inshaAllah soon. May Allah purify us from المنافق. آمين يا رب العالمين.

Minor Hypocrisy

And the second one is نفاق العملي. And this أخواني أخواتي في الله, many of us might fall into. This is the minor hypocrisy, the minor نفاق. And this is the one that's seen in the actions.

And Nabi ﷺ he gave us examples of them. In a hadith he described them as four, and he said anyone who has all four of these characteristics is a منافق. And if they have only one or some of them, they have traits, elements of hypocrisy, elements of being a منافق, until it leaves them, until they get rid of it.

The Four Signs of Practical Hypocrisy

الأول, when he speaks, he lies. And it's not just one time here or there for a necessity. It's often lying for no reason. Lying for no reason at all. They can't help it, they just lie. May Allah protect us from this trait. آمين يا رب العالمين.

وثاني, he makes a promise and he breaks it. I promise I'm gonna do this. I promise I'll get back to you. How often do we fall into this? How often do we fall into this? The Muslim who makes a promise, his promise should be equal to that of a swear, of an oath by Allah. The believers when they promise they fulfill. May Allah make us from amongst them.

And the third, when he's trusted he betrays. When someone trusts you with a secret, with an amanah - hold on to this for me, take safekeeping for this for me, I'm gonna tell you something that I never told anyone, please keep this between me and you. And how often do we fall into the mistake of "between me and you, don't tell anyone this, but this person told me..." Another sign of hypocrisy. May Allah protect you and I from this, يا رب العالمين.

And the fourth, if he argues, he explodes, he becomes erratic, he abuses. That if you get to an argument with this person, that's it. No one is safe from this person. He will call you names. He will slander you. He will backbite you. He will say this person did this and that, even though it's not true. SubhanAllah.

Why These Signs?

Rasul صلى الله عليه وسلم, why did he give us these signs? So that we can understand and reflect. So that we can understand and reflect. And we seek refuge from these signs. And if you know that you might have one or some of these signs, then you know that now is the time to change. In this blessed month is the time to change. May Allah purify our hearts from the hypocrisy, يا رب العالمين.

Self-Reflection and Humility

And how do we know? How do we check? Abdullah ibn Mas'ud he said: No one feels safe from hypocrisy except that they are a munafiq. The moment that shaitan tricks you thinking that you know you're something now - Abdurrahman you're something mashallah, you're something special - that's when you've lost. That's when you have lost completely. And your a'mal will be destroyed. May Allah protect us, يا رب العالمين.

The sahaba, look how much they did for our deen. Yet they thought they were nothing and they feared they were hypocrites. But what about you and I مساكين? What have we done? Truly what have we done? حفظكم الله. I assume you're all better than me. May Allah forgive us for our shortcomings, يا رب العالمين.

The Prayer Test

And one of the signs - and Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم, he told us to know that some of the hardest prayers for the hypocrite, for the munafiq... And please my brothers, my sisters, my brothers especially, when Ramadan finishes, I beg you - Fajr and Isha are the heaviest salahs on the hypocrites.

If you're a baligh, if you are at the age of puberty or above, there is no excuse. We have to be in the masjid, Fajr and Isha minimum, if we can. Rasul told us these are the signs of the hypocrites - this is the hardest salah for them. Ask ourselves: Do I come to Fajr in jama'a? Do I go to Isha in jama'a? May Allah keep us steadfast until we meet him, يا رب العالمين.

The First Three to Enter Hellfire

And lastly, as time is of the essence, Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه, he narrates a hadith. And Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم, he said the first three people to enter the hellfire - the first before the kuffar, before the disbelievers and the pagans and the enemies of Islam...

The False Martyr

Is the shaheed, the martyr who dies in the path of Allah. Allah will bring him forth and he said, I have given you so much, what did you do? He said, ya Allah, I fought to defend your religion and I gave my life for your sake. And Allah will say كذبت - you lied. You fought so they could call you courageous, and they did. And he will say, take him and drag him to the hellfire.

The False Scholar

The second is the qari, the alim, the hafidh, the mufti, the sheikh, the ustad, the khateeb. Allah will bring him forth and he said, I gave you this and this - I gave you ilm, I gave you a beautiful voice, I gave you the Quran. What did you do with it? Ya Allah, I gave khutbas on Fridays, I gave reminders and talks, I brought the youth together ya Rabb. Ya Rabb, I brought the ummah together, I spread Islam, I recited, I led for your sake. And Allah will say كذبت - you lied. You did it so they could call you an ustad, an alim, a sheikh, a qari. And they did. Take him and throw him into the hellfire.

The False Donor

And the last, the generous donor. Allah will say, I gave you wealth, what did you do?

Introduction

Ya Allah, I built epic masjids. I built multiple masjids. I donated left, right, center. All for your sake. Allah will say كذبت, you lied. You did it so they could call you generous. And they did. Take him and throw him into the hellfire. May Allah protect you and I, ya Rabb al-alameen.

The Story of Umar ibn al-Khattab

I end with this story. Umar رضي الله عنه. One day he comes to the home of الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم. And he looks around in this empty house. And he sees the Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم get up from his mat.

And Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم was the most simple of men عليه الصلاة والسلام. He saw that his bed was a mat made out of fiber from the palm trees. And he saw the marks on the side of his body. And he said يا رسول الله, the Roman and Persian kings, they have gold and silk and diamonds and everything. They have palaces. Why don't we ask Allah to make us rich? Ya Rasul, you're the best of mankind. Why do they get this and not you?

And الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم he said, يا عمر الخطاب, do you have a doubt in the matter? Allah is rushing their goodness in this life. Is it not enough that our goodness is in the next life?

Fear None but Allah

With everything that's going on in today's day and age, as Imam said earlier, fear no one but Allah. Let them have the dunya. Let them have the top 1% of the world. Let them have all the money, all the corporations, all the governments, all the armies, all the military. Let them have the media. Let them have every single thing. We have Allah سبحانه وتعالى. And no one can stop us.

And even if they get rid of me, and I will look right at the camera, wallahi, wa tallahi, wa billahi, we fear none of you. We only fear Allah سبحانه وتعالى. And we are Muslim Americans. We will never shake. We will never move. This is our country. This is our land. And no one will stop us. Fear no one except Allah. Fear no one except Allah.

Umar al-Khattab, as he said, عَزَّنَا اللَّهُ بِالْإِسْلَامِ - Allah honored us with Islam. In the moment that any of us look at anything else other than Islam, Allah will humiliate us.

Be Proud of Your Islam

So my brothers, my sisters, may Allah honor every single one of you. Don't be shy of your Islam, your Iman. Be proud of who Allah made you. Be proud to be the follower of Muhammad ﷺ. Be proud to be a believer in Allah and only one Allah سبحانه وتعالى. Be proud to be from the Muslims.

May Allah protect you and I, ya Rabb al-alameen. May Allah purify our hearts from nifaq, ya Rabb al-alameen. May Allah keep us steadfast till the last day, ya Rabb al-alameen. May Allah grant us ikhlas in everything we say and what we do.

Final Du'a
