Those Whom the Qur’an Calls: “My Companion” | Jumu'ah Khutbah | Dr. AbdulRazzak Junaid

All praise is due to Allah سبحانه وتعالى our creator, the originator and designer of the heavens and the earth and upon the best of creation محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم we send our salutations upon him, his family, his companions and all those that follow them in goodness till the end of times اللهم جعل منهم.

My dear respected brothers and sisters there will come a day where every soul will once again be brought to life and all humans will come out of their graves ويوم ينفخ في الصور on that day when their trumpet is blown ففزع من في السماوات ومن في الأرض and people will be struck with terror, with fear فزع like an animal who sees its predator looking straight at it فزع like you just woke up someone abruptly wakes you up from your sleep ففزع من في السماوات ومن في الأرض all those that are in the heavens and in the earth they will wake up in this state of terror and Allah says of that day يا أيها الناس اتقوا ربكم fear your Lord, have taqwa إن زلزلة الساعة شيء عظيم the earthquake on that day of the hour is very tremendous, something so tremendous.

Allah describes that day يوم ترونها that day you will see كل مرضعة عما أرضعت وتضع كل ذات حمل حملها وترى الناس سكارى وما هم بسكارى.

You will see the mother who is nursing her child مرضعة in Arabic for adjectives that are specific to females you don't need to add a تا مربوطة when you say a woman is pregnant you don't need to say حملة حمل is enough a woman who is nursing مرضع so the تا مربوطة here is added to show you that at the moment she is literally nursing her child because of the fear of that day the terror that strikes even the heart of a mother who loves her child more than you can ever imagine she leaves that child because of the fear on that day the mother who has built a bond with her child after many months of pregnancy will leave her burden and you will look at people and they will appear to be intoxicated but they're not intoxicated but the punishment of Allah is very severe.

This is that day the day of يوم القيامة but not all people will be like this not all people will be in a state of terror and fear. The Prophet ﷺ in a hadith reported in Sunan al-Darimi and Musnad Imam Ahmad where the Prophet ﷺ tells us of a person إن القرآن يلقى صاحبه يوم ينشق عنه قبره كالرجل الشاحب.

There will be one person that will be very unique in the completion of the ayah إلا من شاء الله people will be in a state of fear, terror except who Allah عز وجل allows وهم من فزع يومئذ آمنون they're gonna be in a peaceful state. That person, the Qur'an will come and meet his companion and he'll come in a humble like state and the Qur'an will go to his companion and will say هل تعرفني do you recognize me? and the person will say اللهم جعلنا من أهل القرآن قلوا آمين the person will say ما أعرفك I don't recognize you he said أنا صاحبك القرآن I'm your companion in the Qur'an الذي أظمأتك في الهواجر وأسحرت ليلك the one that kept you thirsty in the daytime meaning that this person he put the Qur'an to practice he was fasting in the day and he would be up at night worshiping Allah.

The Qur'an now is giving him peace is giving him company when everyone is in a state of terror and fear this person is unique إلا من شاء الله from those people the Qur'an will come and give him that company give him that peace and then the Prophet ﷺ he says of that person that all of the people of the dunya they left behind their riches it doesn't come to them they left behind all of their tijara as for this person this companion of Qur'an all of his riches are to come he is the richest person and then the Prophet ﷺ he says فيوضع الملك فيعطى الملك على يمينه والخلد على شماله ويوضع على رأسه تاج الوقار that he will be given the kingdom on his right وإذا رأيت ثم رأيت نعيماً وملكاً كبيراً imagine the beautiful mountains and the trees of Jannah he is gonna be given this and eternity in paradise on his left and he will be given a crown of honor.

And the Prophet ﷺ continues for this companion of Qur'an and then he says and his parents will be given such a beautiful garment that no one in the dunya has ever seen they will be given such a beautiful garment that the people of dunya cannot imagine and they will ask بما كسينا هذا why us? we were normal people why did we get this? and it will be told to them بأخذ ولدكما القرآن because your child took Qur'an now you're being honored may Allah honor us Ya Rabb al-Alameen may Allah make us from the companions of the Qur'an.

My dear brothers when you hear this hadith my sisters when you hear this hadith does this not deserve us to give our days to the Qur'an our nights to the Qur'an our entire lifetime in service of the book of Allah when we hear this profound hadith but then it begs a question how can I be a sahib of Qur'an? how can I fall in this hadith? how can I be a companion of Qur'an?

The Nature of Companionship

How can you be a close companion of Qur'an without loving it? when you have a close companion you share memories with them you share moments with them they know the inner details about your life they know the names of your children they know your habits they know what you like they know what you dislike that's a companion this is why Allah He calls the wife, the spouse the wife in the Qur'an the companion يوم يفر المرء من أخيه وأمه وأبيه وصاحبته وبنيه why? because you wake up and you sleep to your wife you share moments with her memories with her emotions with her you live life with her you know what she likes what she dislikes there's a companionship there there is love there there is sohbah there there is companionship there so when we talk about sohbah of Qur'an it means to live with it every single day of your life.

Seven Pillars of Companionship with the Qur'an

And so in today's khutbah I'm gonna share with you all seven pillars of sohbah and companionship that is required for us to inshallah fall under those that are the sahib of Qur'an may Allah make us sahib of Qur'an.

First Pillar: Qira'ah - Recitation

The first is qira'ah you have to recite the book of Allah not a day should go by except you read the Qur'an اقرأ القرآن فإنه يأتي يوم القيامة شفيعاً read the Qur'an as the Prophet ﷺ has said why? because it will come on the day of judgment as your intercessor when nothing benefits you the Qur'an will say that's my companion he's different she's different leave him alone leave her alone protected that's why the Qur'an is hirz.

The Prophet ﷺ and the sahabah رضي الله عنهم they had that daily word of Qur'an and so we should also implement into our schedules that daily recitation of the book of Allah إن الذين يتلون كتاب الله present tense verb they're constantly reading and reciting the book of Allah.

But recitation alone is not enough in fact, if a person only recites and doesn't follow the other pillars that's a very dangerous thing recitation alone is not companionship but from companionship is recitation and the Prophet ﷺ he tells us of a person who will recognize all of his blessings on that day and then it will be asked what did you do with your blessings and he will say قرأت فيك القرآن I read Qur'an for you and I taught knowledge and I studied and I did all of this for your sake Ya Allah and it will be told to him كذبت you lie قرأت you read so that it could be said قاري صاب it could be said ليقال قاري فقد قيل it was done you wanted the reward in the dunya you got your reward in the dunya you wanted the people to look at you you got that and then that person will be dragged on their face to hellfire اللهم أعتق رقابنا من النار. This is a person who only reads this is not enough.

Second Pillar: Tadabbur - Reflection

When a person reads the Qur'an they must do the second step the second pillar of sohbah which is تدبر to reflect on the verses of Allah what does Allah عز وجل want from me from this ayah to allow the Qur'an to move them to penetrate their hearts حركوا بالقرآن قلوبكم move your hearts with Al-Qur'an Al-Kareem.

And when you reflect on the verses when you read the translation when you learn Arabic and the Qur'an was sent in the Arabic tongue ونبينا صلى الله عليهم وسلم عربي اللسان وعربي الدار صلوا على رسول الله you reflect on the verses then it should make your heart melt in front of the book of Allah.

Third Pillar: Al-Buka - Tears

Which is the third pillar البكاء companionship with the book of Allah through your tears when you hear the book of Allah you cry to it يخرون للأذقان يبكون ويزيدهم خشوعاً Allah mentions of the believers that when they hear the Qur'an these believers they literally fall to their faces and Allah says للأذقان their chins the closest thing from their head from their face is the chin and literally they just fall and tremble before Allah from their lowest point يبكون they are in tears ويزيدهم خشوعاً.

وإذا تتلى عليهم آيات الرحمن when the ayat of Allah are recited to them خروا سجداً وبكياً they go into sajda and they are in tears whenever we read those ayat we go into sajda those ayat of sajda but do we fall into tears? May Allah forgive us, Ya Rabb that's the third pillar.

Fourth Pillar: At-Tatbeeq - Application

The fourth pillar after the Qur'an you recite it you reflect over it you cry to it is التطبيق and الترجيم that you make those Qur'an that Qur'an that you recite into akhlaq into a'mal into righteous deeds into your actions. The way you walk should be as the Qur'an guided you ولا تمش في الأرض مرحاً the way you should speak is the way the Qur'an guided you إن أنكر الأصوات لصوت الحمير the way you dress the way you drink the way you eat the way you interact with your parents the way you interact with your children everything should be guided by the knowledge of the Qur'an that's the action with the Qur'an.

Fifth Pillar: Al-Hifz - Memorization

Then the fifth pillar is that not only do you recite it and reflect over it and cry to it and you try to do a'mal with it and you try to bring it into your actions but you also try to memorize the book of Allah to your ability everyone should try and strive to memorize the book of Allah no salah is accepted without Fatiha everyone has to memorize Qur'an to their own, within their own capacity.

The Prophet ﷺ صلى الله عليه وسلم صلوا على رسول الله he said إن الذي ليس في جوفه شيء من القرآن كالبيت الخراب the one who does not have any Qur'an in his heart when you are sitting there without anybody else there when you are praying your salah all you have is what is in your memory a house that is ruined that has no lights that has no furniture that has no windows would anyone live there?

The Prophet ﷺ says: "A heart that has no Qur'an is like a house - there's no life in that house, nobody would live there." Just like that, a life without Qur'an is no life at all. You have to try your best to memorize a little bit of the book of Allah.

Which then leads us to the sixth pillar of sohbah and that is that you seek shifa, al-istishfa through the Qur'an. Allah calls the Qur'an:

That this Qur'an is a cure. The Prophet ﷺ and the sahabah رضي الله عنهم they would read the Qur'an as ruqya and as shifa. They would read surah al-fatiha which is also called surah al-shafia - a surah that brings cure.

So when we fall sick, when something hurts us, of course we should go to the hospitals, go to see the specialist, but why don't we start with the book of Allah and read surah al-fatiha, read ayatul kursi, read those ending verses of Baqara, read mu'awwidatayn, read from the entire Qur'an because it's shifa.

The Seventh Pillar: At-Tahakum

The seventh pillar is at-tahakum. When your desires tell you one thing, when the cultures tell you another thing, and then the Qur'an tells you submit - you submit and you do tahakum to the book of Allah. This is how the sahabah رضي الله عنهم lived.

Salim al-Farisi mawla Abi Hudhaifa رضي الله عنهما - when he was in the battle of Yamamah and when the battle was so intense and this was the battle where many of the Qur'an and the memorizers of the Qur'an had passed away, which led Abu Bakr and inspired him to gather it all in one mushaf. Salim was in the battle and the sahabah behind him said: "Do you fear that we're gonna be attacked from your end?"

Salim he says:

"What a terrible bearer of Qur'an I would be if that's the case! I'm gonna stand my ground." That's a hamil al-Qur'an - he acts with the Qur'an, he lives by the Qur'an. Salim - literally his arm is pierced, it's cut off, he takes the banner with his other hand until he is finally in his last moments killed and he dies as a martyr and he's buried next to Abu Hudhaifa رضي الله عنهما.

The Prophet ﷺ when the battle intensified on the day of Hunayn and the sahabah they're going back because it's intense:

The Prophet ﷺ as he's charging forward still and he's calling the companions to come back and he himself is saying:

He has Abbas رضي الله عنه because he was very loud in his voice say:

"Where are the companions of the shajarah who gave bay'at ar-ridwan? Where are the companions of surah al-Baqarah? Where are those people that read it, that lived it, that cried to it, that followed its commands, that left its prohibitions? Where are those people of surah al-Baqarah?" Because the Qur'an should show up in your actions.

The Sohbah We Can All Attain

That is the sohbah of Qur'an that we can all attain. Sohbah of Qur'an does not mean that you have to become hafiz, but sohbah of Qur'an means that you live through the Qur'an - even if it's one surah, even if it's two surahs, even if it's just surah al-Ikhlas - but you have true companionship with the Book of Allah.

I say what you have heard, and I seek forgiveness from Allah for myself and for you and for all the Muslims, so seek His forgiveness, for He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Second Khutbah

My dear brothers and sisters, the Qur'an will come on the Day of Judgment and the person, the companion of Qur'an will be brought forth. May Allah make us the companion of Qur'an, ya Rabb.

The Qur'an will come and speak to Allah - yes, the Qur'an will be made to speak and it will say on behalf of the companion of the Qur'an: "Ya Rabb, adorn him!" And he will be given and adorned with a crown of honor.

And then it doesn't suffice there. The Qur'an will then say: "Ya Rabb, increase him! As he beautified me, recited me and he lived with me, adorn him and beautify him!" And not just with the crown - increase him and he will be given a garment of honor.

And then the Qur'an will say: "Ya Rabb, be pleased with him!" And Allah will be pleased with that sahib of Qur'an, with the companion of the Qur'an. And it will be told to that sahib of Qur'an: "Read and recite and elevate yourself and climb to the steps of Jannah until you reach the last ayah that you recited." May Allah make us from al-Firdaus al-A'la.

This is the reward of sahibul Qur'an. Does it not then mean for us to dedicate our lives to the book of Allah? And you might say, "But it's so late, Shaykh, I feel like I can't make up for what I've lost." Ma ta'akhkhar man bada' - he is not late, the one who starts. Start your relationship with the book of Allah, and there is no better time than to start now as we are only a few weeks away from Ramadan.
