The Pure Heart: A Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

My heart is pure. My heart is clean. I don't have any malice. I don't have any enmity. I don't have any grudges upon any human.

He says, these are the two things which I have hope in. By means of these two things, inshallah, Allah Ta'ala will have mercy upon me, and Allah Ta'ala will forgive me.

The Narration of Anas ibn Malik

I conclude with the narration of Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, who was the Khadim — the servant — of Nabi ﷺ. He served him for ten years, as he says himself. He says, I served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years, and he never even said uff to me — meaning he never even expressed the slightest amount of annoyance towards me.

And then he says that whenever I did anything, Nabi ﷺ never rebuked me — that why did you do this? Or why didn't you do this? Always he treated him with such softness, with such kindness.

So one day Nabi ﷺ addresses this young Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, and he tells him:

"O my dear, O my beloved son — ya bunayya — if you are able, if you are capable, then every morning and every evening, check your heart. Monitor your heart, and make sure you have no grudges towards anyone. Make sure you have no ill feelings in your heart. Every morning and every evening, check."

And then Nabi ﷺ told him something very powerful:

وَذَلِكَ مِنْ سُنَّتِي، وَمَنْ أَحْيَا سُنَّتِي فَقَدْ أَحَبَّنِي، وَمَنْ أَحَبَّنِي كَانَ مَعِي فِي الْجَنَّةِ

(Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Hadith 2678)

Nabi ﷺ told him that if you can do this one action — of checking your heart morning and evening, making sure it is free from any ill feelings, any grudges against any fellow human — if you are able to do this, then note and understand that this is my sunnah. And if you practice upon it, then you have definitely revived one of my noble practices. And if you revive one of my noble practices, then tomorrow we will be together in Jannah.

Welcoming Ramadan with a Clean Heart

My message is: what better way to welcome the month of Ramadan than to clean this heart, than to clear this heart of all ill feelings towards others, to forgive one another. Inshallah, by us forgiving one another, by us letting go, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will forgive us, and He will shower us with His mercy in the month of Ramadan.

May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala grant us the tawfiq. Ameen.

وَمَا عَلَيْنَا إِلَّا الْبَلَاغُ — And upon us is nothing except to convey.
