The Prohibition of Suspicion (Hurmatu Su'il-Dhan)

My dear respected brothers and sisters in Islam,

Today I wanted to quickly remind myself and everyone, and speak about the topic from the Qur'an and the Sunnah and examples of the Salaf, about the hurmatu su'il-dhan — the prohibition of having suspicious thoughts.

And just like other aspects of the deen, this is a very nuanced discussion, where on one side we are prohibited from harboring suspicious thoughts about other individuals, but at the same time, we are also instructed in our deen not to be so naive and ignorant of warning signs, and to be so simple-minded that people take us for a ride — people who have evil intentions, we become their victims and get defrauded. So this is the entire spectrum.

The Three Prohibitions in Surah Al-Hujurat

Let us begin with the discussion about the very well-known and often quoted ayah, where Allah mentions three prohibitions in order, and how one leads to the second, and the second leads to the third.

In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says:

"O you who have believed, avoid much suspicion — indeed some suspicion is sin. And do not spy on one another, and do not backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it."

Even in this ayah, when the prohibition is coming, Allah did not use words that are inclusive of all negative thoughts. He said كَثِيرًاmost of them. The multiple explanations of this — one of them I already alluded to right from the beginning — is that if there is negative circumstantial evidence, the conditions are negative, then it would not be haram to be afraid and to do proper investigation of what's going on. So unfounded, baseless suspicion — that is what is haram. And that is what happens most of the time.

That's why Allah said اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ — He didn't say اجْتَنِبُوا from every dhan.

The Foresight of the Believer

The Prophet said:

(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3127)

"Beware of the firaasah — the piercing wisdom and foresight — of the believer, for he sees with the nur of Allah." He knows what's going on. He is rarely betrayed. He can see where the traitors are, because he has the basira from Allah.

So there are many examples and stories of how our pious predecessors weeded out traitors — they were aware of what was going on too. But at the same time, we don't live in a state of paranoia, where we start assigning ill intentions to everyone, perpetually in a state of: "What do you think his actual agenda is? What's the actual motive? Why is this person acting this way?"

How One Sin Leads to the Next

So there are three prohibitions in this ayah. We're going to be talking primarily about the first one today. But to conclude the ayah — اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ — avoid having much suspicion. إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ — some of these thoughts that you are harboring are sinful.

And now what happens is: if a person has a bad idea germinating in his mind about somebody, and this is bothering him, then in order to prove that his idea is correct, he has to gather evidence. And in order to gather evidence, he will end up spying on the individual. Because he says to himself: "I have this idea that this person is actually insincere. This is his actual agenda. But how am I going to know for sure? Right now it's at the dhan phase — it's just a thought." Now the way that dhan can turn into yaqeen — into conviction, irrefutable truth — is if you have irrefutable evidence. And how do you gather that evidence? You end up spying on a person. This is called tajassus.

And that is the second prohibition: "And do not spy on one another."

Now if you are continually spying on someone, then every human being has mistakes — because every son of Adam and daughter of Hawa is a sinner at some level. And the best of the sinners are those who repent from their sin. So if you're going to be very closely following somebody — publicly, privately, on their track, watching them — then you are going to end up finding some faults. Whether it's the original fault you had a suspicion of, or something else, you will discover something along the way.

So once you find out something about someone that they're doing wrong, what is the third sin we get involved in? Broadcasting it. Informing others. Talking about it. Which is of course ghibah. And that is the third prohibition: وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا"And do not backbite one another."

SubhanAllah. أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ — "Would anyone of you like to eat the dead flesh of his brother? Most likely you would dislike that." So this is the prohibition mentioned by Allah in order. We see this beautiful sequence from Allah.

The Harms of Suspicion

The Prophet said:

"Beware of harboring suspicious thoughts — this is the worst form of speech." It is the worst form of sin when it comes to interactions with one another, because it is the foundation for all the remaining sins flowing out from it.

Our Obligation: Avoiding Scenarios That Invite Suspicion

On the receiving side, we also have an obligation — and that is to avoid scenarios that would make it easier for people to fall into that sin. Like after the salah, if you are praying your sunnah near the exit, what are we doing? We're making it harder for people. This is similar to the ruling about passing in front of a musalli.

Passing in front of a musalli is a sin — if you pass so close between where the person is standing and where he is going to make sajda. If there is some gap there may be some relaxation, particularly when there are a lot of people praying. But if you pass right in front of the individual, so close that where you are passing is between his feet and where he would make sajda — that is definitely prohibited.

The Prophet said:

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 510; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 507)

"If the person passing in front of someone praying salah had knowledge of how grave his sin is, he would rather wait for 40." And the hadith ends there — 40 what? 40 hours, 40 days, 40 weeks, 40 years? This is a beautiful tangent here.

The reason the narrator left it incomplete is a testament to the integrity of the narrator. He didn't want to fill in the blank with something — "let me make my speech more effective and powerful by saying 40 centuries or 40 years." No, he couldn't lie about the hadith of Rasulullah . So he said, "All I can recall is that the Prophet said he would rather have waited for 40 — and I have no shame in telling the whole world that the narrator forgot whether he said 40 years, 40 months. But for us, even if it's 40 minutes, it's sufficient to make the point that it is a sin."

We all have to help one another in avoiding sins. The Prophet said: اجْتَنِبُوا مَوَاضِعَ سُوءِ الظَّنِّ — "Avoid such places where people will end up potentially falling into the sin of having a bad thought about you."

Like if you are going to drink orange juice and you're sitting in a bar drinking it from a glass, someone is going to look at you and most likely think it's spiked with vodka — because that's what's being served there. You may be drinking 100% orange juice, but you're sitting there drinking it in a bar. Why are you sitting there? Avoid such places.

The Prophet's Example: Clarifying to Avoid Suspicion

In fact, the Prophet actively avoided such things himself. When he was in i'tikaaf and his wife came to ask him a question, he was inside the masjid. He walked to the corner of the masjid, spoke to her, and when she was leaving and two sahabah were walking by — this was the dead of the night, and the Prophet was talking to a woman — he stopped them and said:

إِنَّ هَذِهِ صَفِيَّةُ ، إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَجْرِي مِنَ الْإِنسَانِ مَجْرَى الدَّمِ

"Verily, this is my wife Safiya." They said, "Ya Rasulullah, how in the world would we have any bad thoughts about you? Why are you going out of your way to clarify?" Then the Prophet said, "On your end, mashAllah, you feel that way. However — Shaytan, his insinuations, his evil whispers, they are coursing through the body of a human being, they are flowing through us the way the blood flows through the body." SubhanAllah. So he showed us: avoid such conditions that would potentially lead a person to have an evil thought.

The Impact on Marriages and Families

If the husband asks the wife, "Who are you talking to? Where did you go? I came home and you weren't there," and she says, "I had a meeting with someone — oh, who did you meet with? — they said I should not tell you." You are creating suspicion in the heart of the husband. Or the wife asks the husband, "Where were you last night?" and he says, "I cannot disclose that." You are again creating doubt on both sides. This can end up destroying marriages, and we see that happening all the time.

The Qur'an says:

Husbands and wives are supposed to be like libas — a garment — for one another, covering one another, covering each other's faults, not trying to find them and broadcast them.

Spiritual, Psychological, and Practical Harms

Having su'udhan is harming individuals in so many different ways. First, there is the spiritual loss — because of it being a ma'asiyah. Every time we commit a sin, there is a darkness coming into our heart. Sin upon sin upon sin, until the heart is completely rusted. The regression from one sin to the next: starting off with su'udhan, then tajassus (spying), and then ghibah after that.

And besides the spiritual loss, psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals talk about the emotional strain and mental anguish people are in because of this sin. It increases anxiety, depression, and paranoia. It elevates cortisol, which leads to harming sleep, cardiovascular issues — all of these problems stemming from su'udhan.

Then there are the real-world, practical damages. Spouses' marriages are being impacted — constantly checking phones, jealousy, false assumptions, destroying trust and emotional safety. Between siblings, inheritance disputes. Misreading tone, misreading statuses and messages — this is another big problem caused by loss of context.

When you see a person and talk to them face to face, there is a lot of non-verbal communication happening. That non-verbal communication is completely missed in text messages. That's why we also recommend that when people are getting married and they delay the rukhsati and remain in a long-distance relationship for a year — many times it is destructive. Because if the husband and wife are living together, many of the problems that may happen during the day are resolved when they meet each other at night. The husband texts his wife, and she's in the middle of a class or in the middle of work and doesn't respond, and he says, "See, you ignored me" — he doesn't know the context. The husband doesn't know the context of the wife, the wife doesn't know the context of the husband. Lack of context leads to a lot of problems.

The Balance: Tathabbut — Verification Without Paranoia

As I said in the beginning, there is a balance — we should not be naive. We have to have hikmah and basira. If there are problems, we should be able to act — but now the verb we use is not tajassus (spying), it is tathabbut — verification. Allah says:

تَبَيَّنُواtabayyana, tathabbata — means to investigate. If some negative news reaches you, you do not automatically dismiss it and say, "This is contrary to having husnul dhan — I should not have such bad thoughts." Sometimes you have to do your diligence and investigate. This is also the order from Allah in the very same Surah Al-Hujurat.

When you are hiring somebody, when you are getting married to somebody, when you are giving your daughter in marriage to somebody — you can't just say, "I will go with husnul dhan and take your word for everything." No — you do have to do your diligence.

Example from the Seerah: Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah

One beautiful example from the seerah of Rasulullah is the example of Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah. The story is long, but the relevant crux is this: when the Prophet was planning the Fath of Makkah, Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah radiyallahu anhu — a sahabi of Rasulullah — exposed the Prophet's secret. He sent a written message to Makkah informing them that the Prophet was planning to attack. This was a major, major mistake — a major khiyanah.

So the Prophet , when he investigated the threat, sent Ali radiyallahu anhu and other sahabah to intercept the woman carrying the message. They caught her and she denied everything. They said, "Give us the letter, otherwise we will have no choice but to search you." So she untied her braid from the top of her hair — and inside it was a note, which she took out and gave to them, containing the Prophet's plan.

But when the Prophet brought the sahabi before him and asked him what happened, he said, "Ya Rasulullah, I am so embarrassed and I apologize — I have no words to express my regret. But I want to clarify to you that I am not a munafiq."

He referenced the reality about the hypocrites:

"Among the residents of Medina there are those who persist in hypocrisy — you do not know them, but We know them." Hatib said, "Ya Rasulullah, I am not among them. I believe in you, you are my messenger, and I am fully convinced you will be victorious — Allah will give you the fath of Makkah. But I had a personal need: my family is there, and there is no one to support them. I thought if I gave them the heads-up warning, they would compensate me or recognize my gesture by keeping my family safe and secure. There is a lot of collateral damage in war — I wanted my children to be safe."

So what did the Prophet do? He did the investigation, he caught the sahabi who made the mistake — but then he also accepted his motive. He did not declare takfir and say, "You are a murtad and you'll be put to death." He accepted his explanation. This is the balance we see with Rasulullah .

Example from the Sahaba: Umar and the Wall

Umar radiyallahu anhu is known for his nightly journeys, incognito and in disguise. At one time, he had some doubt about a house and climbed the wall, about to look inside. Then he stopped himself. He said, "O Umar — yes, you are Ameer al-Mu'mineen, yes it is your duty. But if something is happening inside the wall, I should not go further." He turned around and came down the ladder. All the way at the top, he thought, "I've already made it this far, let me just peer inside." No — he stopped. A beautiful balance.

The Balanced Path: Action Points

What's the balanced path? By default, you begin with husnul dhan. Any concerns that arise, you verify them. You act on evidence, not on whispers. You conduct limited investigation. You consult elders, consult scholars. And then at the end of the day, you make istikharah, make mashwarah, and trust in Allah.

Some practical action points to conclude:

For spouses: Have open communication. Avoid spying on one another.

For families: Always give the best interpretation first. Give excuses on behalf of one another. "This is why they did not invite us — because of this and that." No — maybe they just forgot.

For businesses and professional relationships: Have clear contracts and clear audits.

For the community: Verify before forwarding messages.

May Allah protect us from the sin of su'udhan. May Allah allow us to understand the beauty of our deen and how practical it is. And may He give us the guidelines for us to have the best dunya and the akhirah.
