Denial Versus Repentance: Lessons From Aad And Yunus

The Nations of Aad and Yunus: Denial vs. Repentance

Allah mentions the stories of so many different nations in the Qur'an. There is a very profound and moving comparison we can see in the Qur'an of Qawm Aad and Qawm Yunus — the nation of Aad with their Nabi, Hud alayhi salam, and the nation of Yunus alayhi salam. The Qawm Aad were living in the southern Arabian peninsula, Bil Ahqaf, as Allah mentions in Surah Al-Ahqaf.

The ayat that we want to quickly compare and study are from Surah Al-Ahqaf and Surah Yunus. Al-Ahqaf meaning the shifting sands of southern Arabia, as the Qawm Aad were an Arab tribe — not from the Arab Al-Araba. There are different Arab nations: from the time of Ismail alayhi salam and his progeny, the one that the Quraysh were from, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, they are known as Arab Al-Araba. And then there are ancient Arab tribes from the extreme past, right from the beginning of time after Adam and Nuh alayhi salam — they are known as Al-Araba Al-Badiya, the extinct ancient Arab tribes, including the Aad and the Thamud.

So they were living in Ahqaf. And then we have Qawm Yunus — they were living in Nineveh, near Mosul, in Iraq. It was a big city of 100,000 inhabitants, as Allah mentioned in Surah As-Saffat.

The Compare and Contrast

The comparison is — their stories are very long, each one — but one particular ayah we want to compare is when these two respective nations saw the signs of the adhab of Allah, how did they react? There's a big difference in the reaction. There are certain elements of the story which are the same, because this is a compare and contrast. So we have to see where their stories align, where they are similar, and where there is a significant departure as well.

The similar parts are that Yunus alayhi salam comes to Qawm Yunus, and Hud alayhi salam comes to Qawm Aad. Both of these Anbiya alayhi salam invite their respective nations towards Tawheed — towards the oneness of Allah. Every single Nabi that came invited towards the oneness of Allah.

This is a universal message, because it is a universal truth, and truth does not change — it is constant. That is why, as we joke sometimes, a liar has to have a very good memory. He has to keep all the different stories intact in his mind, he has to make sure he does not contradict himself. But the one who is speaking the truth — the truth is always one.

The truth in this case is of Tawheed. So the Tawheed is the same, the rejection was the same, and the mockery was the same. Qawm Aad is mocking and rejecting Hud alayhi salam. Likewise is Qawm Yunus.

But then what happens is that after the warning continues, finally, the signs of the adhab become apparent on the horizon. And that is where their reactions are significantly different.

The Story of Qawm Aad — Surah Al-Ahqaf

Going over the passage from Surah Al-Ahqaf, Ayah 21 (Surah 46), Allah says: Remember the brother of Aad.

The Nabi, Hud alayhi salam, is referred to as a brother. Allah says: "To Aad, We sent their brother." He is a Nabi, he is a Rasul — but Allah, instead of referring to him as a Nabi or Rasul, refers to him as a brother. To show the compassion, to show the love that he had — the way a brother has — and also to show the familiarity, that he is not an intruder, he is not an immigrant from outside. He is a son of the soil, as they say. Born a citizen of that Qawm, of that nation, of that tribe.

And even with our Rasul sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Allah said:

"Indeed, Allah has done a great favor upon the believers when He sent amongst them a messenger from amongst themselves."

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also said, as Allah mentions in the Quran:

"I have lived my whole life amongst you." Do you not know? Did you not always call me As-Sadiq al-Amin? Then why are you rejecting me today? What happened? As-Sadiq al-Amin now became

So — remember — this is a command from Allah to remember. It's not a history lesson or nostalgia, but rather an order from Allah that this is not just dead history, but a living warning for us. A command to actively recall.

Akha'a Ad — the brother of Aad.

"When he warned his people in the area of the shifting sands — and many warnings have passed before him and will continue after him — 'Do not worship anyone besides Allah. Verily, I am afraid for you of a dreadful torment.'"

Before him was Nuh alayhi salam, immediately preceding him. And after him was Thamud and Nabi Salih alayhi salam. Meaning, this is a continuous system of Allah — sending prophet after prophet. This is not like the first time anyone ever heard this message.

When he warns them, he is not there to make their life difficult because he hates them or wants them to suffer. Rather he says: "Verily I am afraid for you of a dreadful torment."

So when the Anbiya alayhi salam — and the inheritors of the Anbiya alayhi salam, the du'at, the ulama — are warning people, sometimes our reaction is: why are you giving us bad news? Why are you there to destroy our happiness, our pleasure? Let us enjoy. Just always give positive messages, make us feel good. But the Nabi, if he is warning, and the waris of the Nabi — the inheritor of the Nabi — is warning, it is out of sincere love. نَاصِحٌ أَمِينٌ — it is nasiha. He wants a good outcome for his people, for his home.

But what is their response? Rejection. They say:

"Have you come to turn us away from our gods? Bring it on — show us your azaab that you are promising us, if you are truthful."

Whenever we talk about gods in the Quran, we think: oh yes, those were such ignorant people — they literally used to worship stones and idols. Who in the world does that? But dear brothers, the idols are not something from far-off history and archeological studies, where we dig in the ground and unearth these idols and say, oh, people used to literally worship stones — that was before science. We also have gods today. The gods are different. If they are not physical stones, they are ideological. They are our hawa, our nafs, that we are worshipping. It is materialism that we are worshipping. These are all gods as well, besides Allah.

"Do not become a slave and worshipper of your desires — it will lead you astray from Allah."

So they are challenging — trying to challenge Allah. This is the same thing that the people of Quraysh said to Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam:

"O Allah! If this messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, is speaking the truth, then bring down a rain of rocks upon us from the sky, or bring us a dreadful torment."

So what does the Nabi of Allah respond? He says:

"The knowledge of the exact hour of when this azaab is going to strike — it is with Allah. And I am conveying to you the message given to me by Allah. That is my job. But I see that you are acting very ignorantly."

This jahalah that comes in the Quran — when Allah speaks about jahil — we think in our speech, jahalah is ignorance, being uneducated. But the jahalah Allah is speaking about in the Quran is a different type. It is not referring to being uneducated with regards to worldly sciences or knowledge — this is being ignorant with respect to the reality of our existence: where we came from, where we are going, what is the objective of our life. The person may be a top academic when it comes to worldly knowledge —

"This is the extent of their knowledge." Regarding the hereafter, they have no knowledge.

The Moment of Denial — Surah Al-Ahqaf, Ayah 24

Now, the key ayah of comparison — and this is the ayah that struck me so deeply during tilawah — is Surah Al-Ahqaf, Ayah 24. Look at the reaction of these people. It is mind-blowing.

When they began to see — they literally saw on the horizons dark clouds covering the horizon. A theoretical warning had now become an actual reality. They should have had ayn al-yaqin when they heard the Prophet saying it. Now they are seeing it with the eye of certainty.

Fa lamma ra'awhu 'aridan mustaqbala awdiyatihim — when they saw these dark clouds heading towards their valleys. Not one valley — awdiyah, multiple valleys, areas of habitation and enjoyment. Allah had given them these beautiful valleys. And they saw these clouds coming towards them.

So they are in absolute denial. And in that denial, when they see this adhab approaching them rapidly from the horizon — the black clouds spreading and covering the sky, and in the broad daylight it is becoming dark — they say:

"Hatha 'aridun mumtirun a" — "This is exactly what we have been looking for, praying for, hoping for!"

They were celebrating and excited. Why? Because they were in such denial that they were misinterpreting this impending adhab — in a few moments it would engulf them. They said: "This is the clouds that we have been waiting for, that shall shower our fields with rain. We need that rain for our crops, for our animals." There had been a long drought, and they thought: this is what we needed.

Allah immediately corrects them — very abruptly:

"No! This is what you were demanding and asking for — this is what you are going to get. A wind in which there is a dreadful torment! It will destroy every single thing. And they were destroyed, decimated, obliterated, to such an extent that no sign or trace remains of them except for the remnants of their homes. This is how I give the azaab to those who are sinners."

Meaning this is not an isolated incident — it can be repeated. This is the system of Allah, the Sunnatullah. It will happen again and again over time.

"And We had given them authority, strength, and power over the earth. And We gave them ears to hear the truth, eyes to see the truth, and hearts to understand the truth." Meaning, they had the tools. They were not blindfolded, they were not handcuffed, they had every option. They chose not to use those tools.

"But all of these — their eyes, their ears, their intellect, their hearts that Allah had given them — did not help them, because they chose to deny. They made the active decision: no, we are going to deny; we are bent upon denial." They were in denial until the very last moment they were literally destroyed.

"And that azaab — the same one they were mocking — is the one that came in and destroyed them." SubhanAllah.

The Story of Qawm Yunus — Surah Yunus, Ayah 98

Now, as we said, we conclude with the Qawm of Yunus. Just one ayah — we will not do the whole context. Surah Yunus, Surah 10, Ayah 98.

Yunus alayhi salam comes, invites them, they also reject — that part is similar. But when Yunus alayhi salam leaves, they wake up. And what happens is — the system of Allah — before His azaab strikes, He pulls out His messengers, He evacuates His prophets. Like the nations of today evacuate their embassies, their state department officials leave the country before the bombers come to flatten the city. So they said: the messenger of Allah has been evacuated. That is a sign.

Yunus alayhi salam is gone, and they saw the signs of the azaab. Now — instead of denying, instead of saying "Oh, this is the rain we were waiting for, bring it on, we are so happy and excited and celebrating" — they made tawbah.

This is a rhetorical question — Allah is lamenting and saying: "Why is it that other cities and peoples and nations — why don't they believe, as this Qawm believed? And then their iman will benefit them right away — except for the Qawm of Yunus. When they believed in Allah, We removed from them the azaab of humiliation in the worldly life. And We allowed them to live and enjoy — not forever, not immortal — but for some appointed time."

The Qawm of Yunus — they all left the city. They went out into the plain. The men and the women, the young and the old, and even the animals — they all cried in front of Allah. They did a collective tawbah. They said: O Allah, forgive us. O Allah, forgive us. The Nabi has left. The signs of the azaab are on the horizon. We are destroyed.

And they started making such sincere tawbah that even as the signs of the azaab were apparent — Allah pulled it back. And Allah saved that nation.

The Lesson for Us Today

So this is an example for us. And we can apply it to our condition. Everyone is intelligent — just look around us. If not literally, then figuratively. If not haqiqatan, then majazan. The signs of the azaab — where are they? On the horizon. We need to read the message on the wall. It is right there. Whether it is global wars, geopolitics, financial instability — all of these signs are around us.

The question is up to us. Will we be in denial — like Qawm Aad? Or will we be making tawbah — like Qawm Yunus?

Let us take this message to heart and share it with our loved ones. And may Allah give us tawfeeq to make the correct decision. And may Allah accept our prayers.
