Hidden Treasures Episode 04 — The Du'a the Prophet (ﷺ) Taught Mu'adh (RA)

What if this Ramadan was our last Ramadan in our entire life? What can we do different this year that we have not done in our previous Ramadans? The Prophet of Allah عليه السلام has taught us throughout all books of Ahadith nearly 12,500 du'as which he made in his lifetime, which is an immense amount of du'as that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم made in his life. These du'as are compiled in different books. They're compiled in a very beautiful manner. When to make these du'as, all of the specifics of those du'as are all mentioned.

But inshallah today we will learn a du'a which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم taught to a very young companion. This young companion of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was 18 years of age at that time. And this companion spent 36 years in this world. In other words, 18 years of his life he was a Muslim and 18 years of his life he was a disbeliever. He lived in Madina Munawwara.

The Love of the Prophet (ﷺ) for Mu'adh (RA)

This companion was extremely special to the Prophet of Allah because we all know that as Muslims, if I was to ask you, do you love the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام? Everyone will say, yes, of course we love the Prophet of Allah. No one would ever deny that. But how beautiful is it that when you testify to someone your love and in return you get the testification that they also love you — that is a different feeling when it comes to love.

Love is not something that is one-sided, it is always two-sided. And when another individual comes and tells you, I also love you, it just feels extremely beautiful inside.

The Prophet of Allah عليه السلام, when teaching this one specific du'a which we will go over right now, before he brought this du'a to this very companion, the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام is on a camel, riding in the front and this companion is in the back. And while he is about to mention this du'a, there is a very specific thing that happened right before that.

Who Was Mu'adh ibn Jabal (RA)?

He says, Ya Mu'adh — this specific companion is by the name of Mu'adh. Mu'adh رضي الله تعالى عنه had the opportunity to spend his life of 18 years as a Muslim with the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام in a very beautiful manner. Not only that, he was able to obtain so much knowledge of the Deen of Allah that the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام in one hadith says:

The most knowledgeable of them in matters of halal and haram is Mu'adh ibn Jabal. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3791; also referenced in Musnad Ahmad)

The individual that has been the most knowledgeable in the Deen when it comes to halal and haram is none other than Mu'adh ibn Jabal.

The Moment on the Camel

So on this very occasion, Mu'adh was riding in the back and the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام was right in the front. And between them — just like today we have cars, the distance between one passenger to the driver, sometimes it can be a very big difference — but here, when you're on a camel, the only difference is that small part that is on a camel that differentiates the driver in the front and the passenger in the back.

So the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام is in the front and while riding this camel, he says:

And Mu'adh says:

Oh Prophet of Allah, I'm here for you. Tell me, what are you asking?

And the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام again says:

Oh Mu'adh. And Mu'adh responds:

Tell me, oh Prophet of Allah, I'm here for you, whatever you command, I'm here for you.

In Arabic, you call this tahrid — which basically means when you're about to tell someone something important, you analyze it in a way that you remind them that whatever I'm about to mention to you is going to be extremely important.

"By Allah, I Love You"

So Mu'adh رضي الله عنه says, tell me. So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in that very moment says to Mu'adh:

Oh Mu'adh, by Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 1522; also in Musnad Ahmad)

Imagine that the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام is telling this companion that I love you. He says it once. And then he says to Mu'adh:

Oh Mu'adh, by Allah, I love you. Now tell me, did the Prophet of Allah really need to say Wallahi? No, he's a truthful Prophet. He will not lie. But to emphasize the importance of what is about to be said after this statement is extremely important — and it is a gift of Ramadan that I'm about to give you.

The Du'a: A Gift After Every Fardh Prayer

Mu'adh رضي الله عنه, when he hears these beautiful words of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, the Prophet of Allah says to Mu'adh:

لَا تَدَعَنَّ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ — after every fardh prayer, recite this du'a. After the Salat, after every fardh prayer, recite this du'a.

Now keep in mind, when someone loves you, they oftentimes gift you something. The Prophet of Allah loved Mu'adh, so he gifted this to him. And when you love someone, what do you do? You keep that gift as a precious thing. Someone gifted you a cologne, you keep it, you utilize it in the most important moments of your life, and you try to save it as long as possible.

Mu'adh رضي الله عنه is the narrator of this hadith, and he heard this hadith from the Prophet of Allah عليه السلام directly. In other words, he is teaching us the importance of this du'a.

The Three Requests of This Blessed Du'a

In this very du'a, he mentioned three important things. This du'a is:

This du'a contains three requests:

• اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ — Oh Allah, help me remember you.
• وَشُكْرِكَ — Oh Allah, help me appreciate you.
• وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ — Oh Allah, help me do your worship in the best of manners.

A Call to Action This Ramadan

So my brothers and sisters, this Ramadan, try to implement this du'a in your life. Try to learn this du'a in Arabic if you can, and if you don't know the Arabic, learn the English, and make du'a with these words of the Prophet ﷺ on a daily basis in the month of Ramadan.

We ask Allah to bless you, to bless your families, to bless the Muslim Ummah around the world, especially for those brothers and sisters in Gaza, Sudan, wherever they may be. May Allah bless them in this month of Ramadan.
