Eid al-Fitr Khutbah 2024

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ مَٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ سَبِّحِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلْأَعْلَى ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ وَٱلَّذِى قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَخْرَجَ ٱلْمَرْعَىٰ فَجَعَلَهُۥ غُثَآءً أَحْوَىٰ سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰٓ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ فَذَكِّرْ إِن نَّفَعَتِ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰ وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَشْقَى ٱلَّذِى يَصْلَى ٱلنَّارَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ وَذَكَرَ ٱسْمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌۭ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِى ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ صُحُفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَٰشِيَةِ وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَٰشِعَةٌ عَامِلَةٌۭ نَّاصِبَةٌۭ تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةًۭ تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍۢ لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍۢ لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍۢ وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ نَّاعِمَةٌۭ لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌۭ فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۢ لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَٰغِيَةًۭ فِيهَا عَيْنٌۭ جَارِيَةٌۭ فِيهَا سُرُرٌۭ مَّرْفُوعَةٌۭ وَأَكْوَابٌۭ مَّوْضُوعَةٌۭ وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌۭ وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌۭ لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم

The Meaning of Eid: Gratitude and Takbir

Allah tells us in ayah 185 — one single ayah — that Allah begins with the word shahru Ramadan and he concludes the ayah by saying:

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ هُدًۭى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَٰتٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَٱلْفُرْقَانِ ۚ فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ ٱلشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ ۖ وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍۢ فَعِدَّةٌۭ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ ۗ يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُمُ ٱلْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ ٱلْعُسْرَ وَلِتُكْمِلُوا۟ ٱلْعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَىٰكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
(Quran 2:185)

Allah concludes the ayah of shahru Ramadan by saying that all of whatever you have done in the month of Ramadan, it was so that you can complete the number of the days of fasting within the month of Ramadan. And by completing those numbers of days of the month of Ramadan — وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ — you say Allahu Akbar on the day of Eid. So you begin the day by glorifying Allah Dhul Jalal wal Ikram, by magnifying Allah Dhul Jalal wal Ikram, saying the takbir of Allah, chanting his name:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ

وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَاكُمْ — you say Allahu Akbar because of what Allah has guided you. It was only by the tawfiq of Allah that we fasted for 30 days. It was the tawfiq of Allah that we offered Salat al-Taraweeh at night. It was tawfiq from Allah that we made du'a to him Dhul Jalal wal Ikram. It was his permission and his mercy upon us that he enabled us to recite his book in the qiyam and other than the qiyam. It was his mercy upon us that he gave us tawfiq and ability to do his dhikr and to remember him. It was his tawfiq that we gave for his sake and we spent our wealth in order to please him Dhul Jalal wal Ikram.

Thanking Allah for His Blessings

So we need to thank Allah for the ni'mah of Islam:

الحمدُ للهِ على نِعمةِ الإسلام ، الحمدُ للهِ على نِعمةِ القرآن ، الحمدُ للهِ على نِعمةِ رمضان ، الحمدُ للهِ على نِعمةِ الصِّيام

We need to thank Allah. That is why our beloved Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam taught us to begin the day of the celebration of Eid by saying Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar — thanking Allah Dhul Jalal wal Ikram — and enjoying this blessed day, the day of Eid, by thanking Allah. And this is what Allah also said at the end of this ayah: وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ. So you say Allahu Akbar, you say Alhamdulillah, you say SubhanAllah, and you say La ilaha illallah in order to thank Allah.

We must be thankful to Allah Dhul Jalal wal Ikram for all of his blessings and his favors. Although we are unable to count those blessings of Allah Dhul Jalal wal Ikram, we say Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar.

Continuing Good Deeds After Ramadan

Part of thankfulness to Allah Dhul Jalal wal Ikram is that you continue with all those good deeds that you have offered in the month of Ramadan. It would be clear ungratefulness if you stop all those good deeds — whether it is your being regular in your five daily prayers, reciting the Quran, making du'a to Allah, offering the night prayer, and giving in his way. All of those good deeds you need to continue, in order to show your gratefulness and your thankfulness to Allah Dhul Jalal wal Ikram.

Celebrating Eid While Remembering Our Suffering Brothers and Sisters

According to the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, we have to celebrate this day, we have to be happy, and we have to be pleased with this day. Although many of the Muslims around the globe are suffering — people in Palestine, in Gaza, don't forget them; people in Yemen, in Syria, in Burma, in Kashmir, in other parts of the world — Muslims around the globe are suffering, and we as Muslims feel the pain within our hearts.

Because Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said — regarding all the believers and their mutual love for each other — that all of them together are like one single body: if one limb, if one part of the body hurts, then the whole body becomes restless. This is the example that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has given for the ummah.

مَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي تَوَادِّهِمْ وَتَرَاحُمِهِمْ وَتَعَاطُفِهِمْ مَثَلُ الْجَسَدِ إِذَا اشْتَكَى مِنْهُ عُضْوٌ تَدَاعَى لَهُ سَائِرُ الْجَسَدِ بِالسَّهَرِ وَالْحُمَّى
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6011)

Our brothers, our sisters, the children — they are suffering in Gaza. We have to remember them. But it does not mean that we don't enjoy the day of Eid. Rather, we thank Allah by giving for their help and also financially supporting them as much as we can, and this will be an indication of our thankfulness to Allah Dhul Jalal wal Ikram.

Du'a

اللَّهُمَّ انصُرِ الْإِسْلَامَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ ، اللَّهُمَّ أَعِزَّ الْإِسْلَامَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ ، اللَّهُمَّ انصُرْ عِبَادَكَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُوَحِّدِينَ فِي كُلِّ مَكَانٍ ، اللَّهُمَّ انصُرِ الْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي مَشَارِقِ الْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبِهَا ، اللَّهُمَّ انصُرِ الْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ وَالْوِلْدَانِ ، وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ ، وَصَلِّ اللَّهُمَّ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى نَبِيِّنَا وَرَسُولِنَا وَحَبِيبِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّاتِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ

May Allah give us tawfiq and ability to continue with all those good deeds that we have done in the month of Ramadan. May Allah help the Muslims around the globe.

عِيدُكُمْ مُبَارَكٌ — Eid Mubarak. تَقَبَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ صَالِحَ الْأَعْمَالِ — May Allah accept from us and from you all righteous deeds.
