The Joy and Purpose of Eid al-Adha

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ — Brothers and sisters, today is the day of Eid al-Adha. We have two happy occasions in the year to celebrate. And the notable quality of our Eid is that we start the day from the offering of extra Salat, to thank Allah the Creator for His countless blessings, mercy and bounties upon us. When we show our happiness by extra praying and doing Dhikr of Allah:

We also take extra care for the needy. In the month of Ramadan we pay Zakat al-Fitr to the poor and needy before we pray Eid Salat. And in this Eid of Sacrifice we give a portion of meat to the needy. In other words, we acknowledge that we have Huququllah — the right of the Creator, Khaliq, upon us — and Huququl Ibad — the right of the people. This is the beauty of our Deen: check and balance. We do not forget the Creator, Khaliq, as well as the creation, Makhluq.

The Link Between Eid al-Adha and Prophet Ibrahim

There is a great link between this Eid and the Prophet Ibrahim, alayhis salatu was salam. Allah presented him as an example to be followed. And all major religions claim — at least claim — to be followers of the great Prophet Ibrahim, alayhis salatu was salam: like Christians, Yahud, and even the Mushrikeen of Arabia — they used to claim that we are the followers of Ibrahim, alayhis salatu was salam.

These are known as Abrahamic religions — a very famous terminology these days. We have to pause and reflect on the life and beauty of this great Prophet Ibrahim, alayhis salatu was salam.

His beauty is in the declaration of the oneness of Allah. As he said: I have submitted myself to the Lord of the Universe. And his whole life was centred around this.

Tawheed — The Foundation of All Prophetic Calling

During his whole life — and as with all other Prophets as well — he started his Da'wah work from Tawheed, the oneness of Allah. Because as long as our Iman is strong, our faith is solid in believing in Tawheed — the oneness of Allah — our good deeds will be fruitful and accepted by Allah.

When Prophet Ibrahim, alayhis salatu was salam, conveyed this message of Tawheed about the oneness of Allah the Creator, he faced a lot of problems, hard times and struggles. His challenges started not from outside, but from his own home. His father threatened to stone him. Can you imagine a father saying to his son — because of this Tawheed, because of the oneness of Allah — and then he forced him to leave his home. Ibrahim, alayhis salatu was salam, was ready to accept this. His close family members and friends became his enemies.

This was a clear threat from the father and family members. And then later on, the authorities of the time tried to burn him alive. But by the mercy of Allah, he was protected. And miraculously, he came out from the flame unharmed. Then they forced him, Ibrahim, alayhis salatu was salam, to leave his birthplace, his hometown. And he accepted this. And he did Hijrah — migration. But Prophet Ibrahim, alayhis salatu was salam, refused to compromise in his faith, belief and religious obligations.

Our Prayer, Sacrifice, Life and Death — All for Allah

According to the teaching of the Quran, when we declare the oneness of Allah — Tawheed of Allah Dhul Jalal wal-Ikram — we believe that we have to worship Him alone. And indeed, our prayer, our sacrifice, our life and our death are all for the sake of Allah Dhul Jalal wal-Ikram.

As we remember the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim and the last and final messenger Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, we have to ask ourselves a question: Are we ready to give up at least the haram and prohibited things — our desires, or cultural values — if they conflict and contradict with Islamic teaching? If we cannot give up prohibited things, then how could we expect to give up and sacrifice the bigger challenges in life?

Qurbani — An Act of Ibadah According to the Sunnah

And because this is the Eid of Sacrifice, we have to remember one important point: Qurbani is an act of Ibadah, and every Ibadah should be performed according to the Sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself used to slaughter two sheep, eat from it, feed his family members, and he would also give a portion to the poor and needy. Because of the competition between some charities — although their niyyah may be good, excellent, as they want to help the poor and needy — Ibadah should still be according to the Sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Qurbani — Udhiyah — sacrifice, is not Sadaqah.

The Importance of Niyyah — Sincerity of Intention

And another point: the most important thing is our intention, our niyyah, our sincerity. We will earn reward according to our niyyah and ikhlas. This is as Allah says:

And as the first hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari states:

According to our niyyah and sincerity, we will get reward from Allah.

My brothers and sisters, this is a happy occasion. As we enjoy ourselves by wearing nice clothes and eating delicious food, do not forget to share your joy with family members and those in need. Let your children also feel that this is our day of Eid.

Closing Du'a

May Allah accept our Qurbani. May Allah accept our good deeds. May Allah accept the Hajj of the pilgrims and make their return from Hajj easy for them.

وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
