Pregnant in the Month of Ramadan?
What do I do if I am pregnant in the month of Ramadan and I find it difficult to fast? The ruling for a pregnant woman is that she will have to decide whether or not she's comfortable with fasting. If she feels that by me fasting it will harm my body or it will harm my child, then she will not fast — and Allah once again has given us that concession.
This deen was not made as a difficult lifestyle or a difficult model to follow, but rather there are concessions that we are given — that we identify as concessions, not as norms — and we choose to use them when it falls upon us.
Allah has told us that He wishes to make it easy for you and does not want this to become difficult. So if I feel that by fasting it will harm me, it will make it difficult for me, it will make me very sick, and it will harm my child — then we will not fast. That person will simply make it up at a later time.
What About Spirituality During Ramadan?
Now, what does that person do for their spirituality? This question is asked by many people. The answer to that is: the idea of the month of Ramadan is getting closer to Allah, and one of those ways is through fasting — but Allah has given us different ways that we can get close to Him.
Amongst those things that we can do is dhikr of Allah, recite the Quran, pray tahajjud, pray nawafil, and also just reflect upon the greatness of Allah. Allah says there are people who reflect upon the creation of Allah:
And also being people that can serve our community. Hopefully all of these things can make it up for us when we are unable to fast because of how our body is feeling, and we can still feel the spirit of the month of Ramadan.
