Given that it is the summer months and most of our youth are not doing much at home, I decided to start a mini series. Today will be the first part and insha'Allah we'll continue - not the next Wednesday, but the Wednesday after that insha'Allah. We're going to continue for a few series insha'Allah and do something that will be of benefit even for the youth and for the adults insha'Allah. That will be going over a tafsir of the story of Sulaiman (alayhis salam) as it is mentioned in Surat An-Naml.

So if you have a copy of the Quran on your iPhone or for translation, it will be nice if you can pull it out and we're going to be going over this selection to benefit from the story of Sulaiman and the Queen of Sheba and the story of the jinn and the chair - all of this insha'Allah just to have some benefit from a very profound story full of moral lessons and benefits.

So we begin with verse 15 and this will go for a number of lessons as we said insha'Allah ta'ala. We'll go for maybe until like half an hour and then insha'Allah continue in our next lesson insha'Allah ta'ala. This is the longest section of the whole Quran that deals with Sulaiman (alayhis salam). This is the longest section of the Quran that deals with Sulaiman and it has a unique story that is not repeated anywhere else in the Quran. This is the only time it is mentioned in the Quran.

The Beginning: Knowledge as the Source of Power

In verse number 15, Allah begins:

وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا دَاوُودَ وَسُلَيْمَانَ عِلْمًا ۖ وَقَالَا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي فَضَّلَنَا عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٍ مِّنْ عِبَادِهِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

"We granted Dawood and Sulaiman knowledge. The both of them said: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (Alhamdulillah) - who has favoured us over so many other of his servants."

The Humble Origins of Dawood

Dawood (alayhis salam) was from a very humble background - his story is mentioned in Surat Al-Baqarah and we'll come to that another time insha'Allah ta'ala. Dawood (alayhis salam) was born the son of a shepherd. He had no idea who he would become. He was from a very poor family, very mediocre family. They didn't have nobility, they didn't have wealth.

In his time there was the Prophet Samuel. The Prophet Samuel, because if you know from our sharia, from our seerah, from our hadith, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said the children of Israel - Allah blessed them to always have a prophet one after another. Every time a prophet died, another would come in his place. This is unique to the children of Israel. No other nation was given this, and this is the favour that Allah says multiple times in the Quran: that I have favoured you over all other nations.

We also affirm this favour, and the other group - the Jewish people - say the favour still lasts. We say no. What was the favour? Continuity of prophets. When the continuity of prophets stopped, the favour stops as well. This is what we believe.

So the first of their prophets was of course Ibrahim, and then Ishaq, and the last of their prophets was Yahya and then Isa (alayhis salam). So from Ishaq and then onwards to Ya'qub - of course technically Ya'qub is their father. Bani Israel - Israel is Ya'qub, but still we say Ibrahim, Ishaq, then Ya'qub. Ya'qub's 12 sons are the Bani Israel.

So they have their founder is a prophet - that's Ya'qub - and his father and his father were prophets. And then throughout all of history they had prophets, prophets, prophets until finally Yahya comes and says: "Now we'll have the biggest of all prophets. You must believe in him." And Yahya said that is Isa ibn Maryam. And you know what happened - they rejected him.

The Rise of Dawood Through Knowledge

Now around 900 BC - this is 3,000 years ago - Allah blessed the Bani Israel with their greatest political prophet. Not their greatest prophet, because Ibrahim and Isa are Ulul Azam and Musa is Ulul Azam, but there was a prophet who was a king as well, and this is Dawood.

But when Dawood was born, he didn't know he would become a prophet or a king. He had neither on his agenda. In fact, when Dawood (alayhis salam) was born, the children of Israel did not have power or a kingdom. They only had piety and religiosity and a prophet. They were persecuted, they were attacked, and so they begged their prophet Samuel - they begged him: "Give us a king! We don't just want a prophet, we want power, we want izzah, we want an army to fight so we can defend ourselves."

And as you know, Surah Baqarah - Allah (Azza wa Jal) says to them on the tongue of Samuel: "Are you sure you're able to live up to it? What if the king said to you to fight and you didn't fight? This would be a calamity from Allah." And you know that story that happened.

So Allah (Azza wa Jal) appointed Talut as their king - not their prophet. The king Samuel was the prophet, Talut was their king. And Talut attacked Goliath (Jalut), and in that battle he wasn't able to fight Goliath. Goliath was gonna fight back, and a young 17-year-old teenager by the name of Dawood says: "Give me a chance."

"Who are you? You're not a warrior, you're not a fighter, you haven't trained. How can we allow you?"

He said: "No, give me a chance." And as you know the story, that he used his slingshot and successfully managed to get rid of Jalut. And from this, the ascent of Dawood the simple shepherd began. Nobody knew - Allah knew.

And Allah says: Not through wealth, not through physical power - how did they rise up? Through ilm. So through ilm, Dawood began to rise up, up, up until finally Allah chose him to be a prophet-king - the first, the first and one of the only, because his son Sulaiman is also a prophet-king.

The Exception of Prophet-Kings

Dawood and Sulaiman were exceptions to the rule. Generally, kingship and prophethood are combined or separate? What are they? Separate. In the hadith in Sahih Bukhari, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

جَاءَنِي جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُخَيِّرُكَ أَنْ تَكُونَ عَبْدًا رَسُولًا أَوْ مَلِكًا رَسُولًا

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

"Jibreel came to me and said: Allah is giving you a choice. Do you want to be a king as well, or are you content being an abd and not a king?" And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "I want to be an abd rasool. I don't want to be a king. I want to be an abd rasool. I don't want to become a king."

So he was given the privilege and he said: "I don't want it. I would - I'm happy where I am." Therefore, of the exceptions to the rule: Dawood and Sulaiman.

When Dawood became older, he married the daughter of Talut, and so when Talut died, then Dawood became the king and he had already become the Prophet - Samuel appointed Dawood to be the prophet as well. So he then founded the original kingdom of Israel that is mentioned in the Old Testament, and we also believe this. We believe this as well - there was an original ancient kingdom and that was called the Kingdom of Israel, and it lasted only two, three centuries. Then it fizzled out, broke up into two. It's a small time frame, and Dawood and Sulaiman was the pinnacle of this kingdom.

So Dawood founded the kingdom and he began the construction of the temple, and Sulaiman finished the construction of the temple.

Gratitude as a Mark of Humility

So Allah says: "We gave Dawood and Sulaiman knowledge. Through knowledge they rose their ranks." And the both of them said: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (Alhamdulillah) - "who has blessed us and favored us over so many other of his servants."

This is a sentiment that all of us should feel - not because of arrogance, but because of humility. Every one of us should feel a sense of gratefulness: Allah has blessed me, Allah has given me so much, Allah has given me more than so many other people - not out of arrogance, but out of humility, out of shukr to Allah.

The True Inheritance of Sulaiman

Sulaiman inherited Dawood. Inherited what? Wealth? No - the kingdom and the prophethood. As for wealth, Dawood had 19 sons or 17 sons - Dawood had a lot of sons. And according to our sharia, the prophets do not leave inheritance. All prophets - when a prophet dies, all of them, their inheritance is given to the fuqara and the bayt al-mal.

So when Allah is saying Sulaiman inherited from Dawood, inherited what? Not the money - he inherited the kingdom and the prophethood. The role that Dawood had, Sulaiman now had.

The Unique Gifts of Sulaiman

And Sulaiman said - so this story is about Sulaiman. Dawood is mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah and in other surahs. Sulaiman said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ عُلِّمْنَا مَنطِقَ الطَّيْرِ وَأُوتِينَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْءٍ

"Oh people, we have been taught the communication of the birds, and we have been given a little bit of everything. We have been given a little bit of everything - whatever you can imagine and think of, Allah has given me what I need. This is a great blessing from Allah."

Now this was a unique gift that Allah gave to the Prophet Sulaiman. Even the Prophet Dawood did not have it. The Prophet Dawood had other gifts. Sulaiman had the gift of controlling the creation of Allah. He could control the wind, he could control the jinn, he could control the animals. So this was a unique privilege that Allah gave only to Sulaiman.

And because of this, even our Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), out of modesty, refused to accept this gift. Again, hadith in Sahih Bukhari: that Shaitan came to the Prophet Sulaiman in salah, and the Prophet Sulaiman was able to catch and capture him. And he said: "If I wanted to..." Shaitan came to waswasa, Shaitan came to break the concentration - so Iblis, Iblis himself.

So the Prophet said: "I grabbed onto him and I was going to tie him to the pillar so that all of you could have seen Shaitan, but I remembered that Allah had gifted Sulaiman the control of the jinn, so I didn't take that privilege."

In other words, he had it. He could have taken it if he wanted to. He could have had it as well, but just like with Dawood, he said: "I don't want it. I have something better." So he refused also to have the control of the jinn, even though if he wanted to, he could have controlled the jinn as well.

The Language of the Birds

So Sulaiman says: "We have been taught the language of the birds." Why only the birds? Wasn't he taught the language of the horses, the language of all the animals? Why did he mention birds?

It is said the reason he mentioned birds: Number one, the voice of the birds is the most melodious. The chirping of the birds - there is no animal whose voice is more pleasing to our ear. It's not like the braying of the donkey, it's not like any other animal. The chirping of the birds, Allah has blessed us to love it like no other sound of the animals. And so by saying "I can understand even the chirping of the birds," then obviously that which is lesser than this can be understood.

Another reason why only birds are mentioned, even though he has the knowledge of all of them, is that birds are the ones that are least in our control. They're the least domesticated, they're the ones flying away. And Sulaiman says: "I can understand them." So by pointing to the birds, it's understood everything else has been given to him as well.

And once again, this was a gift also given to our Prophet (ﷺ), but he didn't take advantage of it out of respect for Sulaiman. Again, all of these gifts the Prophet (ﷺ) could also have them, and he communicated with the animals multiple times - multiple times in the seerah he communicated with animals.

Of them is a famous incident reported in many books of shama'il and seerah and sunnah: that once the Prophet (ﷺ) entered a garden, and immediately a camel came rushing to him and put his face on the Prophet's (ﷺ) shoulder and began making the noises of camels and crying, crying. The Prophet (ﷺ) hugged the camel, patted the camel, and then said: "Where is the owner of this?"

So the man said: "Here." He said: "Your camel has complained to me that you are beating it and not feeding it well and overworking it. So fear Allah with regards to these animals who cannot communicate, because Allah will ask you about them on the Day of Judgment. The animals cannot communicate to men - they can communicate to the Prophets, to Sulaiman and to Prophet (ﷺ). Fear Allah - you have to answer to Allah for this."

And in the hadith in Abu Dawood, the Prophet (ﷺ) was going on an expedition, and when he was away or maybe in...

At the back of the army, some of the sahaba they found a nest and they got some of the baby birds, the chicks of the nest, and they began playing with them. And the mother bird came and began chirping, and the Prophet ﷺ was in the front. He said, "Where are the people that have taken the babies of this bird? It is complaining to me that its babies have been taken away." سبحان الله, right? So the Prophet ﷺ was also given this gift, but he didn't constantly take advantage of it like Sulaiman did. Out of, again, as he said, "Sulaiman wanted it, let him have it." Again, this was his modesty, this was his كرم, his generosity, that this was a gift Allah gave to Sulaiman. "Let him have it." Only once in a while when he needed it, or when Allah wanted him to, then he took advantage of this. Otherwise, as a rule, Sulaiman could understand all the animals all the time.

So Sulaiman ﷺ says, "Allah has blessed me with so many things. I understand the animals and everything I want I have been given something of it. Indeed, this is a great blessing."

And all of the armies of Sulaiman were gathered in front of him. This must have been a day of parade, a day of the military. Sulaiman was a king, he was a military general, so he is inspecting his troops. So all of the جن and the إنس and the طير - once again, the birds are mentioned. Why aren't the other animals mentioned? Because if you can gather the birds, then you can gather the domestic animals. If the birds are in front of you, then definitely the horses and the mules and the camels are in front of you as well. So all of these animals gathered in front of him.

And of course, we know for a fact that Sulaiman - Allah blessed him to control the جن in a way that once again no other prophet was given and taken advantage of. And what this means is that Allah subjugated the جن to the command of Sulaiman.

The Power of Prophet Sulaiman Over the Jinn

Sulaiman would say something and the jinn have to follow it and Sulaiman could see the jinn which is a privilege that we do not have. The prophets have it, the prophets have it and Sulaiman had it. The jinn live in a world beyond our world. Allah says they see you from a place you cannot see them. If you want to get physics here, they have a dimension other than our dimension. They inhabit a dimension other than our dimension. They can pop into our dimension, we cannot pop into theirs, but the prophets can see that dimension and especially Sulaiman can see that dimension.

So the jinn are not hidden from Sulaiman. The jinn are not hidden and he can command them and they must obey him. And this also shows us that the presumption that some people have that some people can control the jinn is a false presumption. Only the Prophet Sulaiman was given that power as a default and the Prophet Muhammad was offered it and he didn't want it. Only the Prophet Sulaiman.

The misconception that some people have that human beings, either pious or evil, can control the jinn - either awliya or either magicians, sahara - can control the jinn, this is false, batil. No one has power over the jinn of our makhluqat. How can a man have power over the jinn? By what? Allah gave Sulaiman power over the jinn and this is from Allah directly and only for Sulaiman.

The Valley of Ants

So he sees all of the jinn, all of the ins and all of the birds. Then they come across the valley of ants and one of the ants said, "Oh fellow ants, enter into your houses in case Sulaiman and his army crush you without even knowing of your existence."

So this ayah tells us something we all know now and that is the ants have a very systematic mechanism of communication. Out of all of the animals, the ants have one of the most sophisticated mechanisms of communication. Even though we cannot understand, we know they are communicating. Even though we cannot hear, we know that amongst themselves one ant - danger happens or a food comes - and within milliseconds the entire colony is aware. How? We don't know. We can see the ant is going and doing something and the rest of the ants all go away. Something is happening but we do not know.

So this is being referenced in the Quran. One ant, one of the guardian ants, one of the soldier ants - because you know ants have levels as we know now. We know back then they didn't know, now we know ants have roles and assignments. So one of the sentry ants that is protecting the colony, it sees Sulaiman and the army so it immediately says, "This is a massive army. There's going to be tens of thousands of beasts, there's going to be hundreds of thousands of men and they will definitely trample over you. We need to go underground." So he tells the rest of the ants, "Go underground."

And then our scholars mention the adab of the animals. He gave an excuse for Sulaiman's army - they're not doing it out of malice, they're doing it without even knowing what they're doing. So defending the honor of somebody even though the ant didn't know that the other people will find out, saying this is not malice, this is an innocent thing they're doing accidentally.

Sulaiman's Response and Prayer

So when Sulaiman hears this, obviously it's something that is bemusing, it's something that is interesting and anecdotal and funny in a positive way. He smiled and laughed at what he had heard and he said, "Oh Allah, bless me and guide me to do what?" Three things. All of us memorize these three things and apply them in our lives:

Number one: that I can be thankful of all of these blessings what you have given me. You have given me so much, oh Allah, I want to be thankful. Make me thankful.

Number two: that I do deeds that you are pleased with. Notice the deeds have a description - I want you to be pleased with them.

And cause me to enter into the righteous people and die amongst the salihin.

These are the three things all of us should aim for: be thankful for what you have been given, demonstrate good deeds that Allah is pleased with, and pray to Allah that you die a righteous death and be resurrected with the righteous people. Very simple summary of reality of iman.

The Story of the Queen of Sheba Begins

The Missing Hoopoe Bird

Then the story of the Queen of Sheba begins and that is the main part of the story. He found the birds missing. He examined the birds and there was something missing. Some say that this particular bird, the hudhud, the hoopoe, it was assigned to find water for the entire army. So when they're looking for water, Sulaiman says, "Where's the hudhud? Where's the hoopoe bird?" And it was not to be found.

And others say that Sulaiman was being a very particular general. Just like you're going through the lists and the charts, he was going through all the lists and the charts and he found out one of the species was missing. And of course he has the leader of all the species - the leader of every animal would have been in that army. He examined the birds and he found missing and he said, "Where is the hudhud, the hoopoe bird?"

And the hoopoe bird - I wish we could show it online, Google it - it's a very beautiful bird. It has a majestic protrusion coming out that has different colors on it. It's a very beautiful relatively small bird, a bit larger than a pigeon. It's not a very large bird. And it is said that the hoopoe bird is able to find water better than other birds and it is said this is why Sulaiman was looking for the hudhud.

So he said, "Where is the hudhud? I cannot find the hudhud. Is it possible that he's not here when we need him?" He was going to be punished or even killed. Look, if you're a leader you cannot be lax. If you're a boss, if you're a CEO, if you're a military general, there cannot be laxity in the army and laxity needs to be disciplined. So Sulaiman announces either he will be punished or even executed, or he'd better bring a valid excuse. Once again showing: be a strict boss but have a sign of mercy as well. Make sure they live up to their standards but also be compassionate if they cannot do so.

The Hoopoe's Return and News

So the bird came back quickly. Wasn't too far away, it was just a matter of time, a few minutes. The bird came back. The bird knew it was supposed to be there. The hudhud knew, but it's coming just slightly after the time that it was supposed to be there. Immediately, before Sulaiman says something, because he knows he's in trouble, the bird says, "I have come from a place and knowledge you do not have. I'm bringing you information you do not have and I'm going to tell you about the kingdom of Saba with certain knowledge."

Pause here. Sulaiman was in Jerusalem. Sulaiman was in Baitul Maqdis. Saba is a land in Yemen. It is one of the kingdoms of Yemen. And the kingdom of Saba was the greatest civilization pre-Islam in southern Arabia and it was contemporaneous to Sulaiman alayhis salaam.

In that region of Yemen there are many remnants, archaeological remains of the kingdom of Saba. In that area you have one of the human architectural wonders of pre-modernity and that is the great dam of Yemen called the dam of Ma'rab. The dam of Ma'rab was one of the earliest and largest dams built in human history and it was built hundreds of years before Jesus, hundreds of years. It was two thousand, three thousand years, three thousand years old. And the people of Saba would use the water - to block the dam to allow it to go into their agriculture - so they had fertile ground year round.

And Allah mentions this in the Quran: there is a wonder, a miracle for the people of Saba. This is mentioned in the Quran. They had many gardens left and right. Allah is saying, "I have given you what I haven't given anyone else. Eat of the bounties of your Lord and be thankful to Allah."

The Queen of Saba

So the kingdom of Saba was a kingdom in Yemen and at that time they had a queen. The name of this queen in our literature, which is not hadith, it's not Quran, is they say her name is Bilqis. But it doesn't really matter what her name is. There's the Queen of Saba.

And the hudhud comes back and says, إِنِّي وَجَدتُّ امْرَأَةً تَمْلِكُهُمْ - "The ruler of Saba is a queen and she has been given..." Now the same phrase that Sulaiman ascribed to himself is now being used for the Queen of Saba and there's an intentional reason for doing this.

The hudhud - one of our scholars said, in fact this is from the tabi'een - said that when Sulaiman was looking at all of his army and he sensed his power and he sensed his izzah, there was something that comes into a person's heart. So Allah sent the smallest of birds, the hudhud, to say to Sulaiman, "Ya Sulaiman, you're not the only one that has power and I will bring you information you do not know even though you're the prophet."

This is similar to what happened to Musa alayhis salaam when he stood amongst his people and somebody said, "Who's the most knowledgeable?" And Musa automatically, without any arrogance, just assumed, "I'm the most knowledgeable man on earth." And Allah sent Jibreel down saying, "How can you say that? There is a servant of mine called Khidr who has knowledge you do not have," humbling him. Anytime anything comes in your heart this is not good, even if the prophets get it.

So one of the tabi'een said that Sulaiman alayhis salaam was looking at all of his creation, all of the makhluqat in front of him, and something in his heart. So Allah sent the smallest bird to say, "Ya Sulaiman, there is a kingdom that is powerful, mighty. I have not seen any kingdom like it and they're ruled by a woman and she has a magnificent throne" - i.e., it's better than your throne. "She has a magnificent throne."

And it is said this was a throne - you know its top part was gold, the bottom part was ivory, rubies - you can imagine it was a massive throne. And of course the purpose of the throne is to show izzah and wealth and power, intimidation. When delegations come then you're supposed to be intimidated.

So the hudhud says, "My excuse was that I found this kingdom and I wanted to find more information for you. I have come to tell you this is a threat to your kingdom. It is as powerful in terms of military might, or maybe less or whatever, than yours. You need to be aware of it."

Their Worship and Sulaiman's Test

So Sulaiman said - and of course Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, that or sorry the hudhud says as Allah describes - the hudhud: they were not worshipping Allah, they were worshipping the sun. They were worshipping the sun and shaitan has made this appealing to them and they are not rightly guided. Why don't they do sajdah to Allah who has created the heavens and earth and taken the seed from the root? And Allah knows what you are hiding and what you are keeping in public.

"I'm gonna test: are you telling the truth or are you lying? I will do one more ayah inshallah then we'll continue next week. Take this message of mine, throw it to them, then turn away and wait to see what they come back with."

The Letter to the Queen

Now Sulaiman is skeptical. He wants to test. How can there be a mighty kingdom? How can there be a civilization? And again he's in Jerusalem, this is the other side of the world - Yemen. So he says to the bird, "I'm gonna write a letter, hand deliver it to the queen."

Now generally speaking, when you are a king or queen, when you're a minister, prime minister, the letter is never delivered to you. The letter goes through a long channel. The hudhud is gonna demonstrate the power of Sulaiman by the smallest of deeds. The hudhud will bypass all of the guards, all of the fortresses, all of the palaces, and when the queen is sleeping in her bed alone, the hudhud will enter the room and drop the beautiful parchment.

It is said that it was scrawled, perfumed, it was encrusted with... even the elegant, because she says, "A noble letter has come to me."

The physical and the internal form of the letter was unique. So can you imagine you are the queen and a bird comes and drops a letter in your lap? This is going to be mind-boggling! This is like a miracle that the power of Sulaiman is being manifested in the most interesting of ways. How? Who can do this? How can it be done?

And this is exactly what happens. The هدهد (hudhud) comes and drops the letter in her palace, in her bed, and she reads it directly. And it is said it was in her language, which was even more crazy because in that time frame you didn't have United Nations linguists translating for you. You didn't have... no! But Sulaiman had a knowledge of this, and so Sulaiman wrote the letter in her language of Saba'ik. It's a language called Saba'ik, it's a script of Saba'ik.

And for a far away civilization to send a beautiful letter in her script and language, delivered to her bedroom automatically, the power of Sulaiman is being manifested in ways no army, no delegation needs to do. So this is what frightened the queen.

And we will pause here inshallah because it's 11 o'clock, and then we'll continue inshallah from where we left off - not next week but the week after that inshallah. You'll get the email and update and we'll continue the story of Sulaiman. Jazakumullah khair.
