Opening and Du'a Requests

As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. اللهم حرم هذه الوجوه الطاهرة عن النار يا رب العالمين - May Allah keep all these beautiful faces away from the hellfire.

We have two requests for du'a. Brother Qasim, one of our beloved brothers, his father is in the hospital, in the ICU. And also, one of our regular attendees and one of the ex-board members, Dr. Rizwan, his brother is in the hospital in Bangladesh also. May Allah give them complete shifa.

We ask Allah the Great, Lord of the Great Throne, to heal them.

O Allah, heal our sick and the sick of the Muslims, and have mercy on our dead and the dead of the Muslims.

The Divine Scale on the Day of Judgment

Allah says in His noble book:

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims.

O you who have believed, fear your Lord, Who created you from one soul, and created from it its mate, and spread among them many men and women. And fear Allah in Whom you ask for help and mercy. Indeed, Allah is ever watching over you.

O you who have believed, fear Allah and say the right words. He will correct your deeds and forgive your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, he has certainly attained a great success.

As for what follows, the most truthful hadith is the book of Allah. And the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ. And the worst of things are innovations, and every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.

The Scale of Allah

The scale of Allah - how much will you weigh on the Day of Judgment? Because as Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, we believe that there will be a scale, Meezan. And this Meezan has two pans, one for the Hasanat and one for the Sayyi'at, one for the good deeds and one for the evil deeds. Ibn Abbas said it has a Lisan also, it has a tongue. And each one of those pans, if you put the heavens and the earth in it, it will fit. Only Allah knows how big is this Meezan. But we believe that there is a Meezan.

Abu Huraira narrated a hadith that is agreed upon in Bukhari and Muslim:

(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A man, a bulky fat man, will come on the Day of Judgment and he will not be equal to the weight of the wing of a mosquito in the sight of Allah."

And he recited from Surah Al-Kahf: "On the Day of Judgment, we will have no weight for them."

The False Standards of Success

My brothers and sisters, in the Jahiliyyah, and unfortunately many people till now, they think that having a lot of blessings is a sign of Allah's love. The kuffar of Quraysh used to say:

"We have more wealth and children, and no way we will be punished."

Allah answered them:

"Neither your wealth nor your children is what will bring you closer to Us. No, no, no. The one who is close to me is the one who believes and does righteous deeds. These will have their a'mal multiplied, and they will be safe in their mansions."

Unfortunately, our assessment and evaluation of people is according to their financial status. "Oh, this man is so successful. He has this company, that company, this degree, that degree, that much money." Does he pray? "No, wallahi, he does not pray." "But he's a very successful man." Success in what, ya akhi? What kind of success is this?

The only one who has real success is the one who obeys Allah and His Prophet. Is it a coincidence? Every minbar on earth, on every Friday, reminding Muslims all over the world, what is the category of success?

The Prophet's Teaching on True Worth

(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

A man passed by Rasulullah ﷺ, so he asked the man next to him sitting down, "What do you think of this guy?"

"This man is one of the honorable people of the city, of the town. If he sought anyone in marriage, he should be given. And if he speaks, he should be listened to. And if he intercedes for anyone, they should accept his intercession."

Rasulullah ﷺ was quiet. Then another man passed. And he said, "What about this guy? What do you think of this guy?"

"This is a man from the poor people of the Muslims. He is a poor guy. If he speaks, nobody would listen to him. If he comes to ask for someone in marriage, nobody will give him. And if he asks for intercession, forget about it. Nobody will accept his intercession."

Look at the method and the eloquence of how Rasulullah ﷺ will teach his sahaba and the ummah after that. He could have immediately given the message with one statement. But he took this example of that first wealthy man and then the example of the poor man and then he told that man who was sitting down: "This second guy that you said he is one of the poor Muslims that nobody looks at is worth the earth full, the earth full of the first guy."

Not a masjid full, not a town full, the earth full of the first guy. What does that mean? You judged. You judged according to dunya matters. You judged according to what you see. Oh this luxury and all that. So immediately we did not even know what Rasulullah ﷺ knew. That is not the way we judge people.

True Fame vs. Worldly Fame

Once, when Umar was the Khalifa and one of his men was reading the names of the shuhada, of the people who were martyred in the battlefield. So he was telling them, "So and so died Ya Amir al-Mumineen, and so and so died Ya Amir al-Mumineen, and so and so died Ya Amir al-Mumineen, and there are six that you do not know. I'm not going to mention their names." So Umar cried and said, "Allah is not going to harm them if Umar knew them or did not know them as long as Allah knows who they are."

My brothers and sisters, how many people that they are famous on earth, but nobody knows about them in the Mala'il A'la, in the heavens. And how many people that they are unknown on earth, but they are so famous in the sight of Allah. And that is what matters. What is your title up there? What's your title up there?

Here, CEO, president, Amir, doctor, lawyer, whatever, accountant. What is your title up there? What is it? Is it Saim, Qaim, Mutasaddiq, Kareem, Jawad? What is it up there? What is your title up there? This is what matters. That is what matters.

The True Scale

Our true scale, ya ikhwan, the true scale is the scale of Allah.

On that day, this is the true, the haqq weight, the haqq weight, the haqq title. And whomsoever his scale is heavy, they are the successful ones.

According to the people, Ibrahim was a fatah. "Oh, we heard of a fatah. We heard a young lad, a young boy, he's talking about our gods, his name is Ibrahim." But what is Ibrahim to Allah? To them, he was a fatah. To Allah, he was a nation. Don't go by what people talk about you. Some people, sometimes they pump you so much that you start believing what they're saying. And while you could be nothing in the sight of Allah.

Ibrahim, fatah. Abu Lahab, Qurayshi, Hashimi, Ghani. Abu Lahab, he was from Quraysh, from Banu Hashim, very rich, leadership, you name it. This is for the people. For Allah, He will be burned in hell. Bilal, Bilal, he was black slave. Rasulullah ﷺ said, "I heard your footsteps in Jannah. I heard your footsteps in Jannah."

What does it matter what people say about you, if you are already so elevated in the sight of Allah?

And we shall put the balance of justice on the Day of Judgment. The balance of justice on the Day of Judgment. No one, no one will be dealt with unjustly. And if it was the weight of a mustard seed, I will bring it.

On that day, the weight is not by the kilo, it's not by the pound, it's by the weight of a mustard seed. Extremely sensitive mizan. Extremely sensitive scale. Everybody will be dealt justly. If it was just a dollar that you gave, it will be recorded. If it was a smile in your brother's face, it will be recorded. If it was one word that you made fun of him, it will be recorded. And on that day, everybody will be dealt with justly.

What Will Be Weighed?

What is it that will be weighed on the Day of Judgment? Scholars differed. Some people said the person himself will be weighed and they used the hadith that we narrated in the beginning. Some others said, no, no, no, the a'mal will be weighed. And others said, the scrolls of the a'mal will be weighed. And others said, all three of them, and this is where the consensus, all three of them will be weighed.

My brothers and sisters, how can I make my scale heavy on the Day of Judgment while I am still above the ground? That will be the details in the second khutbah. Say this and ask Allah for forgiveness. So ask His forgiveness. Indeed, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Second Khutbah: How to Make Your Scale Heavy

Number One: La Ilaha Illa Allah

Number one, the heaviest thing in the scale, from an aqeedah perspective, is لا إله إلا الله. It's a very long hadith. Just go home and look for the hadith of al-bitaqa, the hadith of the piece of paper. It proves that لا إله إلا الله is the heaviest thing that me and you have.

Living by لا إله إلا الله. Dying by لا إله إلا الله. Doing business by لا إله إلا الله. Treating our parents by لا إله إلا الله. Raising our children on لا إله إلا الله.

Wallahi ya ikhwan, the enemies of Islam, they are trying their best to put doubt in my heart and your heart and our children's heart about this deen. They are working so hard.

Allah said in Surah al-Anfal: "They will spend, Allah said, the disbelievers, the non-believers, they will spend their wealth. They spend their wealth to keep people away from Islam. They will spend it, and they will regret it, and then they will be defeated." These are the words from Allah.

No one is more truthful than Allah. You are seeing an ayah. They are spending and they will keep spending. But for me:

My salah, my sacrifice, my life, and everything that comes under my life, and my death, is all for the sake of Allah. So the heaviest thing in this scale is لا إله إلا الله.

Number Two: Good Manners

Second, Rasulullah ﷺ said:

(Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 4799)

Nothing is heavier in this scale than good manners. Good manners.

Good Manners: The Foundation of Faith

What does good manners, what does it mean? What are good manners? Ibn al-Mubarak said good manners are three things: بسط الوجه، وبذل المعروف، وكف الأذى. All these three combined constitute good manners.

Having a cheerful face, always smiling, people would love to look at you. بذل المعروف, you are always looking for any place to do something good, anyone to help. You are kareem, you are generous, you are kind, you are loving, you favor people over yourself. فاستبقوا الخيرات, you are always running to help others. وكف الأذى, and withholding any kind of harm. All three together, all of them constitute good manners.

Good Manners in Our Homes

Manners, ya ikhwan, good manners with your parents. Good manners with your spouse. Wallahi, come sit in my office for five, six hours. Your hair will turn white, if it's black or brown, of what's happening in our homes. The most people that love you the most, your parents, are the main reason for your misery. All the problems for the past two weeks, my parents, my in-laws, my parents, my in-laws.

I mentioned it before, I cannot afford the wedding. She wants to have a wedding because of our culture. It says you have to have a wedding with this much, otherwise what would people say about us? What are they going to say about us? Ya mama, I'm going to go borrow money with riba. Doesn't matter, habibi. Borrow money with riba, but we don't want your uncle to say, look, my daughter is better than you, and my son is better than you. No, go borrow money with riba.

Respect one another. Listen to your wife, my sister. Listen and respect and honor, and make your husband feel like a man. Wallahi, it's very simple. You think the one who told me which foot to enter the bathroom, he forgot to tell me how to treat my wife?

Everything we have detailed, everything. Good manners with our Muslim neighbor, with our non-Muslim neighbor, with our non-Muslim colleague. Good manners. This is the heaviest. Rasulullah ﷺ, our guide to Jannah, he said it's the heaviest thing in the scale.

The Remembrance of Allah

Third, the remembrance of Allah Azza wa Jalla is very heavy. We all know the hadith:

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6682)

Two words, light on the tongue, heavy in the scale. Beloved to the Most Merciful. Heavy in the scale. سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ.

In another narration, Rasulullah ﷺ said, الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ تَمْلَأُ الْمِيزَانَ. Allahu Akbar. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ fills the scale.

Wallahi, say الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ that Allah guided you to come to Jumu'ah. Say الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ that Allah made you from the people who listen and they are dying to apply. Say الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ because as we are sitting here as Muslims obeying Allah coming to Jumu'ah, there are millions of Muslims disobeying Allah. May Allah guide us and guide them. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ from the bottom of your heart, تَمْلَأُ الْمِيزَانَ, it fills the scale.

Salatul Janazah: A Mountain of Reward

Fourth, praying Salatul Janazah and going to the cemetery to witness the burial. Rasulullah ﷺ, he said, "Whomsoever does that, whomsoever pray the janazah only, he will get a qirat. And whomsoever pray the janazah and go to the cemetery, he will get two qirat. Ya Rasulullah, how big is the qirat?" He said, أَثْقَلُ, heavier than the mountain of Uhud.

Allahu Akbar. The Salat is literally one minute, 60 seconds and you will get a reward heavier than Uhud. And you see people praying the Salat, the fard, and they leave. Ya akhi, one more minute, what is it worth? If I tell you stay and you will have $500, wallahi you will stay. And you pray janazah and you ask if there is another janazah so you can wait. But I say mountain of Uhud, yalla, we'll get another mountain next week as if you have guarantee.

Make dua, ya akhi. Ask Allah, اللَّهُمَّ ثَقِّلِ الْمِيزَانَ، اللَّهُمَّ ثَقِّلِ الْمَوَازِينَ, ya akhi, beg Allah, ya Allah, make my scale very heavy on the day of judgment.

A Reality Check: Death Knows No Age

Ya ikhwan, wallahi, maybe you come to Jumu'ah and you see this sheikh, wallahi, I think the khutbah is the same every week. He keeps reminding us about the akhira and reminding us, ya akhi, we want something different. Last week, last week was 29-year-old burial. Guess how old was the man we buried this week? Ten. Ten. Allahu Akbar. May Allah give their families the patience. As parents, we all know what does it mean to lose a child. Ten-year-old.

So some of us, especially my youth brothers and sisters, I'm still young. When I graduate, when I get married, when I have my first baby, when I go to hajj, as if I have guarantee. Those janazahs when they come to our masjid, what are they? Wake up, you're next. What makes you feel or what makes me feel that I'm not next? What is it? When I see a ten-year-old, I'm putting my own hands in the grave. When I see a 29, a 34, a 45, a 62, it's a variety. Any age you want, any age you could think of, you go walk in the cemetery, and you will see it in one of those plaques. Any year. Any year. So don't think that your year is exempted.

So let's work very hard to make that scale extremely heavy on the day of judgment.

May Allah forgive us our sins, and our transgressions in our affairs, and make our feet firm, and help us against the disbelieving people.

O Allah, honor Islam and Muslims, and humiliate polytheists and polytheists.

O Allah, help our brothers in Gaza, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, help them with a mighty victory, and destroy their enemies.

O Allah, O Protector, O Protector, O Protector, protect our brothers everywhere. Protect our weak brothers everywhere. O Merciful Lord, O Merciful Lord, grant us from our wives and offspring, the pleasure of seeing You, and make us leaders for the righteous.

O Lord, grant us good in this world, and good in the Hereafter. Protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

O Lord, do not let our hearts tremble after You have guided us. And grant us mercy from Yourself. You are the Bestower.

And may Allah's prayers be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.
