Eid Al Fitr 2026 Khutbah | Imam Nadim Bashir
By Imam Nadim Bashir | 2026-05-26T10:09:39.284997+00:00 | Topic: Gratitude
Allah is the Greatest, There is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and all praise is due to Allah.
Alhamdulillah, the day of Eid is here, a moment of gratitude. Eid is not a reset button that erases Ramadan. It is a mirror that reveals what Ramadan has placed in your heart. Ramadan trains you to pause, to return, to remember Allah in moments when no one else was watching. Eid arrives to ask you a simple question. What stayed with you?
Allah never intended worship to end with a calendar. He intended to reshape the heart. That is why Allah says:
Allah gave us these days so that we complete these days and thank Allah for the guidance He has granted us. Eid is not only a celebration. It is gratitude for guidance.
The Prophet ﷺ taught us that the best deeds are those done consistently even if they are small. Ramadan showed you what consistency feels like. Eid asks you to protect it.
The joy of Eid is not returning to who you were before Ramadan, but in refusing to let the heart unlearn what it discovered in the month of Ramadan. Celebrate today with joy, with your family, and with gratitude. Carry Ramadan in your life because the greatest Eid gift is not new clothes or gatherings. It is a heart that knows how to return to Allah even after the month of Ramadan has passed.
Welcoming a New Muslim
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I just walked in and this brother, he told me he wanted to take a shahada on the day of Eid, mashallah. So this is brother Isaiah, I don't want to take too much time but I'm gonna say the shahada in Arabic, you repeat after me in Arabic and then we'll do in English.
I bear witness there is none worthy of worship but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad, peace be upon him, is his final messenger.
So brother Isaiah, we have a culture here at Epic that whenever you take your shahada, everyone's gonna hug you. You came on the worst day! But welcome to the family, our family, Islam. And may Allah make this journey an easy one for you.
I want to thank this brother here, Aaron. He has been working with him. You took your shahada some time ago? 8 years ago. He took his shahada and now he led him. So this is how Islam works. You take your shahada, you come to Islam and then you bring others. He's really following the footsteps of Abu Bakr.
So brother Isaiah, of course today is our day of celebration. You escaped Ramadan, you did not have to fast. But welcome.
Khutbah - The Essence of Gratitude
All praise is due to Allah. We seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our souls and from our bad deeds. Whomever Allah guides, no one can misguide him. And whomever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide him. And we bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner. And we bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His messenger.
Brothers and sisters, we find in the Quran that Allah says about the month of Ramadan:
And then Allah tells us that what is the Quran? هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ - It is a source of guidance for people, all of mankind. وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالْفُرْقَانِ - And there are many evidences of guidance in this book. And it is a criterion. Meaning that it helps to differentiate between right and wrong.
And then Allah says:
Whoever witnesses this month, they should fast in this month. And there are certain people who are exempt, like the traveler and the sick person. And they should complete those days later on.
And then Allah says:
Allah does not want to make things difficult for us. In fact, He wants to make things easy for us.
And then He says, Why did He give this Ramadan to us?
So we can complete these days of Ramadan, complete our fasting. And that you can glorify Allah. Allah says, and hopefully, hopefully, you'll be thankful to Allah.
The Three Forms of Gratitude
Brothers and sisters, in this brief reminder, I want to highlight that when we talk about gratitude and shukr, there are three different forms of shukr. Number one is shukr in the heart, which means that we understand the very first thing that we need to do in order to become thankful slaves to Allah, is that we need to have gratitude in the heart. Which means that we understand that why am I being thankful to Allah.
We reflect on the things that are around us, because there are so many blessings around us, and the very first thing that we are thankful is by recognizing everything around us. Look at every single blessing of Allah that we have.
Brothers and sisters, so many times we become unthankful to Allah, because we compare ourselves to what others have. In fact, when it comes to the matters of this dunya, we look at the people who have less than us. And when it comes to the matters of our deen, we aspire to become better in terms of our spirituality.
And Allah, He says in the Quran, when we talk about recognizing the blessings of Allah, He says:
If you try to count the blessings of Allah, you will not be able to count the blessings of Allah. There are so many.
And even if a person did not have anything in terms of materialism. Brothers and sisters, there are so many things within us that we can be thankful to Allah for. Allah says:
Why don't you reflect on yourself? Don't you see within yourself how many blessings there are? The fact that Allah has given you and I the ability to see. Can you imagine if Allah took away our ability to see? Allah gave us the ability to touch.
There are people who touch but they cannot feel anything. There are people who cannot hear. There are people who cannot walk. Brothers and sisters, there are so many of us that we have so much to be thankful for. Today in our society, we are not thankful to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Today our children, they go to our fridge, they open their fridge, their fridge is stocked from top to bottom. And yet they will close their fridge and say, there is nothing to eat. How many times we walk into our closet, and our closets are full of shoes, our closets are full of clothes, and we scan through them, and we say, we have nothing good to wear. Wallahi brothers and sisters, look at everything that we have. And we have so much to be thankful to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for.
Three Forms of Gratitude
Gratitude from the Heart
So the very first thing is, the very first form of gratitude is gratitude from the heart. Recognizing the things around us. This is the very first way of showing our thanks to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Gratitude with the Tongue
The second type of gratitude is gratitude with the tongue. And that is why in so many different things that we do, at the end and at the conclusion of all them, we say what? الحمد لله. We thank Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Our deen is about praising Allah, thanking Allah. Every single rak'ah, we begin Surah Fatiha by saying what? الحمد لله. الحمد لله رب العالمين. When we wake up in the morning, we often say what? الحمد لله الذي أحيانا بعد ما أماتنا وإليه النشور.
Brothers and sisters, Allah tells us in the Quran:
Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ, that for all these blessings that Allah has given you, mention those blessings. Because when you talk about something, it goes into the heart. When a person says, الحمد لله, Allah has given me such and such. الحمد لله, Allah has given me a family. الحمد لله, Allah has given me so many blessings that millions of people are deprived from. Then this will bring, hopefully this will bring gratitude into the heart. So the very second, the second form of gratitude is gratitude with the tongue.
Gratitude in Action
And then the third type of gratitude is, gratitude in action. The best way to show our gratitude to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is to live by the expectations of Allah. Brothers and sisters, Ramadan came, Ramadan went. Let's not go back to our old behaviors. We have been reciting the Quran for 30 days. We have been fasting for 30 days. We have been performing qiyam for 30 days. Now that Ramadan is over, do not become like those who would then neglect the Quran. Do not become like those who would neglect their salat inside the masjid. Do not become like those who will forget the dhikr of Allah azza wa jal.
That is why the best form, they say actions speak louder than words. I can sit here and say, Ya Allah, I'm thankful to You. But the best way to show that gratitude is by serving Allah azza wa jal. Every single thing that we have, we use it to serve Allah azza wa jal. When you as a person, imagine if your parent came to you and said, Beta, my son, give me a glass of water. Then you out of love for your father, you out of love for your mother, you go and you get them a glass of water. Why? Because this is your way of showing your gratitude to your parents. Now if you say, that I am very grateful to my parents, but whatever your parents want from you, you completely reject them, then this is not a form of... this is not you showing or expressing your gratitude.
And Allah says in the Quran, Allah says clearly in the Quran:
There are very few of my slaves, they are truly thankful to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make us from amongst those who are truly thankful to Allah azza wa jal.
So that is why as we now go into this next part of the year, until next Ramadan and I ask Allah azza wa jal to grant us another Ramadan. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala not hold us accountable for our shortcomings, and as a result of our shortcomings, deprive us from another Ramadan.
Summary of Gratitude
So when it comes to gratitude in a nutshell, gratitude is done by the heart, by recognizing the blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Then gratitude is also done by the tongue, by saying, الحمد لله, doing the dhikr of Allah azza wa jal, reading the Quran. This is how we thank Allah, by using our tongue. And the third is by our actions, living by Islam, living by the Quran, living by the sunnah of Rasulullah ﷺ. This is how we show our gratitude through our actions.
I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to make us from amongst those who are grateful to Allah, who show our gratitude to Allah. And may Allah raise us amongst those people who are gonna be close to the anbiya, and the siddiqeen, and the shuhada, and the salihin on the day of judgment. Ameen rabb al-alameen.
Second Khutbah
A day of happiness, a day of joy. Let's remember our brothers and sisters all over the world who unfortunately have been separated from their families. There are so many people in Gaza today. There are so many people around the world, whether in Iran or in Gaza. Think about those children, those young girls who lost their lives as a result of these terrorist regimes, throwing bombs on these young innocent girls. Think about those parents that today they are spending Eid without their loved ones, without their kids, without their daughters. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bring relief to their hearts.
Celebrating Eid with Family
Brothers and sisters, thank Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for the family that you have. Today on the day of Eid, put aside your grudges. Put aside your grudges for the sake of Allah azza wa jal. On this day of Eid, spend time with your family. Take your family other places. So many times I've seen people take their families to different people's homes and everyone is sitting there so quiet, so boring, as if they are gathering to give their condolences because someone has passed away. Do not spend your Eid this way. Go out with your family. Spend on your family.
And I said this before, that, you know, give a gift and a toy to your child. One time a child went to his father and said, Imam Nadim said, you buy me a gift so I want an iPhone. No, I'm not saying that, okay? I'm not saying, children, I'm not saying that you go to your parents and say, you buy me an iPhone. I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is, that the parents can buy something that is decent within their financial capacity, within their financial means. But spend on your family, and spend time with your family, and have a good day.
And at the end of the day, when you spend all this good time, do not forget about Allah azza wa jal. Because wallahi, every single blessing that we have, it is only from Allah. And if Allah wants, He can take away from us in the blink of an eye. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala grant us tawfiq.
Final Du'as
May Allah accept our Ramadan. May Allah accept our du'as that we made in the month of Ramadan. May Allah accept our siyam. May Allah accept our qiyam. May Allah accept our tilawat. May Allah accept our adhkar. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala accept from every single Muslim around the world. And whether they're celebrating Eid on Friday or Saturday, it does not matter. We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to have mercy on the ummah of Rasulullah ﷺ.
Ameen rabb al-alameen.
Eid Mubarak
