Uthman's Generosity: Securing Jannah Through His Selfless Contributions

The Promises of Jannah to Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه

In this hadith, Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was mentioning three independent incidents in which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم promised him Jannah.

The first was the purchase of the well. The second was the purchase of the land adjacent to the masjid to expand the masjid. The third was the financing of the army in the Battle of Tabuk.

Regarding the well, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had announced:

Then, regarding the financing of the army:

After Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه gave such a large amount for the sake of Allah, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, as reported by Imam al-Tirmidhi:

(Jami' al-Tirmidhi — reported on the authority of Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه)

In other words, he had purchased his Jannah. So we see at least three independent incidents in which Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was guaranteed Jannah.

In a fourth incident — also reported in many of the books of hadith — Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari رضي الله عنه reports that he was with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and that he would be his gatekeeper that day. People started knocking on the door. First was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr — the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Allow him to come in and give him glad tidings of Jannah. Then came Sayyiduna Umar — the same. Allow him to come in and give him glad tidings of Jannah. Then came Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه — again the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Allow him to come in and give him glad tidings of Jannah,

So even in this instance, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم gave him glad tidings of Jannah. We see four independent incidents — and perhaps many more — in which Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was promised Jannah.

Five Defining Qualities of Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه

What I wanted to do in the few minutes that we have is reflect on a few of the qualities of Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه and how we can implement them in our lives.

1. Unbridled Generosity

The first quality that is evident from all of these incidents is that Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was characterized by unbridled generosity. And it is through this generosity perhaps that Allah gave him immense barakah in his wealth. It might be easy for us to say that he was able to give so much because he had so much. Well, perhaps he had so much because he was giving so much.

Through this generosity, on at least three or more occasions, he purchased his Jannah. A lesson that we can take from this is that whenever there is a call, a need for humanitarian help — be it helping the masjid — taking lesson from Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه, we can just try to give whatever we have. If we feel that we don't have that much, just give whatever you can. And inshallah Allah will put more barakah in our wealth. That is how Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was able to give again and again and again.

2. Immense Fear of Allah

The second characteristic of Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was his immense fear of Allah. It is reported that whenever he would stand by a grave, he would weep so excessively that his beard would become wet with tears. People would ask him why he weeps so much — in fact, he wept more at the sight of a grave than even at the mention of Jannah and Jahannam.

He would say that the grave is the first entry point. If a person's life in the grave is fine, then everything subsequently will also be fine. Whereas if a person's life in the grave is not good, then everything afterwards will be very difficult for him.

Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was promised Jannah on at least four occasions. In spite of that, his fear of Allah was immense. Those glad tidings of Jannah did not lead him to complacency — in fact, it increased his fear of Allah even more, and his appreciation and connection to Allah. He also had a very strong connection to the Qur'an, which further manifested his connection with Allah.

3. Patience in the Face of Trial

The third quality we see is that Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was subjected to immense disturbance, trial, and tribulation — perhaps more than any other Sahabi in his time. There was a propaganda campaign against him when he was Khalifa. It eventually led to the besieging of his house and to his own assassination. This was the first time in the history of Islam that a sword was drawn against another Muslim — and not just any Muslim, but rather the Khalifa of the time.

In spite of all of that, he remained immensely patient. He said: I will not fight these people because I do not want to be the first one to draw a sword against the Muslims. If they want to do it, let them do it. He recognized that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had given him glad tidings with the mention of a trial that would befall him, and he realized that he would have to undergo that trial in order to reach what was promised. So he remained very patient in spite of the difficulties he was facing.

For each and every one of us, we face our own trials in our own lives. There is a hadith in Sunan Abu Dawud:

Sometimes there is a very high station that is written for a believer that even surpasses his level of action. His good deeds are one thing, but the level of reward is far more than that. So Allah continues to subject him to trial and difficulty until he achieves that.

An ayah of the Qur'an that perhaps many of us are familiar with — Allah says:

That we will undoubtedly subject you to different forms of trial and difficulty — be it loss of life, loss of provision. And then Allah says at the end: Give glad tidings to those who are patient. Then He continues: Those that when calamity strikes… — Allah does not say if calamity strikes. So we understand that it is going to happen to each and every one of us at some time or another. We will have times where things are easy, and we will also have times where things are difficult.

Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه embodied that immense level of patience in spite of great difficulty. The very well that he purchased, the very land adjacent to the masjid that he purchased — he was being prevented from praying in it. But in spite of that, he remained patient and content with the decree of Allah.

4. Haya — Modesty and Bashfulness

The fourth quality — and perhaps what he is known most for — is his haya. Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was characterized amongst the Sahabah by immense haya. In a famous hadith reported by Musnad Ahmad and others, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

This quality of Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه is especially important for us in the time that we live in — where there is perhaps more immodesty than even many of us who were alive just twenty or thirty years ago know. Things have very swiftly deteriorated. People who were alive before the 1960s — you just look at pictures from the early twentieth century and you see that people were generally much more modest.

This immodesty has become dominant not just in the way people dress, but in the way that people speak, the references that they make, what people see on their screens, what we see on billboards. It is all around us. So more than any other time, this defining quality of Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه should be a lesson for all of us.

When we are driving and we see a billboard that is inappropriate — immediately we lower our gaze and ask Allah for forgiveness. If we are reading an article online and an immodest advertisement pops up — immediately we look away and ask Allah for forgiveness. If others are speaking and making lewd comments or remarks or anything that is inappropriate — immediately we desist and say: we cannot talk about this. We are Muslims. Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه was characterized by such defining modesty, such defining haya, that even the angels would have haya from him. This is something especially important for us in our time.

5. Maintaining the Rights of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and His Family

The last quality of Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه is that he was very distinguished in his maintenance of the rights of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and particularly the Ahlul Bayt — his family. Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه married not one but two of the daughters of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: Sayyidah Ruqayyah and Sayyidah Umm Kulthum رضي الله عنهما.

After the second one passed away, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said — in a hadith reported by al-Tabarani — that even if he had another daughter, and another one, he would have married them to Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه. Why? Because he was so distinguished in the way that he maintained the rights of the daughters of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.

Similarly, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has many rights upon us. We have to honor him. We should send salawat whenever his name is mentioned. Whenever anyone speaks about him in an inappropriate manner, we must immediately stand to his defense. We should do what we can to learn about his life. So we can also take lesson from Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه and maintain the rights of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in our own capacity.

Summary

Just to summarize — we talked about five defining qualities of Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه:

1. Unbridled generosity
2. Immense fear of Allah
3. Patience in the face of great trial
4. Haya — modesty and bashfulness
5. Maintenance of the rights of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم

We ask that Allah allow us to take lesson from this great Sahabi, Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه. We ask that Allah allow us to reflect on these qualities, particularly in this time of the year which marks the general time that he returned back to Allah. May Allah also allow us to do deeds that allow us entry into Jannah. May Allah allow us to purchase the pleasure of Allah and be with Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه and all the Sahabah and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in Jannah.
