Love for Imaan, Love for Allah

Allah says: rather, the effort you have to make is to develop love for Iman. And Allah will then beautify the things of Iman in your heart.

And I'll give you guys a small experience that all of us must have gone through.

My father, ever since we were growing up, we would go to grocery stores. He would take a detour of 50 minutes just to avoid the alcohol aisle. I'm sure many of you have done this too, just to avoid the alcohol.

All of us sitting here — all of us, I'm saying all of us sitting here — would feel the exact same way if we order Domino's Pizza. And we said, please, make sure it's halal-certified, you know, and the cutter is clean. And we're waiting for the pizza. Pizza shows up, the butter is still on the table, we open the box and we see pepperoni on it. All of us would have the same reaction — we'd be disgusted by it, correct? We'd get mad.

I mean, it happens at Taco Bell once a month. Beans only — replace the beef with the beans. You go, you're all excited, you open it, it's beef in there. You feel disgusted, right? Where did that come from? That came from Allah. That came from Allah — that you and I, we already feel that emotion with certain sins. We already feel it. We don't like to go in the alcohol aisle.

Some people feel that about smoke, cigarettes, vape. I crossed the border four times to Windsor in the last six days, this last Saturday. Every single time I crossed, they asked me the regular questions, but this time they asked me, "Do you have any cannabis?" First time I said no, second time I said no. The third time I crossed, they asked me, "Do you have any cannabis?" So I looked at the person and I said, "Look, if you ask me do I have any guns, money, anything else like that, I understand. But if you see a person with a turban and a beard, don't ask me if he has cannabis. That's disrespectful. Don't ask me if I have weed — I don't. You can ask other questions, no problem."

Just the thought of it — him asking me, a person who doesn't smoke — just the thought of it becomes disgusting. You feel this karaha. The same Allah that put that in our hearts for pork, for alcohol — that list can be bigger if we make the effort.

Allah Places Karaha in Our Hearts

Now Allah will put karaha — disgust — in our hearts for speaking rudely. He'll put it in our hearts for talking down upon somebody. He will put it in our hearts one by one, and our hearts will automatically get disgusted by those things. And He will replace it with love for the things of Iman.

Today, it's hard to forgive and it's easy to hold a grudge. But Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I enjoy forgiving so much that I am afraid Allah will not reward me for it, because it is so easy for me."

It doesn't happen overnight. Allah starts putting love in your heart for these things one after the other. Then they become easy. Because if you start loving something, it is easy to do. You don't need motivation. You don't need a five-day knowledge retreat for it. Once you start loving it, it's easy to do it.
