As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. Bismillah, alhamdulillah, wa salatu wa salamu ala rasoolillah.
If you are here, that means Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has answered the dua we made last week. Allahumma ballighna ramadhan. So now we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, Allahumma ballighna laylatul qadr. Allahumma a'tiqriqabana min al-nar. Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka anta al-samee'u al-'aleem. Ask Allah azza wa jalla to accept from us and give us the energy to do as much deeds as we can to please Him. Ameen Ya Rabb al-alameen.
Masjid Support Campaign
Every Ramadan we stay quiet for the whole year, but in Ramadan we go back and ask you to help us in the operation of the masjid. So we rejuvenate the campaign of the 313 where we ask people to give us a recurring amount per month. So I'm going to ask you for the khutbah for a few people inshallah ta'ala or as many people as possible in this blessed month to participate in running the house of Allah azza wa jalla.
You all know this masjid produces huffaz. This masjid helps the needy. This masjid provides pantry for the non-Muslims. This masjid provides medical care. You name it. Alhamdulillah Rabb al-alameen. And at the same time, this masjid is being attacked day and night. So defending this masjid is an act of worship. Defending the house of Allah subhana wa ta'ala. So may Allah protect us Ya Rabb al-alameen and we need your support inshallah.
Think about it this way. This is the house of Allah subhana wa ta'ala. If we do not support it, who's going to support it? We all know that in our countries usually the masjids are run by the Awqaf. But here it's only us. We are the only ones who run the masjid and run the operation of the masjid.
I don't want you to feel like you come to the masjid and you enjoy all this electricity and all this cleanliness and all this security and you think it's for free. It's costing someone. Someone has to pay for this. If you can afford it, then you have to. If you cannot, wallahi, come to us and we will support you. But if you can, make sure you do not let this opportunity go. Because, to be honest with you, you will be questioned. I sent you a guy to ask you to help my house and you were able to and you did not give anything.
Wallahi, this is an honor. An honor. Because we all know that Allah does not need me, nor you, to support his house. So this is an honor to be able to support the house of Allah. May Allah bless you. May Allah protect you. May Allah increase you. Jazakallah khair.
The Wealthiest Person: Understanding Rida
Whomsoever is wealthy in his heart, he will not be harmed no matter what happened in the dunya. And whomsoever is poor in his heart, he will never be satisfied no matter how much he has.
Our topic today, ya ikhwan, is Rida. Rida, the closest translation is to be pleased with whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala decreed. As a matter of fact, Rasulallah ﷺ, he told us:
Be satisfied, be content with what Allah has decreed for you, you will be the richest of people. You will be the richest of people. You're rich, you're poor, you're sick, you're healthy, you have autistic child, you have no child, alhamdulillah. I am content with whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has decreed.
The pleasure of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the ultimate goal of every true believer. My brothers and sisters, Allah told us in the Qur'an:
And the pleasure of Allah, for Allah to be pleased with you, that is the greatest success ever.
What is the Definition of Rida?
There are so many definitions, but I love this simple definition. It says:
The tranquility of the heart to what Allah has chosen. The tranquility of the heart to what Allah has chosen.
Misconceptions About Rida
There are some misconceptions about Rida. People think that Rida means I am sick, I have to accept it. That's it, this is what Rida is. No, Rida is not about giving up. Rida is about exhausting all the efforts. Exhausting all the efforts and all the means, and being content with the outcome. After I have exhausted all the efforts, all the means, now I am content with the outcome, that is Rida.
No, I lost my business, I lost my health, that's it, what can I do? No, this is not Rida. You have no other choice. Rida is after you have done everything possible, and then you are content with what happened, that is Rida.
So if you cannot have children, and you tried everywhere to have a child, and Allah decreed you not have children, Alhamdulillah. You have chronic back pain, and you went to every single chiropractor, every doctor, every medicine, you tried everything, and it did not work, Alhamdulillah, I am content with what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala have decreed.
Al-Husayn ibn Ali radiyallahu anhuma he said: Whomsoever put his trust in Allah's choice, will not wish for anything except Allah's choice. Whomsoever put his trust in Allah's choice, he will not be happy with anything except Allah's choice.
How to Attain Rida?
Number one: Knowledge. Let me explain it in an example. An old man with a heart problem, he went to the dentist. And the dentist told him, "We cannot use anesthesia because it will affect your heart. So we are going to do the dentist work without anesthesia." Now, the man knowing that this information is coming from a trusted source, from a knowledgeable source, he is accepting the consequences. Even though he will be in so much pain, but because the one who told him, "this will be very dangerous," he is a trusted person. And he knows that the other choice is worse.
So knowledge of who is Allah Azza wa Jal, will make me earn and attain the Rida. The one who is running my affairs, is the one who loves me more than my own mother. The one who is running my affairs, is the one who knows the unseen. The one who is running my all affairs, is the all knowledgeable, the all expert, the all wise, Al-Hakeem. Is it possible by any means, that my tadbeer, my plan to my life, is better than Allah's plan? It's impossible, ya ikhwan, impossible.
My brothers and sisters, you will attain the Rida, knowing that Rasulullah ﷺ told us: you will not die, until you get what Allah has decreed for you. Any Rizq that Allah decreed for you, you will not die before you attain it, before you get it. Whether it's children, it's a house, it's richness, it's money, whatever it is, you will not die. Knowing that, so subhanAllah, I have to be satisfied, I have to be content, with whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala decreed.
Knowing that, Rasulullah ﷺ told us: whatever is with Allah, cannot be earned by disobeying Him. I'm gonna repeat this, because this is a profound statement. To attain Rida, I have to know that Rasulullah ﷺ said: whatever is with Allah, will never be earned by disobeying Allah.
So for the brothers who own hookah shop, and smoke shop, and liquor stores, and 7-Elevens and all that, you're trying to get the Rizq that has already been decreed for you. It is there for you. You are just earning it through haram means, it is there. You decided to get it through haram, it was coming anyway. You decided to get it through the haram path, but it was coming anyway. That was your Rizq, determined for you. It will not change. How do I earn it? It depends on me. Either through halal means, through haram means, I got a gift, I inherited, but it's the same amount. I decided to get it through haram. And whatever is with Allah, cannot be earned by disobeying Him.
Understanding the Insignificance of This Dunya
We attain Rida by knowing how insignificant is this dunya. The owner of this dunya, told us that it's worthless.
It's like, nothing that you have, nothing, nothing. It's all just amusement and fun for a short period of time. And what Allah has, is not only better, it's also everlasting. No matter what we have here, the joy is temporary. You got a new phone, a new house, new car, new whatever it is. One week, two weeks, you're done. But the joy of the akhira is everlasting.
And Allah ended the ayah with a striking statement. Don't you comprehend, don't you use your aql. I am, I own both. I'm telling you this is worthless, and this is forever joy. And you are insisting, I want this. Ya habibi, I own both. This is worthless. Knowing that will give me the rida.
Now, we beg Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, and we ask him to make us from the people who are pleased with whatever he decreed.
Second Khutbah
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى مَنْ لَا نَبِيَّ بَعْدَهُ
Seven, eight, nine hundred people in this room, if I get a piece of paper and give a pen to everybody and say, brothers and sisters, write down all your problems on a piece of paper, and then we pass a box and we say, throw your problems, throw that paper in that box, but do not write the name. Everybody, write down your problems on the piece of paper, and throw that paper in the box.
We shuffled the whole box. And then we pass the box again, and we say, now, my dear brothers and sisters, whatever paper you pick, these are your new problems. You pick the first one, Astaghfirullah, audhubillah. You pick the second one, no way. Every single one of this room, he would say, please give me my paper back. Give me my paper back!
If Allah gave me and you the power to see the unseen, we will only choose this life. Why? Because the one who chose this life is the one who knows that. If I tell you, brothers, I know the unseen. So please, when you leave, don't go right on 14th street, you're gonna have an accident. Make a left.
Divine Wisdom and Contentment
You will all say, of course, He knows the unseen. Allah, I don't know nothing. The one who knows the unseen is only one. And He loves me and you more than our own mothers. So whatever He plans for us, that's the best plan.
My brothers and sisters, remember, not to complain about the All-Merciful to the one who has no mercy. We sometimes complain about أَرْحَمِ الرَّاحِمِينَ to the person who has no رَحْمَة. How? How? How?
Beautiful Du'as from the Prophet
My brothers and sisters, Rasulullah ﷺ taught us a very beautiful du'a. I wish you could all memorize it.
"O Allah, I ask you for a tranquil soul that believes that one day it's going to meet you, and accepts whatever you decreed, and تَرْضَى بِقَضَائِكَ - and pleased with whatever you have decreed." SubhanAllah.
And Rasulullah ﷺ told us:
"O Allah, I seek refuge with you from a heart that does not have khushu', from a du'a that is not answered, and from a soul that is never satisfied, and from unbeneficial knowledge."
The Grass is Always Greener
My brothers and sisters, the single wishes to get married, and the married is contemplating divorce. The young wants to grow old, and the old wants youth to return. The poor wants to become rich, and the rich wishes for the peace they spent their life chasing. The unknown craves fame, and the famous craves privacy.
It's always greener on the other side. It's always greener on the other side. The fact is that no one has it all, but everyone has enough. No one has it all, but everyone has just enough.
Look around you, and take a moment to appreciate the blessings that Allah has blessed you with. Wallahi, it will blow your mind when you recognize just that the khutbah before this, we prayed janazah on a sister. And last week, before Ramadan starts, we prayed five, six janazahs.
The Gift of Witnessing Ramadan
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala took the souls of these people, and kept me and you to witness Ramadan. Wallahi, that's a favor that we have to be in sujood to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala all day and all night, to say, thank you, ya Allah. You kept me alive to witness Ramadan.
Do you know what does that mean? When I and you are alive to witness Ramadan, that means we are given a new opportunity for the neck to be saved from the hellfire, for all our sins to be forgiven, for us to witness an extra Laylat al-Qadr. Do you know how precious it is that you are still on earth in this month?
My brothers and sisters, be content with whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has decreed for you. You will be the richest, the wealthiest man on this planet.
