4 Reasons Why The 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah Are So Special
The Sacred Months
But four months Allah says are sacred and then He gives us a commandment. What do you do when you reach Dhul-Qi'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram? Complete the ayah. Do not wrong yourself in these four months.
Do you know what that means? The Prophet ﷺ informed us — in these four months your sins are multiplied. If you commit sins in these four months, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala multiplies your sins. Magnifies them.
He does not do that any other time of the year. Just like if somebody kills someone in the Haram — if somebody goes to the Ka'bah and they kill someone there, is that the same as killing someone here on Old Hole Lane? Is it the same sin in the sight of Allah? No. Because he kills someone in a holy place, a sacred place, a place of the Prophets, so the sin there is multiplied.
Similarly, just as there are sacred places, there are also sacred times.
The Four Reasons
Reason 1: The Month of Hajj
The first reason Dhul-Hijjah is special — it is the month of Hajj.
Reason 2: A Sacred Month — Deeds Are Multiplied
The second reason — it is a sacred month in which sins are multiplied and good deeds are also multiplied. It's like a sale on good deeds. Your good deeds are multiplied, your sins are also multiplied.
Reason 3: The End of the Islamic Year
The third thing about Dhul-Hijjah — it is the last month of the Islamic calendar. What happens on New Year's Eve in this country and in most countries of the world? What do they do on New Year's Eve? They celebrate with fireworks. What else do people do on New Year's Eve? They make something starting with R. They make resolutions.
What's a resolution? They decide what they want to do next year. Dhul-Hijjah is our end of the year. It is the end of a year and the start of a new page.
Dhul-Hijjah is the month we have to sit and think — in the last 12 months, what did I do with my life? Am I the same person as I was last year? This is the month. This is our New Year. It's coming close to our New Year's.
Reason 4: The Day of Sacrifice
And there is a fourth thing that makes this month special — the day of sacrifice, which we call Qurbani. This day, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala made a day of celebration — not just for the Muslims, but for the Jews and the Christians as well before us. The Jews, they celebrate Yom Kippur, the day of sacrifice. The Christians also, before their religion was edited and subtracted from, they would celebrate a day of sacrifice.
This is what makes these 10 days very special. Four things.
Summary of the Four Reasons
Who can tell me the four things?
- Number one — Hajj: it is the month of Hajj.
- Number two — it is a sacred month in which sins and good deeds are multiplied.
- Number three — it is the end of the Islamic year, a time for reflection and renewal.
- Number four — it contains the Day of Sacrifice (Qurbani).
The day of sacrifice. I'm going to talk about this shortly.
