An Insult to Tawakkul

Many times Muslims, we say tawakkal 'ala Allah — we just trust Allah. This means, in plain English, we're going to do something with no planning.

You park the car in double yellow lines. You say, brother, double yellow lines — tawakkal 'ala Allah. No brother, this is not tawakkal 'ala Allah, parking in double yellow lines.

You wake up, you say, brother, maybe you should apply for a job. No, tawakkal 'ala Allah. Oh, the bird's gonna come and drop the money on the doorstep.

This idea of tawakkal 'ala Allah — this is an abuse of tawakkul. It's an insult to this word.

What Tawakkul Actually Means

Tawakkul is to take all of the means, to plan, to strategize — and then you say, now I trust Allah. Not to sit back and do nothing.
