How Are We Going To Apply This In Ramadan?
When the Prophet would teach the Quran to his companions, he would only teach them 10 ayahs at a time until they understood it and they acted on it. Then he would say come back. I'll give you 10 more. You didn't act on it. Don't come to me. This is how you teach them Quran.
Guess how long did it take Umar ibn al-Khattab to memorize Surah Al-Baqarah? 10 years. 10 years. He could have memorized it in 10 days. It took him 10 years. Why? Because he wanted to apply every ayah in his life before he memorized the next one.
The ethos of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions was not speed of completion. It was deep understanding of the revelation and application in their lives.
How Are We Going to Apply This?
How many people are going to recite the entire Quran in Ramadan? You ask them: What does اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ mean? I don't know.
Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه said:
"For me to recite Surah Az-Zalzalah and Al-Qari'ah while thinking about their meanings is more beloved to me than to recite Al-Baqarah and Aali 'Imran without any contemplation."
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه said: Stop chanting the Quran quickly like it's poetry. It's not a rap. Why are we so rushed? Stop scattering the Quran.
So How Should We Recite?
He tells us: Stop at its wonders. Let it move your heart. Stop worrying about when am I going to finish this page? When am I going to finish this surah? Why are you in a rush?
