Summary
How to Converse with Allah?
- Exploring the true nature of Du'a.
- Is Du'a merely a transaction or something deeper?
- Understanding sincere communication with the Divine.
Prophet Zakariya's Supplication
- A powerful example of conversing with Allah.
- Prophet Zakariya (عليه السلام) speaks to Allah in a moment of vulnerability.
- His situation: old age, weak bones, and a barren wife.
Zakariya's Heartfelt Plea (Arabic)
- Reflect on the original words of Prophet Zakariya's Du'a.
Zakariya's Heartfelt Plea (Translation)
- My bones are weak, my hair is grey, yet I won't give up on speaking to You.
- Fear of no one to carry on my legacy after me.
- Despite my wife being barren, I still ask You for a child.
- A child who inherits my legacy and that of Yaqub, and is pleasing to You.
Du'a: Not a Script, But a Breakdown
- Zakariya's du'a was not a pre-written formula.
- It was a raw, unfiltered expression of his heart's deepest desires.
- He 'broke down' his entire situation in front of Allah.
- Expressing desperation, vulnerability, and unwavering hope.
How to Converse with Allah?
How do we converse with Allah? If du'a is not a transaction, then what is it?
Zakariya عليه السلام is speaking to Allah:
"Oh Allah, my bones are weak, my hair is grey, but I'm not going to give up on speaking to You. I'm scared there'll be no one after me to pick up my legacy. My wife can't even bear children. But even though it's impossible, I'm still going to ask You to gift me a child. Someone who inherits my legacy — not just any child. Someone who inherits from me and the legacy of Yaqub. Make this child pleasing to me."
It's not a script. It's just broken down in front of Allah.
The way you speak to Allah when you are broken down, when you are desperate, when you are raw and unfiltered — that du'a, believe me, breaks through the ceiling, breaks through the ozone layer, and it reaches the Almighty because of the depth of certainty and sincerity with which you said it.
