How we are really commanded to spend

One day someone came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and asked him, "I need something. Just give me anything from what you have." And on that day, he said:

ما عندي شيء

"Today I have nothing." But then he said:

وَلَكِنِ ابْدَأْ عَلَيَّ

"But come, let us sell something that I have. Somebody comes and buys something that I'm selling — we can share it between us."

So Umar ibn al-Khattab said to the Prophet, "O Prophet of Allah, why are you doing something Allah did not oblige you to do? Allah didn't tell you — if somebody asks you, sell the stuff that you have at home and give them. Allah said: give if you have; if you don't have, leave it."

Then one of the Ansar said to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم:

أَنْفِقْ وَلَا تَخْشَ مِنْ ذِي الْعَرْشِ إِقْلَالَا

"Spend what you have, and do not be scared that Allah is going to bankrupt you. He is going to provide for you."

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم smiled — until his molar teeth could be seen — this beaming smile that would light up Medina. Then he said:

بِهَذَا أُمِرْتُ

"This is what Allah asked me to do."
