Learn The Meanings Of The Qur'an This Ramadan

In Ramadan, those of you who have never thought about the meanings of the Qur'an, have never reflected upon the meanings of the Qur'an, learned the meanings of the Qur'an — this Ramadan, you begin your journey. From:

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ

If you are non-Arab, read a good translation. I recommend two translations for you:

Muhammad Abdel Halim's translation, The Glorious Qur'an. Mustafa Khattab's translation, The Clear Qur'an. Easy translation.

Read the translation, start from قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ. And you want to recite? Recite as well. It's not either this or this — do both. You want to memorize? Memorize as well.

But do not leave the reflection on the meanings, and do not leave the application in your day to day. Those of you who speak Arabic, read a small Mukhtasar Tafseer of the Qur'an. Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer — the explanation of the Qur'an is on the margins.

Understanding Over Quantity

Even if you read less Qur'an this Ramadan, make sure you understand more of it. If you don't do a Khatma, nothing is going to happen to you. But if you don't understand the Qur'an, you are finished and your life is finished.

Allah destroyed the Muslims, criticized them, scolded them. Why? Not because of not recitation. Because of no understanding and no Amal.

So this Ramadan, from today, make sure you start to understand and act on the Qur'an. You want to do Khatma? Marhaba. Do Khatma with the translation. Raise your ambitions. But if you have to choose, make sure there is no Surah of the Qur'an you read, except you also try to understand it.

Set Three Goals

Have a recitation goal and a reflection goal, and a goal of actions. In the end of Ramadan, you should have a list of things in your life you want to change because the Qur'an told you to change. That addiction you want to leave, that anger problem, the way you treat your spouse, the way you parent your children. "I'm going to do this, this, this."

Why? "I read it in the Qur'an. I'm going to change my life." This is the most beloved to Allah — the action based on the Qur'an.

Two Types of Surahs to Start With

There are two types of Surahs. If you want to start today, it's very easy for you to understand and action these Surahs.

1. The Short Surahs

Beautiful, short, easy to understand, easy to apply.

2. The Surahs Based on Stories

Like which Surah, for example? Surah Al-Kahf. Like which Surah, for example? Surah Yusuf. Like which Surah, for example? Surah Bani Isra'il. Surah Al-Baqarah. Surah Ya-Sin. Surah Ta-Ha. Surah Al-Qasas.

These are stories. You know a story? Our kids read bedtime stories. You can understand that, and you can apply that in your life.

Reflect on the Story of Yusuf

You think carefully about the stories of the Qur'an. You look at Yusuf in the well. Yusuf in the palace. How does he behave with women? How does he deal with tests? How does he deal with his brothers? Isn't there so many things we can learn from the story? 100%.

We can change our whole life — just Surah Yusuf is enough to change our life. That's it. Spend some time in Surah Yusuf.
