A Du'a Worth Its Weight in Gold

This du'a, the Prophet ﷺ is teaching her, is worth its weight in gold.

(Sahih Muslim, Book 48, Hadith 61)

The Meaning of the Du'a

Allahumma Rabbal Samawatis Sab' — O Allah, Lord of the Seven Heavens.
Wa Rabbal Arshil Kareem il-Azeem — and You are the Lord of the Glorious, Magnificent Throne.
Rabbana wa Rabba Kulli Shayy — You are our Master and our Nurturer, and You are the Master of Everything.
Munazzilat Tawrati wal Injeel wal Furqan — You sent down the Torah, and the Injeel, and the Qur'an.
Faliqal Habbi wan Nawa — You split the small seeds when they grow.
A'udhu Bika Min Sharri Kulli Shay'in Anta Akhidhun Binasiyatih — O Allah, protect me from every evil that You are in control of.
Anta al-Awwalu falaysa qablaka shayy — O Allah, You are the First; there was nothing before You.
Wa anta al-Akhiru falaysa ba'daka shayy — and You are the Last; there is nothing after You.
Wa anta al-Zahiru falaysa fawqaka shayy — and You are the Dominant; nobody can overpower You.
Wa anta al-Batinu falaysa doonaka shayy — and You are the Closest; there is no one closer than You.
Iqdi 'annad dayna wa aghnina minal faqr — O Allah, relieve us of our debts and save us from poverty.

The Structure of This Du'a

I want you to remember and think about this du'a. 90% of this du'a is what? It's the praise of Allah. And how much of the du'a is actually making the request? It's five words at the end. Five lines in the praise of Allah and five words making the request — this is how du'a should be.

The Lesson Behind the Du'a

He teaches her this du'a, and what is he saying to his daughter? You have a problem of being poor, you can't afford a servant — don't take the shortcut by coming to me, don't take the shortcut because I'm related to you, saying I'm going to give you the servant, no. Do it the hard way: beg Allah for it, and Allah will give you better than you can ever imagine.
