The Key To Being The Richest of People
The Prophet ﷺ says:
You want to be the richest of people? Be content with whatever Allah gave you.
One of the beautiful ways he expressed this is in a hadith where he says to Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما:
(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 2669; also reported in Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2516)
"Remember, young boy — what hit you was never meant to miss you. What missed you was never meant to strike you. And know that victory comes with patience, relief comes with hardship, and that with difficulty comes ease."
Contentment Is Not Passivity
The Prophet ﷺ would train his companions so much on this idea of rida — of contentment. But contentment doesn't mean that a person should be passive. Not interested, not active, not trying. No. Contentment is: you tried your best, you exhausted yourself. You want ihsan — the best of the best — in everything that you do. And yet, whatever Allah gives me, I'm happy.
The Example of Musa ﷺ
Remember Musa ﷺ entering Madyan, running away from Egypt. And as he enters Madyan, he raises his hands to Allah and he says:
"Whatever you give me, I'll be content with it. I am in need of it."
The Example of Hajar ﷺ
Think of Hajar ﷺ, the wife of Ibrahim. When he leaves her in the desert with his son Ismail, he's walking off into the desert and she says: "Why did you leave us here?" Yet she too embodied that spirit of trust and contentment in what Allah decrees — turning to Him and relying upon Him fully, just as Musa ﷺ declared:
