One of the most beautiful hadith — the Prophet ﷺ asked one of his companions, "Ask me whatever you wish." This companion says, "I ask you to make me your companion in paradise." The Prophet ﷺ says, "Okay, I can guarantee for you, but one condition — I'm going to ask you only to do one thing: never ask anybody for anything, never depend on anyone for anything, try to depend on yourself."

(Sahih Muslim, Book 2, Hadith 489 — on the authority of Thawban, and related narrations in Sahih Muslim, Book 5, Hadith 2097, on the authority of 'Awf ibn Malik)

One day, one of the Prophet's ﷺ companions came to him and asked him, "How much money should I give in charity from my inheritance?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Give a third maximum." And then he says something very interesting: "For you to leave your children wealthy is better than for you to leave them as dependents, constantly asking people for money. Don't do that — leave your children more wealthy than you are." Why? So they are independent.

This is something the Prophet ﷺ would actively encourage — not being needy, not being dependent on others, but rather trying to stand up to your own affairs and look after yourself.
