You feel guilty, you feel like you've lost the way, you took the wrong turn, you want to make a u-turn, you want to come back — just pray two rakahs. Pray two rakahs, center yourself once more. There is nothing in my life, no priority, no person greater for me than the Almighty.
The Dialogue of Salah
All gratitude to my Master, Lord of the Worlds. Allah responds to you in Salah:
"My slave praised Me."
Allah responds straight away: "My slave glorified Me."
Allah responds straight away: "My slave has magnified Me."
(Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 775)
Allah is talking to you. This is a dialogue.
The Most Powerful Request
"O Allah, I may have been far, I may have lost the way, I may have committed all the sins under the planet, but You are the only one I would worship and seek for help."
Help me. And Allah responds to every one of us — every time we recite this ayah, Allah says: "My slave has humbled himself in front of Me. Let him ask, and I will give."
You can ask Allah for anything on this earth, from a Maserati all the way to a cup of ice cream. But in this moment, you choose to ask Allah for only one thing:
"O Allah, just show me the way back to You. I don't want anything else. Everything else I can sort out. But if I'm far from You, I'm lost. Just show me the way, redirect me, bring me back to You."
"The path of those prophets before you. Not those who have angered You, nor those who have gone astray."
Allah says: "My slave asked Me. Of course, I'm going to show him the way. Come back to Me. Let Me show you the signs. Let Me make you return."
And you say: اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ — Allahu Akbar.
