The Prayer Like You've Never Felt Before
The Bow — Rukū'
You bow even though you don't bow in any moment in your life — not to your manager, not to your boss, certainly not to your spouse — and you stood there bowing because you are stood in front of the highest power there is. Your head is lowered as if to say, O Allah, You command and I obey. And you say in this bowing:
He is so great that He would overlook all of my deeds, all of my mistakes, all of my flaws — how great can He be?
And then you stand up and you say:
And then you stand there praising Him so He can listen. I am praising You.
Never in this Salah do you look up. Your face, your eyes, constantly trained on the ground — because you are not stood in front of an equal. You don't need to make eye-to-eye contact. You are stood in front of the greatest.
The Pinnacle — Sujūd
And then this is the greatest moment — the pinnacle of Salah, the moment of climax where it all comes together — when you put your forehead on the ground. This is the moment that you find the closest you will ever be to Allah.
You might be on a motorway and your head is on the tarmac. In a library at university and your head is on the carpet which hasn't been cleaned for a few months. You might be in a corridor somewhere. You might be on a wooden plank on a pier somewhere by the sea. You could be anywhere. The Prophet ﷺ said:
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 335; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 521) — "The whole earth has been made a place of prostration and a means of purification for me."
It doesn't matter what soil is touching your forehead — the brand of sand, the type of weeds, the cement, the tarmac. In this moment, all of us feel the same sensation. We are charging. We are reconnecting with the place we came from. The sand on the ground, this tarmac, this mud — this is who we are. We are mud.
"We created the human being from clay, from mud." And now this mud is touching the mud. This is the moment of connection — the moment in which we remember what matters most.
And in this moment, as you are at the lowest point you could ever be, you say:
I am the lowest — and He is the highest.
The Anchor
And it is in this moment — this moment of sujood — this moment where your head connects with the ground — you realize something: you have just anchored yourself.
