We have to overcome this!

You know, somebody last week — I told them to come with me tomorrow to this place for a course. Where is the course? I said it's in Leeds. Oh SubhanAllah, I have to take a train? Ah, you have to take a train. What's gonna happen on the train, Yabash? Are there thieves on the train? Are you going to be robbed? You're going to be stabbed? Please tell me.

What's gonna happen on the train? Oh, you know so many unexpected things — the train might stop, you know, the conductors, the strikes. So you're not willing to jump into that little bit of uncertainty to get knowledge? I'll write on a piece of paper: you will never get ilm, Habibi, this way. You're not willing to take a risk? Just sit at home.

Knowledge Requires Sacrifice

Imam Muslim in his Sahih — Sahih Muslim — the famous hadith collection. He was writing a hadith, writing a hadith, and he got tired, and he wrote a sentence to motivate himself:

لا يُنَالُ العِلْمُ بِرَاحَةِ الجَسَدِ

"You can never attain knowledge by relaxing."

You have to get up, you have to sweat, you have to tear, you have to bleed. If you want something that's valuable, Imam al-Shafi'i says in his famous poetry:

تَرُومُ العِزَّةَ ثُمَّ تَنَامُ لَيْلاً
يَغُوصُ البَحْرَ مَن طَلَبَ اللَّآلِي

"You want something great, but you want to sleep all night? Don't you see — if somebody wants a pearl, where do they have to go? They have to dive deep into the sea."

You have to hold your breath for 11 minutes. If you want any pearl in this world — whether that pearl is a righteous spouse, whether that pearl is a job opportunity, whether that pearl is ilm, knowledge that will benefit you — you have to drown, jump, sink, hold your breath, sweat if you want what is great.
