What Does It Mean When We Say Allah Is The Anchor In The Storm?

What does it mean when I say that Allah is the anchor in every storm? Let me give you the scenario. You just started a business. You pulled out all your life savings and you put it into this business.

Not a smart decision, but let's say you did it. You made a huge loss. In fact, you lost everything.

In fact, you borrowed money from your uncles, aunties and cousins and put it into this business and you lost that as well. You're sat there, head in hands, full of debt. I don't know where to go.

You're in a storm. And in that storm, your day moves so quickly. You think, if I need to earn this money back, I need to hustle.

That's what the YouTubers keep telling me. Hustle, hustle, move quick, buy, sell, go and do this, make contacts, network, blah, blah, blah. Salah time comes.

You think, this is coming in the way of my hustle. Move this Salah aside. Hustle, hustle, hustle, hustle.

Only the Arabs get the joke. It's okay. Most good jokes are like that.

Come to the end of the day and you didn't achieve anything. Sometimes we think in our haste, in a rush — the last thing on our mind is our Salah, our connection with Allah.

We feel like it's coming in the way. We think if we do more, we will gain more, but actually we end up gaining less. Sometimes to speed up, you have to slow down.

The Storms We Face

You're in the storm. You've lost a loved one. You're sat in the hospital. You're at your mom's janazah. You're about to enter into divorce proceedings. You're struggling to find a job.

You're struggling. You're in a storm. You're in a bad place, a dark place.

Salah Is Your Anchor

This is the moment. Rather than doing more of the stuff you think will help you get there — stop and pray your Salah. Because when you stand up to pray your Salah, you will suddenly start to feel anchored in something.

Salah is your anchor in the storm. Salah is your shade on a hot day. Salah is your peace in a stressful moment.

This is why the very next ayah, after Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ, Muhammad ﷺ — stay straight, don't be distracted by those people around you — and then Allah says: what is going to anchor you in that moment, make you find peace, make you find your center, centralize you in who you are and where you are going? It is to stand in front of Me and establish your prayer.
