Ramadan: The Month Of Relief — Episode 2: Battle of Badr
Speaker: Mufti Abdul Wahab Waheed
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ — As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Dear brothers and sisters, welcome back to this short series that we are having in the month of Ramadan and how we are explaining that the month of Ramadan has always been a source of peace, relief and victory for the Muslims all across the world and throughout all times and eras.
The Battle of Badr: A Victory in Ramadan
In this week's episode we will be speaking about the second event which displays and manifests this beautiful quality of relief and victory for the Muslims. The first challenge which took place against the Muslims in the blessed city of Medina was through the Battle of Badr. The Prophet (SAW), with 313 strong men from the believers — strong internally of Iman but very weak in their equipment, very weak in their bodies and strength physically — came against the force of a thousand people from Mecca, from the Mushrikun of Mecca.
This event took place in the month of Ramadan, and Allah (SAW) manifested and displayed His victory for the Muslims and how He defeated the non-believers of Mecca within the month of Ramadan — through the help of angels and through the du'a of the Prophet (SAW) that he made all night, asking Allah to help the believers against the Mushrikun of Mecca. This event took place on the 17th night of the month of Ramadan, once again displaying to us that the month of Ramadan, within its very fabric, there is relief and there is peace for Muslims.
Our Personal Battle Against the Nafs
Dear brothers and sisters, each and every one of us are fighting against our nafs and we have a battle against our habits. Let it be that in this month of Ramadan we are able to — through the help of Allah and the du'as that we make at night, in the Taraweeh that we pray, in the tilawat that we make — become victorious over the negative habits that we have in our life.
This will happen once we are able to, firstly, identify those habits, and secondly, continue filling our lives — in our days and nights — with a'mal. Those a'mal will take the place of those negative habits. And the month of Ramadan will also serve as a source of relief, peace and victory for our own lives, in our own families and against our own nafs, insha'Allah wa ta'ala.
