Ramadan: The Month of Relief — Episode 3 | The Innocence of Aisha (RA)

Dear brothers and sisters, welcome back to the third episode of this short series in the month of Ramadan that we are having — Ramadan, the month of relief; Ramadan, the month of peace; Ramadan, the month of victory for Muslims all across the world.

In this episode we'll be speaking about a very specific event that took place at the time of the Prophet SAW with one of his beloved and blessed wives — perhaps one of the most beloved wives that he had — where Amr ibn Aas RA asked the Prophet SAW:

"Who is the most beloved of all people to you?"

And the Prophet SAW replied and responded by saying: A'isha RA.

The Event of Ifk — The False Accusation

This event takes place when the Prophet SAW went on a journey with his blessed companions, and accompanying him was one of the mothers of the believers, A'isha RA. It is a very lengthy narration, but to summarize it and put it into a nutshell: the caravan went ahead and A'isha RA was left behind after relieving herself. Then Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal RA came and they made their way back to Madinah — both of them chaste, both of them clean and pure-hearted, with nothing but innocence in the hearts of either of those blessed companions.

But when they did get back, the whispers of the munafiqun — those hypocrites who had issues — they started saying: "Look, the wife of the Prophet SAW has done the unspeakable act," accusing her and slandering her of such a filthy thing.

And A'isha RA — pure in every aspect of her life — was unaware of what was happening. She goes to her parents' house, and one of the women of the household tells her: "Do you not know what these people are saying about you?" When she is informed about this filthy accusation, she falls sick and starts crying.

The Prophet's Words to A'isha

One day the Prophet SAW comes and meets her in the house of her parents. He says to her: "O A'isha, if you are innocent, then verily I know that Allah will declare your innocence. And if you have committed such an act, then ask Allah for forgiveness and He will forgive you."

A'isha RA, hearing this from the Prophet SAW, looks at her father and says: "Do you have something to say on my behalf and back me up?" The father looks down and says: "O my daughter, what can I say in front of the Prophet SAW?" She looks at her mother, and the mother also has nothing to add.

A'isha's Response — Patience Like Ya'qub

And A'isha RA tells the Prophet SAW: "If I say I am innocent, you will believe me, and if I say I am not innocent, you will also believe me — but at the end of the day we will have to wait for Wahi to descend."

"So I will say what Ya'qub AS said when his children took away Yusuf from him:"

"So (for me) patience is most fitting."

فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ، فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ، فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ. And then instantly, Allah sent down the beautiful verses of Surah An-Nur.

The Divine Declaration of Innocence

"Indeed, those who came with the falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what he earned of the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof — for him is a great punishment."

And Allah utilized an entire passage of this surah to declare the innocence of our mother A'isha RA. So no mouth and no tongue in this world can ever raise itself again and cast doubt upon our mother — it has been cleared for everyone until the Day of Judgment. And not only was she innocent, not only was she pure, but rather she was from amongst the purest of all women.

A Source of Relief for All of Us

This, my dear brothers and sisters, also took place in the month of Ramadan, becoming a source of relief — not only for our mother A'isha, but for all of her children, including every single person that is listening to this and every single person that is watching this.

So if we are struggling with any accusation in our life, and people are slandering us and accusing us, let us turn back to that Allah who brought the innocence of A'isha — and He will surely bring our innocence indeed.
