Ramadan: The Month of Relief — Episode 4: Al-Hasan & Al-Husayn

Speaker: Mufti Abdul Wahab Waheed

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Dear brothers and sisters, welcome back to the fourth episode of the short series Ramadan: The Month of Relief. In this specific episode, we'll be speaking about an incident which was directly connected to the Prophet (SAW).

The Prophet (SAW), as we all know, was blessed with many children and he was also blessed with many male children, but those male children were taken away from him as toddlers and as babies.

So the Prophet (SAW) yearned for a child in his family and Allah made this dream come true when, within the beautiful union of Ali (RA) and Fatimah (RA), after the third year of Hijrah, Allah gave birth to a child from them — and that child was none other than al-Hasan (RA).

Ali (RA) came to the Prophet (SAW) to give him this good news, and the Prophet (SAW) asked him: "What are you going to name this child?" Ali (RA) responded by saying: Harb. The Prophet (SAW) said: "No, no — he is beautiful. His name is Hasan. His name is Hasan."

The Prophet's Love for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn

This attachment to this child and his younger brother Husayn was continuous and perpetual all throughout the life of the Prophet (SAW), where the Prophet (SAW) said:

مَنْ أَحَبَّ الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ فَقَدْ أَحْبَبْتُهُ، وَمَنْ أَبْغَضَهُمَا فَقَدْ أَبْغَضْتُهُ

"Whoever loves al-Hasan and al-Husayn, I love them; and whoever has any form of resentment for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, I have resentment for them."
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 143)

And the Prophet (SAW) also said:

الْحَسَنُ وَالْحُسَيْنُ سَيِّدَا شَبَابِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ

"Al-Hasan and al-Husayn will be the leaders of the youth of the people of Jannah."
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3768; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 118)

This incident of al-Hasan being born and brought into the world, and being the apple of the eye of our beloved Messenger (SAW), took place in the month of Ramadan.

A Month of Relief Within Our Own Children

Many of us are struggling with our children, our nephews, our nieces, our grandchildren. The month of Ramadan is a month of relief and victory within our own children. We make an effort on our children, we make du'a for them, we cry for them, and we turn back to Allah.

And if we are able to connect ourselves to Allah, Allah will bring our respect and our love in the hearts of our children. And if we're struggling to have children — for whichever reason or whatever reason — let's turn back to Allah and make du'a. Perhaps Allah will uncover that roadblock that is between us and having a beautiful child.

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

May Allah reunite us with our children — physically, spiritually, and mentally — connect us to them, make them respectful, and make them obedient children. And for those who are unable to have children, may Allah bless us with beautiful offspring.
