Speaker: Mufti Abdul Wahab Waheed

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

Dear brothers and sisters, welcome back to the sixth episode of the series Ramadan: The Month of Relief, Ramadan: the month of peace, and Ramadan: the month of victory and forgiveness for one and all. In this episode we'll be speaking about a specific event that took place many years after the demise of the Prophet and the Sahabah, رضي الله عنهم أجمعين. In this event specifically, as Muslims, we take it as a champion piece for ourselves.

We all speak about it, we all know about it, but very few of us are able to relate that this event actually took place in the month of Ramadan. Once again, proving the simple point that I am making throughout this series — that Ramadan has always been a source of help for Muslims: as it was in Badr, as it was in the chastity and the purity of Aisha رضي الله عنها, as it was in the revelation of the Quran, as it was in the conquest of Mecca. Once again, Allah shows to us that in this specific event, when the Crusaders had come and they had tormented and killed and caused atrocities all over the lands of the Muslims — specifically in the holy land of Baytul Maqdis, where they trampled over the Muslims, threw the children against the walls and killed them — written by Stanley Lane-Poole, a Christian historian, he himself writes this.

Salahuddin al-Ayyubi and the Battle of Hattin

There came a man that we all know: Salahuddin al-Ayyubi رحمه الله. If you want to learn more about him, we have a series called The Sabers of Islam where you can watch what we have said about him. But in this specific episode, we will be speaking about the Battle of Hattin, as they call it.

This was a battle in which the Crusaders had outnumbered the Muslims, but Salahuddin رحمه الله, with the help of Allah and of course the du'as that he was making, somehow managed to prevail. They managed to march into Baytul Maqdis without spilling anyone's lives. And when they walked into Baytul Maqdis, they forgave everyone and once again reclaimed the manner of conquering a place that the Prophet brought — by forgiving everyone, letting everyone go, giving them their belongings, letting them be happy and peaceful.

Peace is found in forgiving. Peace is found in giving other people happiness. And this is what Salahuddin showed us. And once again, the Battle of Hattin took place in the month of Ramadan, showing to us that Allah's special help is with us in the month of Ramadan.

The Battle Within: Victory Over Our Nafs

So if we're struggling with the battle amongst our nafs, and if we're struggling with a habit within ourselves, let's find it within us in this month. How is it possible for me to win this battle with my nafs? How can I stop listening to haram? How can I stop looking at haram? How can I stop eating that which is impermissible? How can I stop living in a manner which is displeasing to Allah? One habit at a time — that we let go and abandon and forsake — that is one step of me getting closer to my Allah and making my Allah happy.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلْكَرِيمِ

"O human, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Most Generous?"

Oh human, Allah is saying to us — what has made you so deceived and despondent in the mercy of Allah that you don't want to come back?

أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ

"Where are you going?" — Let's go back to Allah. And in this month we find it, that Allah has made it easy for people to leave bad habits. Allah has made it easy for people to find victory within themselves.

Victory Begins at Home

We don't have to find a victory anywhere else — we have to find a victory within ourselves, in our homes, with our families, with our children, by bringing Allah and His Messenger and the Quran within our homes, in our lives, and within our own social circles.

May Allah make us an embodiment of this, and make us those that when people look at us, they remember Allah; and when we speak, their knowledge increases; and when they see us working day in and day out, their remembrance of the Akhirah increases. And that is a true friend for every single person.
