Opening and Invocation

Bismillah, Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

Respected brothers and sisters, I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that He blesses everyone of us, the guests of the house of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala with forgiveness today, with blessings, choicest blessings of His today. We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that whatever situation and spiritual state we have come to His house today, that He allows us to leave this gathering in a far more superior state. I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that whatever issues, problems, and difficulties we might be dealing with in our own personal lives, may Allah azawajal allow us to hear something that will help address that issue, that will allow us to have a better understanding of what is needed from us, allows us to walk away in a state of a more refined purpose in life, and a more clear vision of how we need to spend the remainder years of our life on this earth. I ask Almighty Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that He not allow us to leave this gathering except in a state that our sins have been forgiven and replaced with good deeds. Allahuma ameen.

The Command to Reflect and Ponder

Honorable friends, a human being, a true Muslim is the one who is reflecting in any and all situations that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has placed him in. Allah says:

Do you not ponder? Do you not think? Do you not reason? Multiple places Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has instructed us to reflect. Reflect on nature. Reflect on the happenings of the world.

Lessons from Past Nations

All the أَلَمْ تَرَى is in the Qur'an. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is asking us to look at what happened to previous nations. Allah azawajal says:

How many towns and villages there are out there that they decided to go against the order of their Lord and they become aggressive and shamefully disobedient to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Allah azawajal says, We destroyed them. Allah says:

Do you not see what we have done to the previous nations? The strength of which never was created. Such people of such strength. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, But what did you see their ending? How did it come? Allah wants us to use our heart, our minds to reflect. He says:

The eyes do not become blind, meaning the blindness of the eyes is not as harmful to you as the blindness of the soul and the heart. That when the heart becomes soulless and when the heart loses its vision and its mission, its purpose, and cannot even look around and learn from the hardships of others, cannot learn from the difficulties of others, cannot get motivated by the achievements of others, then that dead heart, only Allah can revive.

The Three Types of Divine Signs

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has created three types of signs. One are the ayat qur'aniyyah, the verses of the Qur'an. Ayah means sign, signs of the Qur'an. One is ayat kawniyyah, ayat in nature. The seasons, the day and night, the beautiful mountains, the oceans, the rivers, nature around us, the children being born, someone passing away, these are all things that way Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala creates and runs the nature.

And then last is ayah takweeniyyah, the happenings of the world, the ups and downs. Who's becoming a president? Who's going to prison? Who's born? Who's dead? Who's becoming disgraced? Who's becoming honored? Who's becoming poor? Who's becoming rich? Who's becoming healthy? Who's becoming sick? Every single up and down, any newsworthy and non-newsworthy item that happens in your life and the life of anyone else, that's part of takween. That's part of takween. You thought you're not gonna make it for Jummah and you're here. Someone who thought he's gonna make it an hour early, he's still not here.

A Hajj Story: Divine Decree in Action

SubhanAllah, Allah blessed me with hajj this year. In Mina, I was just meeting my group, saying salam, introducing myself, because the groups now are large and whatnot. So I was speaking to one brother, he was smiling, he was so happy. He said, brother, I can't stop smiling. I said, mashallah, of course. It's the day of Eid, we've completed our Arafat and all the main rites of hajj.

He said, my first time I went for Umrah was in December, first time. And never had gone to the blessed lands of Mecca and Medina before. And he said, after I came back, I got inspired. It was such an amazing experience. He said, two of my friends reached out and said, hey, you should go for hajj. And he said, yeah, I never thought about it. But since you brought it up, and I just went for Umrah, inshallah, I'm ready.

So they started talking about hajj plans. So they're looking at different packages that might be available. So they said, we want to get a package that is closer to where you have to do the pelting, less walk, etc., in the heat. He said, I'm priced out of that. That's a little bit expensive. I can't afford that. I'm gonna stay that's further away, the Mu'aisen camps. So they said, no problem. We want you to come with us, we'll chip in. So they zelled him $4,000. Okay, the friends.

And they all got their passports and whatnot and went on to the Nusuk app, as you know. Now you have to do hajj through Nusuk. It's not the good old ways where you just go to the travel agency, I'm going for hajj with you. So he went, and he said, I'm sitting in front of you, completing my hajj, and my two friends did not able to get a package. They paid the $4,000 to me to get a more expensive package with them, but they were not able to get any package.

That's called Takween. That is everywhere around you Takween. How did that happen? Guess what? Because Allah is in charge. You don't go for hajj because you have money. Someone who didn't have money went, and someone who has the money to give to others not able to go. You see that happening all the time.

There was people in my group, subhanAllah, who are going on behalf of an extremely wealthy person, subhanAllah. His children, unfortunately, left the deen. You know, this is very common nowadays. Father is Muslim, but kids are no longer Muslim. Now, he says, how am I going to go for hajj? I'm old, I'm sick. All the money in the world, but subhanAllah, did not perform his hajj when things were easier. Now he's old, and the packages are different. It's not as easy as it was.

So, subhanAllah, it's his money, but someone else went to go perform hajj. There you go. Someone who had no expectation, they're able to use his money to go and perform the hajj, while the man, subhanAllah, himself wasn't able to. InshaAllah, Allah will give him the reward for it. It's called hajj al-badal. It only happens when a person absolutely has no possibility of performing hajj during his lifetime. Meaning he's not terminally ill. If a person is quite ill, but inshaAllah might get better next year, you cannot send someone on your behalf. It's nafil, it's fine, but the fardh hajj must be done still.

So my point is, all around us, we have these three signs. Signs of the Qur'an. Every verse of the Qur'an is a sign. Signs in nature, and signs in the happenings of the world. And we are asked and tasked to reflect on all of these things and take lessons. That is the strength of a human being. That we reflect and adjust our moves based on what we see.

Living in the Era of Fitnah

My beloved friends, I want us to understand that we are living in an era filled with signs that are different. This is an era of fitnah, of era of trials and tribulations all over the world, even here. Things that we never saw, our parents never saw, our grandparents never saw, are happening daily. Whether it's the abundance of sickness, whether it's the abundance of sudden death, whether it is the abundance of divorce, whether it's the abundance of sins like zina and LGBTQ, whether it is weather patterns changing that are creating havoc across the globe.

Havoc across the globe. There isn't a single week in this country where there isn't a major weather problem in this country. And then not a single week. You'll see in multiple. We have floodings happening right now that have made it to the main national news. You have massive forest fires happening right now. You have mudslides happening. You have subhanallah, heatwaves happening this weekend. All sorts of things. You had a heatwave in Alaska, a heat advisory. Subhanallah.

All over the world, if you look at the news, you'll see places where it's supposed to be cold, it's hot now. Where it's supposed to be hot, it's cold. When it's dry season, it's pouring down. When it's supposed to rain, it's dry. All from the signs of the hour.

Signs of the Hour Manifest Today

All of these signs that Rasulullah ﷺ, everything I just mentioned so far, the abundance of the various sins that you see, the abundance of disobedience of children, disobedience and disrespect of children towards their parents. And husbands and wives quarreling and ending their marriages. And the list goes on. Every single thing that you see from the signs of the hour, vast majority, any one of you, if you choose to pick up a book that's got the signs of the hour listed, or listen to a talk from 20 years ago, 10 years ago on the signs of the hour, and you just look at what's happening today, you will obviously connect the dots.

And you'll say that, wow, this subhanAllah, the same khutbah, the same talk, the same book. The scholars before would say, Allahu a'alam, ya'ani bimuradihi bithalik. Allah knows best what Rasulullah ﷺ meant by this. Allah knows best. We haven't seen it being prevalent yet. But everything that's there, all the minor signs you see are here. The minor signs. The major signs are to come.

If we do not reflect on that, what a huge, huge pitfall for us. What a huge loss for us not realizing what type of era we're in.

Holding onto Faith Like Grasping Hot Coals

From the signs of the hour, the Prophet ﷺ said:

(Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 280)

That the one who holds on to his faith will be like the one who's holding on to a burning piece of charcoal, an ember.

(Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 218)

A man will wake up as a believer. By nightfall, he will have left Islam. He will go to bed as a believer. By morning, he will have left Islam. No one is putting a gun to him. Maybe, maybe, maybe not. But what will do, the Prophet ﷺ said, he will sell his deen for some dunya.

Dunya will come to him and he'll have a choice. You can stay a Muslim and not be as materialistically successful. Or you can give up your faith and act like someone who you weren't born into. And then we'll give you lots of things. So when people whose faith is weak and they have this choice between living it up in this world and remaining a Muslim and having a little difficulty, those whose faith is weak, Allahu Akbar. May Allah save us from coming from that category. Say ameen.

They will say, Brother, I don't know about hereafter. We heard about it but we haven't seen it. We got to focus here and now. As long as my life right now is good, that's it.

What Motivates a True Believer?

Think about it. What motivates a person to come for Fajr? What motivates a person to come for Isha when the days are so long? What motivates a person to guard his gaze when everything around outside is haram? What motivates a person to control the way he or she uses their cell phone and their screen time? Guarding what they watch, guarding what they hear and listen, guarding what they read.

What controls you and I from having a burst of anger when our spouse or our children, our parents or our siblings act in a manner that we're not used to or accustomed to or wanting to hear? How do we react?

In any and all of these situations, the one who fears Allah and standing in front of Allah on the day of judgment is the one who will be successful in all of these scenarios.

The Test of Our Time

The fear of Allah and standing in front of Allah on the day of judgment will get a person out of bed at 5 a.m. I just met some brothers from Norway, subhanAllah. We're out here in Chicago in Jamaat. MashaAllah, I asked them, what time is your Maghrib? They said 11:30. I said, what time is your Fajr? 1:45, right? 11:30, subhanAllah. Maghrib, 1:45 Fajr. How does a person live in that type of atmosphere and pray in Salat? This is the example.

The Reality of the Grave

SubhanAllah, so a person, how does a person remain steadfast in all these situations? That's because he fears that he, if he loses anger on his mom, his dad, if he disrespects his wife or her husband, or disrespects his children, or his neighbor, or steals something from the inheritance of someone else, I gotta face Allah. And sooner or later, I have something called the first night, not first night of marriage, it's called the first night in the grave.

The first night in the grave will come for all of us. And there's nobody there. It's hot outside. Can you imagine the heat of the grave? No fans, no ACs, nothing. Complete darkness between us and munkar nakir. That's coming for me. That's coming for all of us. And how we spend our days and nights, that's exactly we're gonna see the reward, or Allah forbid, the punishment of it, not in paradise and here in Jahannam afterwards. It's gonna start in the grave.

Just the first three questions: مَن رَبُّك؟ مَا دِينُك؟ وَمَا تَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الرَّجُل؟ Who is your Lord? What is your religion? And what do you say about Prophet Muhammad? A person needs to know the questions, the cheat sheet. There's no cheat sheet. It is your actions that will answer. Our actions in this world, the private lifestyle that I have and that you have, away from the public eye. That is what's gonna help us answer the private questioning of the grave.

The Contrast of Our World

Today, we live in a world of streaming. People streaming 6, 8, 10, 12 hours, 18 hours a day. You may have heard there are people who are streaming themselves sleeping. That's crazy, right? But guess what? What's crazier? There's people watching others sleeping. We're in that world right now. Millions of people watching other people sleeping. What type of horrible world have we entered?

And at the same time, we have hundreds of thousands of people as of today, starving to death in Gaza. And subhanAllah, when they're being called to give food, you have little copters on top, drones, attached with guns and bullets, firing at three-year-olds, two-year-olds as they're lining up.

The Reality of Gaza

If I were to give free donuts and lollipops, how the kids would run even though, mashaAllah, they had a good breakfast and they're gonna have a nice lunch. Imagine you have malnourished boys and girls who have not eaten a single piece of meat for three months since Ramadan, right? Not a single piece of meat, not a single chocolate, not a single, subhanAllah, dessert, of course, and no proteins, entering into Gaza ever since a blockade went in full scale.

And how far is the food? The food, you could probably see the trucks lined up. The trucks are filled with food that people like you have sent, sitting there rotting. And subhanAllah, they can see it, but as they run towards it, they're shot dead. That's happening right now. SubhanAllah.

My cousin, subhanAllah, is there in Gaza, in Nassar Hospital. And he sent me a message last night, which I shared with a lot of people. And I'm looking and I'm saying, reflect, you have people watching people snoring. You have people watching pornography. You have people watching everything else. And who's gonna watch the people who are being slaughtered to death, right now? Little Fatimahs and little Aishahs and little Khalids and Mohammeds and Yusufs, just like your kids and my kids.

SubhanAllah, he said, the average four-year-old there is tasked with going getting water for the family. They have to carry something like maybe 10-15 pounds of water. Four-year-olds to 13-year-olds, that small age group. They're walking 5 kilometers. And in the process of that, many of them get shot dead.

He talked about, subhanAllah, he sent me pictures, the way after udhiyah, you slaughter the animal and you got on the slaughterhouse blood and that you use squeegees to clean. I saw a picture he sent me of shuhada's blood, squeegee being used to clean it off. Mass casualties. When does a mass casualty happen? Every few hours. 60 bodies in wheelbarrows are being brought. Wheelbarrows.

A pregnant mother, subhanAllah, comes in and a copter from the top has intentionally shot her. Not killed her, killed her baby. You have to do quickly, you have to take out the dead body, the dead baby. This is one of the worst scenes he's ever seen. A form baby dead in front. And he said, at the same time, you see dads holding on to the decapitated heads of their kids as brain matter is flowing out. Still hugging that skull before one last chance, before they lay them rest in the grave. That is happening as we speak right now.

One apple going for sale for $300. One pound of coffee for $300. Flour for $700, a black market. If someone deposits money in a bank account, if you wanna go pull it out from whatever banking system still exists, 40%, 40% service charge. An entire industry of gangsters, Allah knows from where, who are making it miserable.

He said, when you go to your local grocery store, you are confused what type of apple you should get. Because there are so many colors and so many textures. He said, over here, no one has seen a fruit for months. No one has seen a piece of meat for months. An average person has lost 50 to 60 pounds. He said, 30 kilos since Ramadan.

The Faith of the Oppressed

And subhanAllah, beloved friends, at all of this happening, but they're reading Surah Al-Ahzab. They're reading Surah Al-Fath. They're reading Surahs of the Qur'an and consoling themselves that this will come to an end. And they are telling that subhanAllah, whatever is happening is happening because Allah wanted it to happen.

One of the doctors as he was leaving crying, he said, I feel so bad, I'm going back to America. I'm leaving you all in this state. You know what he told that doctor? He said, don't worry. Allah knows you all can't handle this. That's why He didn't put you through this. And Allah knows we can handle it. That's why He's putting us through this. Subhanallah, subhanallah. Those men and women and children are of a different breed.

Those are the people that I remember that the Prophet ﷺ when he said, I wish I could meet my brothers. And they said, Ya Rasulullah, are we not your brothers? And the Prophet ﷺ said, No, Sahaba, you are my ashabi. You are my companions. My brothers are those people who will believe in me without having seen me. This is what you call belief in Allah and His Rasul.

The True Test

Find me one incident in Gaza in the past two years. One incident of someone saying, that's it, done. I'm done with Allah and Islam. I'm gonna become an atheist. Have you heard of this? Any atheist coming out of Gaza? Have you heard of anyone who said, I'm done with Islam?

And let's look at the suburbs of where I am today. Subhanallah, I won't say the name of the city, but very close to you. One of my own students, Subhanallah said, he memorized the Qur'an, not too far away from where we are today. And with a bunch of rich, young, 16, 17 year old entitled suburban kids. He said, in a matter of two years, from those 10, 5 of them left Islam. 5 of them after memorizing Qur'an. This is the fitna we're in.

You tell me who's in a worse off situation. A 17 year old suburban kid, after memorizing Qur'an, who said, I got nothing to do with Allah and His Rasul. Or a person who's becoming shaheed there in those fields. You tell me who's in big problem. Who's spending his nights and days watching filth anime and pornography on their phones in the summer and the winter, and video games, subhanallah. Forgetting about the real issues of life in themselves. Or someone who's giving his life, while bringing flour for their mom and dad.

You ask yourself, who is the miskeen? This is a real question. The million dollar question to say, have we lost our soul? MashaAllah, most of us here have eyesight. But ask ourselves, what has happened to the basira of our hearts? Why are we not reflecting? Why are we not thinking what's going on?

Our Time and Our Test

Beloved friends, our time will come up soon. And it will be when you and I will be in the grave, having to answer those questions. It should not come in a state, that Allah is not looking forward to meeting me or you. And we're not looking forward to meeting Him because of what we have done. Now is the time to repent.

You and I, our heart should ache for Gaza. Our heart should ache for Sudan. Our heart should ache for Yemen. Our heart should ache for Damascus and Syria and all the other areas of Kashmir and other parts of India. It's a sad long story of bloodbath after bloodbath in each of these areas. I don't have time to list all the countries. There are many I didn't list. But the type of horrific things are happening across the world.

Is this something surprising? If you read the signs of the hour, it's not. But you and I need to make sure that we're on the right side of our own history. You and I need to make sure that when our death comes, we should not have regrets. That we led our life in such a proper manner that Allah knows you tried your best to be a good Muslim. And that you fulfilled the rights of Allah, the rights of Rasulullah and the rights of fellow human beings, the rights of the planet, the rights of animals and rights of every creation of Allah.

It should not happen that our death comes to us in a state that we're oppressing ourselves or anyone else.

Understanding Our True Test

My beloved brothers, our test is not to worry about a drone attack as we leave Juma. Our test is not a suicide bomber hitting the masjid. Alhamdulillah, say Alhamdulillah. Our test is not having to choose between medicine or food.

Our test is to guard our eyes from watching haram. Our test is to guard our gaze, our ears from listening to haram. Our test is to be respectful to our mom and dad. Caring and loving. Our test is to embrace our youth, embrace our children with respect and love, teach them, guide them. Our test is to be an amazing husband, an amazing wife. Our test is to be regular for Salatul Fajr. Our test is to be here for Maghrib and Isha.

Our test is to use the summer in a productive manner, away from our screens, limiting our technology use and using this time learning the deen, learning the Qur'an, learning the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, and improving our character before it's too late.

And let me just tell you, whatever fitnah you're happening across, and the fitnah I'm speaking about here, based on the signs of the hour, it will only become more difficult to remain a Muslim. That's what the hadith mentions.

The Test of Faith in Difficult Times

That holding on to the deen will be like holding on to a burning piece of charcoal. Go to your barbecue restaurant or you have a barbecue in your weekend in your home, open up the lid, try to remove the chicken or whatever is there, touch that bare hands, you're not gonna be able to do that. Try to touch the grill with your bare hands, you're not gonna be able to do that. Imagine putting your bare hands right inside and picking up a burning piece of charcoal like this. Imagine my friends, how long would you last? Even if someone were to tell you, I'll give you a million dollars. Which guy here says, halas, I'll take it. A million dollars and I'll hold a burning piece of charcoal until you tell me to drop. Nobody. Not possible. Nabi ﷺ gave this example that holding on to the deen will be like holding on to an ember. Imagine what level of iman you have to have for that. Do my sons and daughters or me and my wife have that iman? That's a question.

The Time for Preparation is Now

Right now is the time to prepare on that iman. I encourage us to use our summer, our free time that we have in the most productive manner, in the amal of da'wah, in the amal of the masjid, in the amal of Qur'an, of ilm, ta'lim, whatever it is. Utilize our time, please, before it's too late. I ask Allah to awaken my heart, awaken your hearts. I ask Allah to remove the veils from our eyes of our heart. I ask Allah to allow us to look at what's happening around the globe, to be able to see right from wrong. May Allah allow us to see the picture that Allah wants us to see. Say ameen. And may Allah hold our hands and guide us to do that which is right.

Oh Allah, inspire us with what's the right way to do now. And protect us from the evil of our nafs. أمين يا رب العالمين

The Call to Salatul Fajr

I want you to take this opportunity. There's so many things that can be done. But salatul fajr and isha, please. Fajr in the masjid, fajr in the masjid, fajr in the masjid. If we don't do it now, what are we waiting for? What, what catastrophe are we waiting for? Are we waiting for the drone to get to your house? My house? To wake up? What exactly are we waiting for? If this is not the time for every able-bodied male to be in the masjid for salah, what will it take? This is my humble appeal. This crowd has to come for fajr in every masjid across America and beyond.

I went to Quds, alhamdulillah, in October. I was not allowed to enter salatul fajr. They barred it. I prayed dhuhr, asr, maghrib, and isha. But for fajr, there was a special, special blockage. They said, nope. And I was very harshly pushed away. I asked why, from the Palestinian people in Aqsa. They said, because fajr, they know if you come for fajr, that means you are awake. We want you to sleep. Don't come for fajr. Don't come for fajr. That is the health of a Muslim community is their attendance for fajr salah.

Let's do it, brother. Say insha'Allah. Say insha'Allah that we will come with our able-bodied, masha'Allah, elders, sons to the salatul fajr. Women can push their husbands. Come with them, whatever it is. And Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala will give you the reward of ibadah of the entire night.

May Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala give us sympathy in our hearts, and allow us to seriously spend time making dua for all those who are going through affliction. And may Allah make the dua of the people of Gaza accepted on our behalf. And may He awaken the ummah through their duas as well.

Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala said, Alhamdulillah wa kafa wa salatu wa salamu ala rasulillah.

May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive the marhuma, and grant her Jannatul Firdaus, and grant the entire family patience as well. Ameen, Rabbil Alameen.

First and foremost, Jazakallah khairun to Mufti Azim-ud-Din Ahmad for the wonderful khutbah and reminder. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala take away their pains and grant them ease. May He take away their sorrows and grant them peace.

Instructions for Salatul Janazah

Insha'Allah, Salatul Janazah. The Salatul Janazah will be performed with no Adhan, no Iqamah, four Takbir, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, and then Salam. Four Takbirs, and the Adhan and the Iqamah was already given at the time of birth. The Adhan in one year, the Iqamah in one year at the time of birth. Now there's the Salah. That's how quick our life is. The time between Iqamah and Salah. Keep that in mind.

Insha'Allah, what is Salatul Janazah? It's a dua for the deceased. We're seeking forgiveness for them. And after the first Takbir, we'll recite either Surah Fatiha, or we'll recite Salah al-Nabi. Thana, sorry, Thana. سبحانك اللهم وحمدك. And then second Takbir, Insha'Allah, we'll recite Salah al-Nabi. Third Takbir, we'll recite Dua Maghfirah. اللهم اغفر لحيينا وميتنا وشاهدنا وغائبنا وصغيرنا وكبيرنا وذكرنا وأنثانا. Since it's a female, we'll read, اللهم من أحييتها منا فأحيها على الإسلام. If we do not know the entire Dua, at least read, And after the fourth Takbir, we'll say Salam, Insha'Allah.
