(Tirmidhi)

Beloved brothers and sisters, dear students, dear listeners, elders. Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

The Self-Correcting Nature of Islam

Our beautiful deen that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has blessed you and I with has been equipped with a very important aspect of self-correction. The deen of Islam that Allah has blessed you and I with comes with it a method of ensuring that this deen remains strong and fresh within the believers. There is a process of self-cleaning. Like you have the technology today and various appliances, there's a self-cleaning technology. So deen of Islam has been equipped and Allah has blessed us, this ummah, with a whole concept, a whole department, which is very central to our faith that focuses on ensuring that there's a constant revival in the faith.

That we are constantly ensuring that we are following our mission statement. That we are ensuring that we are working towards our vision. Ensuring that all departments have cohesiveness in it. Ensuring that every single department is standing true to the founding principles of that department. Like you see this jargon that's used in the corporate. Similarly, we'll see, you can translate that, transition that into Islam as well.

The Institution of Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil

That the whole institution of أَمْرُ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْيُ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ — enjoining good and forbidding evil — a responsibility on every believer and a higher responsibility upon people of knowledge and the people of position and power, ensures that our community is constantly checking itself to ensure that we are on the sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam, on the manhaj of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam, on the manhaj of the Qur'an.

And any sort of deviation which may naturally happen over time due to various influences gets corrected as soon as possible. This is a very important aspect of our faith. And when we ensure that this aspect of faith is fulfilled, then inshallah we'll see growth. And we'll see greatness. And we'll see the spread of the deen. And we'll see that the deen will no matter how many centuries pass by, elements of it or many elements of it will remain exactly as they were 1500 years ago.

The Preservation of Our Faith

The book of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala — the way it's just amazing, the way till today it's memorized, the way it's still recited, the way it's taught, the way we spend time focusing on its tafsir, and all various dimensions of the Qur'an. It is amazing that you have a huge group of people that are so focused on their book and nothing has changed for so many centuries. So you see the benefits of the Muslims being constantly reminded to be well-grounded.

And that anytime someone comes up with an opinion or a statement that is not orthodox, that is not found in the earliest of generations, immediately you'll see that the scholars will stand up, even the average people, non-scholars will stand up and defend their faith. To say, a person, you do not have a right to misrepresent the verses of the Qur'an, or reinterpret the verses of the Qur'an in such a manner that goes against the teachings of the earliest generation.

That is the iman within the average believer, that if he hears something about his faith that he's never heard before, he sees something that is being practiced, immediately he'll say, is this part of the sunnah? Or is this an innovation? Is this really how these verses have been explained in the past? Or is this a new age interpretation?

What is that? That's unique to this faith, that we don't sit there and say, hey, that sounds right, why don't we make a new group? That sounds right, why don't we just add this new flavor in? Alhamdulillah, the average Muslim strives to ensure that the deen stays the way it was supposed to stay in its original state from the time Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave this deen to us.

The Three Levels of Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil

And so from amongst those factors that play a huge role in ensuring this deen stays strong, is the aspect of أَمْرُ الْمَعْرُوفِ, the aspect of if you see something wrong, not just report it, correct it yourself. If you see something that is not in line with what you have been taught by the deen about how the sunnah is supposed to be, then you got three steps, you got three ways to do it.

First Level: Taking Action with Your Hands

If you see something unacceptable, if you see something wrong, then go ahead and don't sit back and talk about it. Don't speak ill about someone behind their back. Instead, take the lead and stop them with your own hand. Explain to them, this is not how it's supposed to be. Hold the hand of the oppressor and say, this is not how it's supposed to be. We do not sit on the sideline and watch when there is oppression of any sort or when there is misguidance of any sort being spread.

We as believers are supposed to stand up, whether the oppressor is a Muslim, whether the oppressor is our own relative, whether the oppressor is our own son, or whoever it may be. Our job is to ensure that we stand by the truth. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says:

Remain steadfast to the principles of justice even if it means it's against your own relatives. وَلَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبَىٰ — Even if it means against your own relatives, as a believer we have to stand up and say what's right. We are not supposed to be sold to the highest bidder. But rather we're supposed to be steadfast on our belief and say, no matter who it is, no matter what it is, this is what my faith teaches us, and I'm not gonna budge on that. That's what the deen teaches us.

So the first thing you do is you hold, you utilize your hands to see, stop a person from indulging in the sin or in the disobedience of Allah that he's involved in.

Second Level: Speaking Out

فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ — If a person is not capable of doing so, فَبِلِسَانِهِ — then at least speak against it. Say, brother, this is incorrect. Or if you can't even speak to the brother, then you speak to the community, you speak to your children, you speak to your spouse to say, there are certain actions that have become common in society, actually but they are مَنْهِيٌّ عَنْهُ, they are prohibited, they are disliked, they are haram.

There are certain individuals doing that, we may not have the ability to change them, but I want you to ensure that you do not think that because they are doing it, it becomes permissible. So that is the responsibility that we use our tongue to try to rectify. So that if there's an infection, that it stays in one corner. If there is a mass growing, or there is a cancer, that it is sidelined, and that it's not allowed to grow.

Every one of us have to do that. When you see something happening in society that's wrong, if you cannot yourself speak up to the oppressor, or to the aggressor, or to the one who's indulged in any type of bid'ah, innovation, any new type of deen, or indulge in a major sin, then at least we speak to our own family and friends to ensure that this doesn't affect them.

Third Level: Feeling Pain in the Heart

And the third thing is, if a person is not capable of even doing that, especially not capable of speaking to the aggressor himself, or the one who's sinning right to his face, فَبِقَلْبِهِ — then a person should at the very least feel the pain of it in his heart. There are many different explanations of this hadith, I'm sharing with you one here. فَبِقَلْبِهِ — A person needs to in his heart feel the pain, and should resort to du'a to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

That, ya Allah, I am not capable of stopping the sin or the oppression by my hands, nor am I able to speak to him about it, nor am I able to speak to anyone else about it. So now what should I do? Should I just sit back and say, because I can't do that, let me just move on with my life? No. فَبِقَلْبِهِ — The third dimension or the third level is that a person needs to feel upset about it, sad about it, frustrated and angry about it in his heart.

And then channel that frustration, anger, sadness, not towards despair, not towards despondency, not towards hate, but channel that in a positive way. Number one, with du'a. They use that pain, that, ya Allah, guide my fellow brother, I don't know what to say, I tried speaking to him, didn't work. Tried stopping him, it didn't work. But he's still continuing on his path of X, Y, Z. Now what should we do? We use this opportunity to at least stand up in the night, make du'a for him, make du'a for her, etc. Whoever that oppressor or aggressor or sinner is.

Applying These Principles to Current Crises

And now when we're dealing with the crisis that is right in front of our eyes for the past month of what we're seeing, we have the similarly three things. That when it comes to munkar, which is oppression that is taking place, a person needs to try his best to stop it with his own hands. At least not be an active participant.

Whatever level it may be, if a person can choose where he shops or where he doesn't shop, go ahead, do that. If a person can choose where he spends his money and where he doesn't, go ahead, do that. If a person decides to cut down on many of the even halal entertainments, to say, I'm gonna use this time to ensure that I am focused more on my, not only ibadah, but my activism, both. Then alhamdulillah, that's one move you're doing.

You're using your hands in some way or another, you're kicking. You are doing something to tell yourself and the ummah that you're not dead, that you're alive. That you will use whatever permissible means you have at your disposal to show to the world and to show to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala at the displeasure of one of the gravest sins.

The Gravity of Taking Innocent Life

After kufr and shirk, zulm is what? The zulm, oppression, and the killing of innocent people. What could be a graver sin than that? As Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says:

وَمَن يَقْتُلْ مُؤْمِنًا مُّتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَاؤُهُ جَهَنَّمُ خَالِدًا فِيهَا وَغَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَلَعَنَهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُ عَذَابًا عَظِيمًا

Whoever kills a believer intentionally, وَمَن يَقْتُلْ مُؤْمِنًا مُّتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَاؤُهُ — then his punishment, jahannam, shall be hellfire. فَجَزَاؤُهُ جَهَنَّمُ خَالِدًا فِيهَا — He shall remain in there forever. Then Allah azza wa jal says, He is prepared. Prepared for him a very painful torment. وَغَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ — And Allah shall be angry at him forever. وَلَعَنَهُ — And Allah shall curse him forever. Look at the levels of it. Allah has already prepared for him a very painful, powerful, large torment.

He could have just said he's gonna go to jahannam. But look at the emphasis here. Because definitely after disobedience, after denial of the existence of Allah or ascribing partners with Allah, this is the gravest sin. The killing of a believer, especially for the sake of the fact that he is a believer. It could be nothing graver than that.

Our Response to Oppression

So this oppression, how do we deal with that oppression? A person needs to use his hands. A person must. Whatever ways from spending or withholding, from writing letters is using your hands. Writing an email is using your hands. Picking up the phone and calling someone is using your hands. Use whatever way, means you have to ensure that you can say to Allah and to your own self and to your kids that your dad is not someone who just sat there on the sidelines and said, you know what, what are we gonna do today? We're gonna go out to eat. What games are we gonna watch? And how are we gonna spend this weekend?

No, your dad is a sensible man who has some sense of self-respect and dignity. And he has love for his faith.

Taking Action: The Three Levels of Responding to Evil

And as a family man, this is the ummah, this is my family. So I can't be sitting there on the sidelines not doing anything. So you have to show your face to Allah. You have to look in the mirror yourself. You have to be able to look at your kids. You have to be able to tell your grandchildren what you've done. And a person, if you sit back on the sidelines, you won't be able to do any of that. That's the least. Create within yourself, what am I doing? Let me use my hands to actually say, I've done something.

All of us here, I ask myself today, you ask yourself, in the past month what have you actively done with your hands? What have you actively done with your hands? Yes, I'm not an elected official, neither are you. But you don't have to be an elected official to tell your conscience, to tell Allah, to tell the ummah, to tell yourself, that you have done النهي عن المنكر to some degree. This is the very basic level that every single one of us needs to do.

Using Your Tongue to Speak Truth

Number two, our language is our tongue. We use our tongue to speak about it. Whether that is sharing the other side of the story, sharing the real events that are happening with our family and friends, with a co-worker, without being tenacious, without being angry and emotional, without being confrontational, but simply at least at an educational level that we are sharing exactly to those who are not 100% brainwashed, to those who are honestly just in the middle, on the fence, or slightly on the other side. And they simply need to know what the other side is. There are loads of people like that.

And you see today, that the protests that are happening across the globe, and especially in this country, who are leading that? Are the Muslim organizations at the forefront? No. The largest one that took place last weekend, I was told that from about 40 or 45 organizations, 35 at least were non-Muslim. So it is yes, sad that the Muslims are not taking the lead in this. But it is one way good that the fact that the aspect of being human, the aspect of just at least for justice, whether you are a Muslim or not, is riling up, alhamdulillah, thousands of people across the globe. And definitely the pressure is being felt. There's no doubt about it. You can read the papers, they speak about it. The pressure is being felt.

Because the average person out there who is not brainwashed, is saying, I cannot believe I am alive and watching a genocide happening live-streamed. This has never happened before. You thought it was bad enough to see a school shooting live-streamed. That was horrible. But to see an entire genocide live-streamed is something that the world has never seen before. And now the average person says, Wait, how in the world are we just sitting back and not doing anything? Alhamdulillah, it has raised awareness within so many people.

So you have an option of using your tongue within the realm of legality, whatever is legal and allowed in your country or in your place. Using that which is allowed that a person raises awareness and explain to people that this is not right.

Using Your Heart: The Minimum Level of Faith

And if a person is seriously not capable of doing the above two, because of simply being weak of faith, being scared, saying that, I just can't. Alright my friends, then you're still not off the hook. You have to then at least use your heart. Use your heart, place it in your hands in front of Allah.

And say, Ya Allah, I can't do anything, but I can do is I can give you my tears. I can give the people of Gaza, I can give them water, I can give them blood, I can give them aid, but I can give them my tears. And so when a person places his heart like this in front of Allah, and makes sincere dua for those who are oppressed or for those who are... for the hidayah of those oppressors. And if hidayah is not meant for them, then the destruction of them. Whoever the oppressors may be, anywhere.

And this is not something specific to this scenario. I'm giving you general principles from the beginning of the talk till now. I'm giving you general principles of what this deen teaches us. That anytime, any sin is happening, this is how the three tiers we're supposed to go through. The lastly is the قلب, that a person has to use his heart to not only pray, but also feel guilty.

Beloved brothers, the Prophet ﷺ said, That is the lowest level of faith. Lowest level. Right, superlative form. أضعف, the weakest form of faith.

That if a person's heart, Allah forbid, does not feel pain and anger, when he sees sin being committed of any sort. When the deen is being demolished. Or in this case, when people's innocent children and women and men are mercilessly being mowed down.

The Reality of Current Events

As we're walking in here, you've seen that subhanAllah, there is an entire people or patients and doctors and random people who are trying to save themselves are in a hospital and they're surrounded by tanks. Right now this is happening. The largest hospital, Al-Shifa Hospital, is right now surrounded by tanks and there's gunfire happening. There's people inside, of course, packed with people. What will happen in the next hour, Allah knows.

But today, at least in Jumu'ah, you can put your heart out. Say, ya Allah, please, I beg you, that you save these people. That you have mercy, give guidance to these senseless people who have just been brainwashed. And what are they doing? Even the soldiers, they've got brains. Even the 17, 18, 19, 20-year-olds. Where is the heart? Where is your sense of, where is your moral compass? Honestly, where is your moral compass?

Yes, your superiors may be trying to brainwash you, but there is your own moral compass that you say, you know what? Every man has got to go in his own grave. Everyone's got his own moral compass. Well, does this make sense? Do these orders make sense? What am I about to do? Is this by any means acceptable? My mom and dad, did they teach me like this? Regardless of who belongs to what faith. But how could I be doing this?

And history is gonna bear witness to this because it's not gonna be buried. Many times things happen and they find out in the genocide of Rwanda, the genocide of Bosnians. Many things you found out days later. Burma as well. Many things you find out days later. But subhanAllah, here everything is live streamed. So we're hoping that Allah wakes someone's heart. And to say, you know what? This is enough is enough. I cannot constantly be just blindfoldedly being led in a certain direction. I have my own conscious as well.

The Heart's Response: A Test of Faith

So what we have to do, with our heart a person has to feel sadness. With our heart a person has to feel anger. With our heart a person has to ask Allah.

My beloved friends, what I wanna share with you again, I'm gonna repeat this, Allah forbid, I hope there's not a single wretched soul like this in this entire room and beyond, whose heart doesn't feel pain, whose heart doesn't get emotional, whose heart doesn't take effect. Because then the question is, do you even have a strand of faith within you? That is the question. Do you have any faith within you?

If any of these things do not allow you to stop in your tracks, and to think about what's happening. And if you say, it's business as usual. It's just job, entertainment, and home. And that's all it is. Then honestly we feel that before we pray the janazah of the people over there, we should pray the janazah of these people, who have absolutely become heartless. How many people are like that? I don't know. But we gotta make sure that the symptoms, what are they?

The Signs: Increased Connection to Allah

Externally, have we start coming up to the masjid more? Have we increased as-saf in Fajr? And the answer is no, we have not in this masjid. Today I looked, right? This week, we have not increased as-saf in Fajr in one month. So that's the question. Have we increased as-saf in Isha? Have we increased as-saf in Maghrib? Yes, I know, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and work. Fine, Fajr and Isha. What's going on in Fajr and Isha? 6:15 is Fajr, 7:30 is Isha. Why can we not increase a row? Why can we not have 8-9 at least for Fajr? And 12-13 for Isha? We can do it.

That's what we're talking about. If you have a heart and it's taking effect, and you can't do the above two, or you are doing the above two, with your tongue and with your hands, then please you have to couple it up with one of the most powerful things that we learned from this entire past month, is that no one is your friend besides Allah. You have no allies in any political party besides Allah. Your caretaker is Allah. Your friend is Allah. And if we cut off our ties with our friend, and only caretaker Allah, by abandoning a masjid, well, we're absolutely in no luck. We have nothing to look forward to.

Du'a for Courage and Guidance

I ask Allah that He allows us to become from that group of people who's always standing up for the truth, who invites towards the truth, speaks the truth, and forbids evil, not just speak the truth, but makes us amongst those people who have the courage, who have the courage at any time, at home, outside home, to be able to speak for the truth, and speak against evil.

And may He make us amongst those who can not only speak, but use our hands, and whatever means we have, to be able to stop evil. And along with that, may He make us amongst those people who use our hearts to make lots and lots of dua, whenever evil happens across the earth. Making dua for guidance, making dua for the end of evil.

The Warning Against Neglecting Our Duty

We ask Allah that He not punish us for leaving this obligation as well, for indeed that is a whole different chapter, which the hadith that I shared, which I didn't have time to translate, which specifically speak about, that when the ummah neglects الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر then as a punishment for that, Allah will choose to send such leaders, and such oppressive tyrants, who will oppress all of you, and at that time, تدعونه you will ask Allah for help, and your dua will not be accepted.

This is what Rasulullah ﷺ said, that this is a direct result when the ummah will stop forbidding from evil, and inviting towards good, that Allah will punish them through tyrant rulers. And oppressive enemies.

So we ask Allah that whatever the ummah collectively and individually has done to neglect this command, that He forgive us for that. And He allows these past weeks to be a wake up call for myself, for my children, for all of you, for your spouses, for your children. And He bring a true revival of deen across the globe.

Final Du'a

And may He have mercy upon those who are being slaughtered. May Allah accept their martyrdom. May Allah grant shifa to those who have been sick, and those who have been wounded. May Allah cure them. And may Allah give them صبراً جميلاً now. And may Allah give them unwavering level of yaqeen. And through their sacrifice of blood and tears, may Allah give people like myself and yourself hidayah. Ameen.

Du'a for Our Brothers and Sisters in Palestine

The plight of our fellow brothers and sisters, ya Allah, who are innocent, ya Allah, who are innocent, who are genuinely, ya Allah, muttaqi, God-fearing people, ya Allah, who have, ya Allah, extraordinarily high levels of iman. Oh Allah, we ask you, ya Allah, to join our du'as with their du'a, and accept our du'as, ya Allah. Oh Allah, accept their du'as, we ask you to accept their du'as, accept their pleas, ya Allah.

Oh Allah, those who are, ya Allah, holed up in the hospitals, ya Allah, we ask you to grant them your special protection. Oh Allah, just like you assisted the Muslims in, there is so many different expeditions during the time of the Prophet, alayhis-salatu-salaam. Oh Allah, from such unseen ways, ya Allah, unseen armies, ya Allah. Oh Allah, that you created fear in the enemy, ya Allah, and you sent winds, wind became an army, ya Allah. Oh Allah, birds became an army, ya Allah, you have every single thing in your hands,

Oh Allah, only you know your army, ya Allah. We ask you, ya Allah, to grant special protection to the innocent brothers and sisters, ya Allah. Oh Allah, we ask you, ya Allah, to allow this fighting and this slaughter to end, ya Allah. Oh Allah, we ask you to allow our politicians in this country and the Muslim leaders across the globe to demand a ceasefire, ya Allah.

And allow, ya Allah, allow a sense of reason, ya Allah, allow the voice of reason, ya Allah, to become the loudest voice, ya Allah. Oh Allah, we ask you to allow all our politicians and the leaders, ya Allah, to have a grain of humanity within them, ya Allah. Oh Allah, we ask you to allow them to be able to see through this smoke screen, and allow them to see through what shaytan has placed over their eyes. Oh Allah, allow them to see the truth from the falsehood, ya Allah. Oh Allah, allow the true narrative to become apparent, ya Allah.

Call for Ummah's Awakening

Oh Allah, allow the sleeping ummah to wake up and to resort to coming to the masajid, ya Allah. Allow the sleeping ummah to leave, ya Allah, gatherings of sin, and leave sin of all sorts of watching haram, listening to haram, thinking about haram, having haram relationships, spending in haram. Oh Allah, purchasing of haram, oh Allah, oh Allah, backbiting, ya Allah, lying, cheating, deception of the greatest form, oh Allah, that the Muslim ummah is involved in.

We ask, ya Allah, allow this past month's events, ya Allah, to make the ummah, allow them to realize that this is not gonna work. Oh Allah, allow the ummah to collectively and individually, ya Allah, repent, ya Allah. Allow us to turn our backs towards our current lifestyle, and start a new life, ya Allah. Allow the youth, ya Allah, to get out of ghafla and heedlessness, ya Allah. Allow them, ya Allah, to become true, ya Allah, servants of yours. Allow them to become respectful to the parents. Allow them to become loving and caring for the deen. Allow the parents to become loving and caring towards the children. Allow husbands and wives to start caring and loving for one another, oh Allah, and fulfilling each other's rights.

Final Supplications

Oh Allah, we ask, ya Allah, to accept the duas of the brothers and sisters across the entire globe, of the harameen al-sharifeen, in masjid al-aqsa, and wherever people are crying by day and by night. We ask you to accept their duas on behalf of us, on behalf of the brothers and sisters all across Palestine, and all across the globe, wherever the innocent people are being, ya Allah, butchered.

We ask, ya Allah, those who have passed away, accept their martyrdom. Oh Allah, allow them to be swimming in the rivers of jannah. And allow their children and their loved ones to be able to see the visions of their elders, or their youngsters, and their children who have passed away, ya Allah. Allow them to have their faith, ya Allah, that definitely they are gone in a much better place. And oh Allah, those who the shuhada have left behind, grant them all patience, ya Allah, grant them sabr jameel, ya Allah.

Oh Allah, we ask you, ya Allah, to grant us all the khayr and good that the Prophet ﷺ would have asked you at this moment. And we seek refuge in you from all that Rasulullah ﷺ sought refuge in you from.
