As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. Bismillah walhamdulillah wassalatu wassalam ala Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. I want to begin by praying to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that he blesses all of us at the month of Ramadan in good health and allow us to worship in a way that we are to worship him subhanahu wa ta'ala. I also want to thank Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. I'm going to pray to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for blessing us with this beloved panel right here. You have no idea how blessed we are alhamdulillah. I pray to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to protect our shuyukh, to protect their families, protect their knowledge and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala let them continue to guide us spiritually as well as socially as well. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala protect you all shuyukh. These are the jewels of Epic. These are the reason, they are the people for where Epic is today. So I want to first on behalf of the community say a sincere jazakumullahu khairan to our shuyukh. Jazakumullahu khairan shuyukh.
As we know alhamdulillah. Let me just get the waters inshallah. I'm gonna request the board of directors to come here please to my right. Everybody just make your way quickly. This is not a photo op opportunity for these for us. This is more to put a face to the name and set the responsibility. Guys make your way quickly inshallah. So Yahya bhai, Amir bhai, Rashid, Basir just make your way quickly inshallah. Azad bhai.
Welcome Ramadan Program
So as we speak, as we are here, first off how was the program today, the welcome Ramadan so far? Alhamdulillah. Good. Love the child of the samosas. I'm sure the sisters loved it. I'm sure the children loved it. The youth we had both boys and girls. So this entire program of welcome Ramadan was organized by our sisters committee. So I want to take a moment to thank the sisters committee led by sister Afreen and her team for organizing this whole event. They worked really hard. They planned this down to minor detail. It is not easy for us to have a program for children's in the gymnasium, youth boys in the main hall, men's in the multi-purpose hall downstairs, youth multi-purpose hall downstairs, then youth girls in the multi-purpose hall upstairs. And there was a sister's programs upstairs in the main hall. Alhamdulillah. Very well done. So sisters, thank you so much. Jazakumullah khairan for your hard work and please continue to do so for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Jazakumullah khairan.
Board of Directors Introduction
Do I have all the board of directors here? Alhamdulillah. Brothers, first I'm gonna just say the name. So this is for you guys to know the face to the name inshallah and they're not here to look pretty. They're here to take responsibility. They're here to make a commitment and you will be the judge inshallah after Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala how we are doing and we're gonna take a direct feedback from you all. Starting from my right I have Rashid Azmi. Rashid bhai, raise your hand. Rashid bhai is gonna be our treasurer and then we have Abul Kalam Azad. If anybody's from India they know he's the first education minister of government of India and then we have Yahya Sheikh. Then we have Amir Manzoor bhai and then we have the best AV everything all-rounder Basir Syed inshallah, my partner in crime.
Ramadan Operations Guidelines
So all we want to do today is we know we're gonna make mistakes. We know we're not going to be perfect but one thing I will tell you we have planned, we have sat down and we have done the best we possibly can to plan the operations for the month of Ramadan so that way all of us will have peace, ease to come enjoy our ibadat here at EPIC, some food, some lectures, socializing and then go back home and come back in again. We have done our due diligence. We know for fact that we're gonna be making mistakes. So I'm gonna ask for your apology, I'll ask for your forgiveness right from the get-go. So forgive us for our shortcomings.
Then I have a request from you all. While we are planning we have made some assumptions and those assumptions are not very rigid. There are certain rules that we'd like for all of us to follow and that will help us help you better. So I'm going to quickly run through them.
Number one thing that we will not tolerate any drug abuse, substance abuse, physical fights, verbal abuse on the campus of EPIC. If we run into any of such situations it will be fallen under zero tolerance. We're gonna be trespassing, we're gonna let the police officers, law enforcement take over from there. No discussions, nothing whatsoever. And we are doing this to protect our youth, to protect us all. As you know that we have seen incidents with drugs, all kinds of stuff, so therefore we have to be very vigilant about this.
Number two, the operations, the parking. We request you all to come in a bit early. If you can carpool, alhamdulillah, but if you want to drive yourself so that you can have control when you go home, no problem. Please come in a bit early and then listen and follow the volunteers in the parking place. That will help you. Once the parking lot is full, we have parking at the Police Academy and then we have parking at the Plaza by Dari, the Haraz over there. Of course when we park at the Police Academy, as well as other public places, they are looking at us as Muslims. And like it or not, here's the fact. The Police Academy, after we park and we empty that parking lot, there's a lot of litter and they point us out. This is what you guys did, this is what you guys did. So we don't want to have that kind of impression. So my request is to please do not litter, empty that parking lot by midnight. Follow those rules closely, inshallah. Same thing on the other side, carpooling.
The other thing is, we're going to have at the CAF for brothers. It's 18 and plus, 18 plus only. And we have an upper cap of 100 slots. First come, first serve basis, inshallah. We will not be hosting at the CAF for sisters.
One thing that we want to say is, the carpeted area, we don't want to bring food and drinks on the carpet, in the carpeted area, please. We want to make sure that we eat in the multipurpose hall, somewhere outside, and clean after yourselves. That way we won't have any problems.
Last but not least, the access to the gymnasium is not going to be open until after 8 Rakat of Taraweeh. I know a lot of parents want the gym to be open during Isha until 8, while during 8. But we have made a decision that we want the gym to be closed because sometimes we need for overflow. Plus, we want our kids to be able to participate in the prayers, inshallah.
With that, I'm going to take us all to the main program and listen to our beloved Shuyukh, starting with Hafiz Sajjad, with his beautiful recitation, inshallah. And after that, if he has a few words, you can say a few words, inshallah. Jazakumullah khair.
Hafiz Sajjad's Recitation
Assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. I have a few words that inshallah, after this long announcement and all the updates, we will not have the first day of Ramadan. More announcements. Oh, I'm going to repeat it. Assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
Allah Almighty has spoken the truth. Now I am going to request Imam Nadeem to say a few words.
Imam Nadeem's Words
Alhamdulillah, we are back here again. Last year we were here, we had a similar program, though it was the night before Ramadan. Tomorrow is not Ramadan, tomorrow is not Taraweeh. You still have a few days before Taraweeh starts.
What Makes Ramadan Special?
What makes Ramadan, Ramadan? What is the most important element of Ramadan? Why is Ramadan so special? It is because of the Quran. It is the month in which the Quran was revealed. Allah could have chosen any other month, but He chose this one month. And when it comes to the Quran, and when it comes to fasting, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, He talked about the Quran first before He even mentioned Ramadan. Before He even mentioned fasting in the month of Ramadan. As Hafiz Sajjad beautifully just recited:
Allah mentions fasting afterwards, He mentioned the Quran before. And what is the most important thing when it comes to the Quran? Besides the fact that we need to understand the Quran and study the Quran, the most important thing is to read the Quran.
The Linguistic Meaning of Quran
You know what is beautiful about this ayah, As Shaykh Sha'arawi, a great scholar of Tafsir, he explains, in this ayah, this is the only ayah of the Quran where Allah mentions Ramadan, by the way. There is no other place in the Quran where Ramadan is mentioned. In this ayah, he says, The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed.
Now if you go throughout the entire Quran and you study the entire Quran, you will notice that Allah refers to the Quran in many different forms. Sometimes He will refer to it as Al-Kitab. Sometimes He will refer to it as Al-Dhikr. Sometimes He will refer to it as Al-Nur. He will refer to it in many different ways. Why did Allah use the word Quran in the context of Ramadan? Because the word Quran linguistically means a book that is read over and over again. Hint, this is a hint from Allah that try to understand what I am trying to say. Meaning Allah, what is He trying to say? The month of Ramadan is the month where the Quran is being recited. Not just once, over and over again.
The Focus of the Scholars
Now one of the things that today, I talked about this also in my khutbah, one of the trends that we see in our community is that Ramadan is shifting in terms of its essence. You see a long time ago in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, in the time of the Sahaba, the Tabi'un, the Tabatabi'un, there was always one focus. No matter, even though you were the greatest Shaykh of that time, whether you were Imam Hanifa, you were Imam Malik, you were Imam Shafi'i, you were Imam Ahmed Hanbal, they would put a halt, they would pause all of their duroos and their khatiras, so that they can focus on just reading the Quran.
Think about that for a moment. Great giants, intellectual giants would put aside all the books of fiqh, because the month of Ramadan is the month of the Quran. Now from that, we are slowly and gradually shifting. Shifting to what? Shifting to more lectures.
Welcome Ramadan 2026: The Centrality of the Qur'an
Shifting to what? More socializing in the month of Ramadan. And shifting towards other things that is besides qiyam and Qur'an. Brothers and sisters, we have to come back to the recitation of the Qur'an. Ask yourself, when Ramadan comes to an end, Ask yourself one simple question. How many khatiras, how many lectures, how many halaqas, how many duroos did you attend? And how many times did you finish the Qur'an? And you will find in many cases, people have attended dozens of khatiras and halaqas and duroos, And they probably just recited few surahs from the Qur'an. This is wallahi a disservice to the month of Ramadan. This is a disservice to the value of Ramadan.
So the very first thing that Ramadan is about is the Qur'an. And the most important aspect of the Qur'an is to read the Qur'an as many times as you can. Because at the end of the day, halaqas and duroos are the words of people. And the words of the Qur'an, the Qur'an itself is the word of Allah the Almighty. I ask you, which one is more preferable to you? The words of mankind or the words of the Creator Himself? So this is the very first thing.
Ramadan: A Month of Transformation
The second thing I want to quickly highlight is the month of Ramadan comes for us to change our life around. To make a difference in our life. If Ramadan goes by and we have not created a connection with the Qur'an, then we have lost the spirit of Ramadan. We have lost the objective of Ramadan.
You will find in the Qur'an, Allah refers to the Qur'an as an عبرة (ibrah). Because there are so many lessons in the Qur'an. Allah refers to the Qur'an as a هدى (hudan), as a source of guidance. Allah refers to the Qur'an as الفرقان (al-furqan), as the criterion. Meaning that how to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong at every single juncture of life. The Qur'an provides guidance on that. The Qur'an is a نور (nur), it means that it will provide you light when you are in the darkest moments of your life. The Qur'an is a شفاء (shifa), it's a spiritual shifa, and in many cases it's even a physical shifa.
There are so many things with the Qur'an, but the fact that, you know what's interesting? At the time of the Prophet ﷺ, you had even a kafir, like Abu Jahl, who would listen to the Qur'an and say, without a doubt, this is the right word, this is haq. But he did not accept Islam because of his tribal ego. But if a kafir can understand the value of the Qur'an, you and I are Muslims, we declare Allah as our Rabb and Rasul Muhammad ﷺ as our Rasul, yet we are not mesmerized by the Qur'an, we are not impacted by the Qur'an, that means there is something wrong with us.
The Qur'an: Our Path to Light
So that is why, brothers and sisters, I remember, I'll finish on this. If you go back into the 80s, the 70s and the 80s, the Muslim ummah was plunged into darkness. Just like before the Qur'an was revealed, humanity was plunged into darkness. The zulm that was taking place all over the world, wrong things that were taking place, wrong habits, lack of haya, you name it, everything was taking place in societies. Allah sent down the Qur'an to take mankind out of darkness and bring them to light.
If I want to come to light, then the only way, even today for this ummah, we are plunged in a state of darkness. Wherever you see, there is so much Islamophobia, there are so many things going on, and people are asking the same question, how do we recover? What do we do? The solution is in the Qur'an. When the ummah was in that state, today, Alhamdulillah, the ummah has recovered to a certain degree. Because of what? Because of the Qur'an.
I remember my teacher who came from Pakistan, back in 1988 when they came to Dallas, he told our parents one thing, if you don't teach your kids Qur'an, you have no Islamic future. Simple as that. Likewise, if we don't teach our kids Qur'an, they have no Islamic future. There is no spirituality going forward. If we don't have Qur'an, there will be no deen in our life.
Use Ramadan, connect with the Qur'an, may Allah grant us a Ramadan in a manner that we can be impacted by the Qur'an, and this impact, inshallah, will be long-lasting. Ameen. Jazakumullah khair.
Sheikh Yasir Qadhi: The Wisdom of Ayyaman Ma'dudat
Jazakumullah khair, Imam Sahib, for the beautiful reminder. As always, the emphasis of the Ramadan Qur'an. Jazakumullah khair, Imam Sahib, thank you so much. Now I'm going to request our Sheikh Yasir to share his advice with us about Ramadan, welcoming Ramadan, inshallah.
Bismillah, alhamdulillah, wa salatu wa salamu ala Rasulullah, wa ala alihi wa sahbihi, wa min allama ba'd. Hafiz Sahib recited Surah Al-Baqarah's verses about the month of Ramadan, and there is a phrase in there that only occurs in the whole Qur'an in this particular section.
Allah says, O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you can achieve piety. Then Allah says, two words, أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ (ayyaman ma'dudat). This is the only time in the whole Qur'an that Allah has this phrase, ayyaman ma'dudat. Days that are limited and numbered. Why did Allah, right after saying the month of Ramadan, fasting, why did Allah have these two words? Days that are limited and numbered, ayyaman ma'dudat.
The Arabic Linguistic Beauty
By the way, a little bit of Arabic here. The word ayyam is plural, and you can describe it in both ways, ayyaman ma'dudah and ayyaman ma'dudat. Both are allowed for reasons that the Arabic linguists know. If you had said ma'dudah, if the Qur'an had said ma'dudah, it would have had a different meaning than ma'dudat. Ma'dudat, which is used in the Qur'an, actually indicates the days are numbered and counted. And ma'dudah means few days. So ma'dudat is actually a stronger indication of how few the days are. The Arabic language would allow to say ayyaman ma'dudah, limited days. But Allah says, ayyaman ma'dudat, count them, you can count them. So the word ma'dudat is actually effectively indicating that the days are very limited and numbered.
Three Reasons for This Divine Phrase
Why did Allah, after praising Ramadan, praising Siyam, telling us to fast, why is Allah saying ayyaman ma'dudat? Number of points.
First and foremost, as a mercy. Because if Allah had willed, fasting would have been obligatory every single day. So Allah is indicating that this religion has not been made difficult. Allah wants to make things easy for you. Allah is not making things difficult. And our Prophet ﷺ said, This deen is ease. So the first reason why Allah is saying, we're gonna fast the whole month, and don't worry, it's a limited number of days. 29 or 30 days. It's not the whole year, you can count them. So yes, it might be a little bit difficult, but don't worry. The end as you can see it close by. So the first reason why Allah mentions ayyaman ma'dudat is to indicate Allah's rahma and the ease upon all of you, and that this religion has not placed a burden.
And that's why, right after this, Allah says, so if you are sick or traveling, then don't even worry about it. To indicate the ease. Allah is not wanting to make the fast something that makes your life impossible. So yes, there will be a nuisance. But if it becomes more than a nuisance, if it becomes something that's harming your health, something that you cannot do, then Allah is saying, don't worry about it. So this is the first reason. Allah's mercy.
The second reason is encouragement. Incitement. Excitement. How so? You know when you go to the store, and it says sale, almost always it says, limited time only. They want you to be excited. You better purchase it right now. The sale's not gonna last forever. And in the materialistic world we live in, we have seasons for sales. The Black Friday, and this day, and that day. Limited. And everybody's waiting. You are saving money for that sale day. Because you know, limited time.
So the second reason is to incentivize. Allah is saying, you need to take advantage of this. It's a limited days. And SubhanAllah, you know every year the same thing happens, isn't it? That when Ramadan is about to start, you're like, how am I gonna last 30 days? Before you know it, one third is gone. Before you know it, the last 10 have begun. Before you know it, all over. And then it becomes a memory. We all know this. We've lived through it. How many times, some of us in this room, 60, 70 Ramadans, mashaAllah. And every year the same routine. How are we gonna do it? Oh, one third already gone. Oh, last 10 days. And then it's gone.
Take advantage of it. So when you're feeling down, remember, ayyaman ma'dudat. Use this to incentivize you. I need to read that extra page. I need to stand up two more rakat. Because after a few days, I will not have this opportunity. I need to give that charity. So remember, ayyaman ma'dudat.
The third that our scholars mention over here, is that it is also a metaphor for your life in totality. Not just Ramadan, but your entire life. Your life is composed of a finite number of days. You will not be able to increase or decrease. And as quickly as Ramadan goes, so too in the twinkling of an eye, decades will go by. Your life will go by. So Allah Azza wa Jal is indicating the fleetingness of time. How quickly time goes. And how limited time is. And Allah is comparing the swiftness of Ramadan with the swiftness of our lives.
And this too is a reality. There are people here that can remember Ramadan in the 50s, 60s, 70s. My memories begin in the 80s of Ramadan. I vividly remember the Ramadan of 1980 in Houston, Texas as a 5 year old child. You know how I remember this? Because back then we didn't have cell phones. Back then the clocks were not accurate. So every day my mom would say to me, there used to be a number. I forgot what the number is. But there was a number, and if you call the tone it's going to be 7 hours, 23 minutes and 10 seconds. Does anyone remember that? Remember that? Back in the day, right?
So my job that my mom tasked me to do is to go and make that phone call. And as soon as 7 hours, 29 minutes, Ah! Time for iftar! I would run back home and get the samosas and whatnot. So I remember 1980 to this day, literally all of those years and decades have gone.
So I ask Allah to allow us to take advantage of Ayyaman Ma'dudat and to maximize our legacy in these finite, limited, counted number of days. Jazakumullah Khairan.
The Dua of the Fasting Person
Jazakumullah Khair, Sheikh Yasir. Very insightful. Very, very, very insightful. Always have something new to learn. Alhamdulillah. Jazakumullah Khair. Last but not least, take it to the finish line, Sheikh.
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh. Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasoolillah
My Habibi Sheikh Sajjad when he recited that page, the last ayah he recited:
We all know male, female, young, old, senior, junior, they all memorize this ayah and they know this ayah. Right in the middle, Ibn Ashur, one of the greatest scholars of tafsir in his book, he said, this ayah, where Allah said when my ibad ask you about me, I am near, I answer the dua of the person when he calls upon me, so let them respond to me and believe in me so that they can be guided. He said, this indicates and confirms the hadith of Rasulullah that the sa'im, the fasting person, his dua is mustajab because it came right sandwiched between the ayat of siyam. Let's take this ayah quickly word by word.
The Nearness of Allah in Du'a
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala used the word عبادي (ibadi), not عباد (ibad). There is a huge difference. عبادي (Ibadi) means abundance, means a lot. That's why it was used in Surah Az-Zumar:
"Oh my عبادي that have transgressed among themselves" - because the ones who transgressed among themselves are abundant, are a lot. But عباد (ibad) is few:
But when it came to عباد, "Give the glad tidings to عباد" - who are these عباد? The ones who when they listen to something they follow the best of it. These are the ones who are guided and these are the ones of intellect. May Allah make us among them.
The عباد (ibad) of the Rahman - very, very few. Here Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي - abundant, there is a lot of my عبادي that will ask me.
The Unique Nature of This Ayah
All over the Quran, all over the Quran, when Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is telling Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam:
Every time Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is telling Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: "When they ask you about this, say... When they ask you about that, say..." Except in this place! Even, by the way, these are matters of dunya. Even when they ask you about the matters of akhira, Allah used the word "say":
What happens to the mountains - even this is something from the ghayb, He still spoke in the tongue of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Except in this position! Allah said: "When they ask you about Me," He did not say قُلْ فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ - "I am near." There is nothing between the abd when he makes du'a and Allah - not even you, ya Rasulullah!
The Context of Revelation
This ayah was revealed because the sahaba came to Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: "Ya Rasulullah, is Allah very far so we can yell and scream, or is He near so we can whisper?" So Allah revealed this ayah.
When they ask you about Me, I, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, did not say "I listen to the person when he makes du'a" or "I hear his du'a" - He said أُجِيبُ - "I answer his du'a."
And Allah said: "Make du'a" - He did not say "I hear you" - "I answer you." So this is to confirm, ya ikhwan, that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam told us that the du'a is 100% answered - 100%! One of three ways: either Allah will give you what you ask for, or something evil was about to take place and it will be diverted, it will be taken away from your way, or it will be saved till the Day of Judgment - which is the best, because any khair in the akhira is better than the whole dunya and everything in it.
Linguistic Miracle in the Ayah
And listen to this linguistically: Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ. In Arabic, in grammar, the answer comes after the statement. Like for example, you do not say "I am full if I eat" - no, you say "If I eat, I am full." Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, He said أُجِيبُ before He said what are we going to do! So the du'a is already mustajab - your du'a is already answered! أُجِيبُ before He told us أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ.
And another thing also, subhanAllah, when you ponder upon the Quran - Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, look at the miracle of the Quran - He did not say إِن دَعَانِ, He said إِذَا دَعَانِ. What's the difference between إِذَا and إِن? إِذَا - it's going to happen. إِن - there is a possibility it's not going to happen, or there is even a possibility with إِن it will be impossible to happen:
"Say, if Allah has a walad" - which is impossible to happen. So إِن is impossible to happen sometimes. Here Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said إِذَا - it's going to happen!
And we all know the ayat:
إِذَا - it's going to happen! So Allah used the word, the letter إِذَا:
Our Responsibility in Du'a
What's our job to do? You want your du'a accepted? Obey me and believe in me. Obey me and believe that I can answer your du'a. And this is where our biggest problem is: when we are making the du'a, we make the du'a as if we are asking each other. We think, "You know what, how can my cancer be cured? How can my debt be covered? How can my son be guided? How can this and this and that..." We forgot who are we asking!
We are asking the One who said هُوَ عَلَيَّ هَيِّنٌ - "It's easy for Me." We are asking the One who said فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ, عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.
And this is subhanAllah, this is the whole goal of the du'a - لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ - "So they can be guided." And this is our whole purpose, just like what's the target, what's the goal - لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ - here, "So they can be guided."
Preparing for the Blessed Month
So ya ikhwan, these are the nights that are coming up - may Allah keep us alive to witness this month. These are the nights of du'a! These are the nights of du'a! Save all your du'a, pick all the people you want to make du'a for, plead, beg, cry, shed the tears, say it like you mean it!
اُدْعُوا وَأَنتُم مُوقِنُونَ بِالْإِجَابَةِ - "Make du'a and you have certainty that it will definitely be answered."
Make du'a! Start with yourself, then go to your parents, then to your family, then to your community, then to the ummah at large. Always start with yourself, just like the anbiya:
Start with yourself and then your parents and then the rest of the people that you know.
Please keep our brothers and sisters that are suffering all over the world in your du'a, because تِلْكَ الْأَيَّامُ نُداوِلُها بَيْنَ النَّاسِ - "These days are a cycle." Now we are in this luxury, we have no clue when we are in the same boat like them. May Allah subhana wa ta'ala...
A really sincere ameen for this du'a, inshallah. May Allah subhana wa ta'ala protect our shuyukh, may Allah subhana wa ta'ala protect their families, elevate their statuses in both of these worlds. Because of these shuyukh, Allah subhana wa ta'ala blessed us with, we have learned a lot, inshallah ta'ala.
With this, we hope that our Ramadan is going to be blessed, peaceful, inshallah.
